Side pockets are for my umbrella and water bottle, here in Sweden almost everyone and across ALL ages groups have one of these, some are 20 years old and still going strong.
I put an umbrella on one side and a water bottle in the other. It's thin however I recently watched a RUclips video of a lady who managed to fit a 650ml water bottle inside. We just need to shop around for a thinner bottle.

I use a waterbottle in mine too. Umbrellas aren't too handy up here except in August, but that's good to know they fit in those pockets
