may i ask, when doing drone hyperlapse wide shot slide from right to left, when stabilized, the foreground hill will wobble up and down? beside, maybe you can speak a little slower, not everyone can understand english very good, thanks your sharing.

@@ScottHerder honestly I wish I knew of this method earlier on other videos I've shot because I think I threw out a lot of hyperlapses that could have been usable as I was solely relying on warp stabaliser. I'll have a think of other stuff that could be useful to know and let you know mate. Thanks again

I just watched a bunch of your videos and subscribed. It's dope !! but on this one, I didn't get anything of the 3rd technique. lol. Maybe it was a bit fast for me (im not a native English speaker) or what, but I didn't really get the point. When your tracking point is hidden, you go back one frame before, choose another point to track, but then you put back the tracker on the initial spot without moving any frame forward ?? how does the fact of moving the attach point (lower in this example) and then putting back (higher) help the tracking ?
Thanks for the feedback I will try my best to explain but yes that is pretty much it.
The outer square is the feature region and it is looking for specific features in the frame. This box tells the computer where to look BUT doesn't do any stabilizing. By default settings, the tracking tool also generates an attach point in the middle of the square.
Our attach point is the crosshair, or the plus sign. The attach point is going to tell the computer I WANT THIS to stay perfectly still and it doesn't have to be inside of the box.
Many times something blocks our view of the attach point. So our goal is to figure out how to trick the computer into selecting it correctly for us.
To do that I have found it's easiest to just go back a couple frames. Find something closeish to whatever we used for the feature region (outer box) and select that. Then moving my attach point back to its original location.

- you go back one or a couple frames
- you move the feature box somewhere close to its original location (within the same plan or region) and the attach point automatically moves with it when moving the feature box.
- without moving the playhead, you move back the attach point to its original location without touching the feature box
- you relaunch the tracking
does that mean that after that you can let the feature box where you moved it or do you have to put it back at some time too ?

Great question. I hope this helps.
There’s a lot of moving parts so sometimes text is hard to explain but you can move the reference box any where you want and it won’t affect the tracking
The inner + sign is most important. If you move that then yes. It will jump.
So I’m suggesting in situations where it gets blocked. The frame before it gets blocked. Move the reference point somewhere else. And manually put the + sign in the correct spot.
Then as long as the reference spot is in the correct place. You’ll always be good!

Depending on how many more photos you need to track. I’ve found it drifts after awhile. So once whatever has gotten out of the way. I’ll put everything back to how it was. Meaning I relocate the reference area back around the tracker.

Scott, can you do a short video explaining a hyperlapse vs a timelapes? Im new to all this and I think they are the same thing?
If I can get around to it. But the answer is a time-lapse the camera doesn't move, or is fixed to a slider that moves like a few inches to a few feet. A hyper-lapse refers to when the camera moves much farther than a few feet. But I am not sure how the term got to "Hyper."

Great video! A quick question. What would you recommend for GoPro Hero 10? Shooting the timelapse in Photo format and then edit the raw footage or using their TimeWarp/TimeLapse Video mode and then do the post editing?
Hey thanks Pranav, Good question.
I have never used the Timewarp/Timelapse feature on a gopro so I'm not sure I can make a good recommendation.
If that comes out good, then I'd do that because it's probably a bit easier AND you can always use the same techniques in this video to smooth it even more.
Always great tutorial, thanks Scott.. Are you working on full quality files? Direct from raw files? Wich pc are you using? Could be interesting a video where you explain wich pc is good for hyperlapse and why, also curios to know your workflow and how you import photos and make videos
I process them through LRTimelapse and Lightroom. So I just work on the ProRes file LRTimelapse creates. ProRes is a much nicer codec to edit on for Macs. I think DNX is the windows equivalent. My desktop computer is last years iMac and my travel computer is the 15-inch MacBook pro with 16gb of RAM and 7 cores at 2.9ghz. I think that would be the minimum specs I'd recommend since these are sometimes 8k files. Premiere and AE (the two software I use to edit most) are most efficient at around 12 cores atm if I remember correctly.
Great video. One stupid question. How do you shoot the hyperlapse? Do you use the timelapse function of the camera and then walk towards the object trying to keep it in frame? Or do you simply shoot a video?
Hey Phillip, not a stupid quesiton at all. I prefer to just shoot when I am ready. I've found if I use the interval function, too often a car, or a person, will get in the way and I'll have to wait. I try to be as consistent as possible, but I don't stress too much about the gaps in between each photo! Cheers and happy shooting!

How do i stabilize it if I don´t have any reference point that stays at the same spot because my drone is moving sideways?
Hey Marton, I'd have to see the example you're talking about. You might have a few different reference points that you have to use.

My problem is stabilizing a long sequence with one big trucking camera movement where nothing in the first frame is visible in the last.
It should stabilize so easily.. the background is brick. I’ve done this several times before but for some reason I just can’t figure it out this time

It might be something where you do it for as long as you can, IE first half of the video. Once that tracking point moves out or gets close you pre comp it and begin a new tracking point from there.
So everything in tracking is manual .. LOL .. why we use a software ? if after effects doesn't help us then what is the use of it in hyperlapse

Man i have a real clear shot, with nice spot like windows and stuff and it doesnt want to track even frame by frame, its going non sense
Shoot me a screen recording or screenshot of the problem. It might be a simple fix. Also click on the layer your having an issue with and press u to reveal any of its properties and take a screenshot of that too. Sometimes we might run an effect or be in a different setting where we’re just not seeing the correct thing and it’s a real easy fix. You can send it to me as a comment or dm me on ig @itsscottherder
