Lyrics! Come guess me this riddle, what beats pipes and fiddle What's hotter than mustard and milder than cream What best wets your whistle, what's clearer than crystal What's sweeter than honey and stronger than steam What'll make the lame walk, what will make the dumb talk, The elixir of life and philospher's stone And what helped Mr. Brunnell to build the Thames Tunnel Wasn't it poteen from ould Inisowen So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys And oh lord, it's no wonder, if lightning and thunder Weren't made from the plunder of poteen me boys. You maidens pathetic, with lovers athletic For liquid cosmetic, you can't beat the drop With a glow to your cheek, it will make your heart leap It'll quiet a stallion and cure an old cob At the mouth you would drool, be reduced to a fool You'd kick up your heels and you'd peel to the buff Then 'tis he'd be pathetic while you'd be athletic If only you'd take a few drops of the stuff So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys For there's nothing like whiskey to make maidens frisky It soon separates all the men from the boys.
I can almost imagine myself sitting in Sean's Bar again while listening to fiddlers and singers and drinking a pint of Bulmers (Sláinte!). Now I miss Ireland even more.
I'm glad you've found a way to sooth the little one, but I can't help finding this comment amusing since it's on a song about the wonders of whiskey. I guess it makes sense though, since whiskey rubbed on the gums of a teething baby was a thing for many a year. Not so much these days, but still an interesting bit of history none the less. Hope you and the little one are well, Ma'am :).
So my father was a folk music buff; he died when I was very young, but not before he instilled me with a love for the stuff. This one was my favorite, but I could never remember the name, and so was never able to find it. Until now. Thanks so much, Colm, for bringing the past back, and for your lovely music. :) I'll look forward to your next video per the usual; blessings on you!
As a non-native English speaker I had some trouble making out the fast-paced words with an accent, so here's lyrics for other people like me: Come guess me this riddle, what beats pipes and fiddle What's hotter than mustard and milder than cream What best wets your whistle, what's clearer than crystal What's sweeter than honey and stronger than steam What'll make the lame walk, what will make the dumb talk, The elixir of life and philospher's stone And what helped Mr. Brunnell to build the Thames Tunnel Wasn't it poteen from ould Inisowen So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys Oh lord, it's no wonder, if lightning and thunder Weren't made from the plunder of poteen me boys. (the actual song is longer, but that's the part in the video)
That's impressive, I half expected you to faint from the oxygen deprivation in the end: it's like not a single intake of breath interrupts an 80 seconds of singing! And that goes for the background hum too! Amazing, and thank you for introducing me to this song
I am forever amazed by your talent and ability. Your ability to breathe without breaks is beyond anything I could ever do - let alone hit those notes. Well done again mate, I hope you’re proud of yourself because you really are amazing :)
Fantastic! I love that we get to hear Irish folk songs from you since they will naturally 'suit' your accent quite well and allow us who aren't familiar with them like we are sea shanties to enjoy the culture you're sharing. Thank you so much Colm! That tempo and enunciation was challenging and you rocked it!
This makes me feel weirdly nostalgic even though I'm from Spain and I've never been to Ireland. The power of music is incredible. Excellent cover, Colm!
God bless your soul .... not heard this for over 20 yrs Willy mcbride would definitely send a chill down my spine n loads of tears in my eyes .... xxxxx
I would love to see this on Spotify! I have a Bards playlist for my D&D games and would love to introduce a Nice Violin Bard singing this song in a tap house!
Gosh, I am so infatuated with not only your voice, but your overall talent. I can help myself but binge all of your videos! Thank you for sharing your raw talent with all of us here on RUclips.
What a feat. This song is tricky enough, and to maintain a tempo like that is so impressive without accompaniment. While I happen to agree with many here that the full song would be amazing to hear coming from you, I know how much more work something like that would be. Love this song, and loved to hear you sing it.
These premiers get me everytime. I love your stuff and I hope that you are doing well. You will always be so much more than someone who makes fantastic music. And even if most of us don't actually get to see that, we can see the care and love you put into creating and sharing your work, and that gives us a glimpse of the good man you are off screen(and audio) as well.
Wow, what a rhythm and energy! And you sound more and more effortless every time, I am beyond impressed. And completely enamoured with this new song as well. Thank you!

Only a 1:21 and I’m going on 3 hours today. Am I embarrassed of course. Do I regret it, not for a second. The trick is to put it in its own playlist and then just put it on repeat. Beautiful!
Okay, so everyday, I wake up with a song in my head, if it's gonna be a good day, it something upbeat. Today it was this. But. . . Usually after about an hour it goes away, this stayed and I loved it.
Dude you rock. I can't wait to see you go to the top and when the world talks about you I can have the privilege of saying I've heard your work since the beginning.
Some elite Olympic Athlete level breathing there! 80 seconds and there MAY have been 3 breaths. Must be Colm's superpower! *NEW RULE: Pass the bong to Colm LAST!*
My mother used to say, "Whiskey gets rid of colds, because you never saw a cowboy with a cold..." The song gets it...my mother wasn't Irish but my adopted grandfather was...
Completely exceeded my expectations! 🌋🌋🌋 Bravo! Well worth the wait!🥰🥰🥰 You can breath now! 🌬🌬🌬 Such a honor to listen to you sing! Thank you for sharing your talents! 🍻🍻🍻
This is easily one of the best covers of The Humors of Whiskey I've ever seen, and because of that I really wish it was the full song and not just two verses.
I have already listened it for about 10 times, or more. My new favourite morning song for sure! Lately I've been listening to you in the mornings to make my day.
What best whets your whistle, what's clearer than crystal, what's sweeter than honey, and stronger than steam? If I didn't know any better I'd say Colm was singing bout himself. :) Wonderfully done, once again.
I don't understand everything... The Irish parts but it sounded beautiful. If you would do more Irish folk covers that would be awesome. Your previous one (I don't quite remember the name) is one of my favourites
Oh my god! A band named Kilbrannan used to play a cover of this folk song in the Buffalo area of NY! They'd play at our St Pats day cookouts. So cool hearing this again, love it! Love the channel!
Ehm... How... How does breathing work with this???? I am genuinely confused and absolutely amazed. Do you composite your fragments in mixing or do you actually have a trick you use for retaining breath?
Petition for a full version of this song with all six verses cause that was amazing!
Edit: we did it y'all! ruclips.net/video/7O5mAmGKcjU/видео.html
I am still waiting for the full version of Hoist the colours
I second that measure do l here a third
Agreed
@@randomstf3935 agreed as well
Hear hear
More Irish songs please !! Really Nice !!
I second this notion! More Songs in Gaelic, too!
I feel like there's a remix should drop with a sick fiddle and harp solo.
Hundred million views strong to anyone who does that.
Right? I've been poking around for this song and most everyone sings it a cappella.
Oh shit- that would fucking slap
Ohh snap I needs it
I'm pretty sure you mean 'bagpipe.'
Because I do.
(grabs my pipes and starts working on it)

With that one block of “wall” they have left 😂
You are the only person who can get my one year old asleep here lately. This single Mother thanks you sir. 😅💕
So much respect to you!

That's impressive, I half expected you to faint from the oxygen deprivation in the end: it's like not a single intake of breath interrupts an 80 seconds of singing! And that goes for the background hum too!
Amazing, and thank you for introducing me to this song
Now you've got me wondering that too! I can't tell if it's clever editing, or just a case of incredibly impressive breath control...
@@phillipsouthard5882 it is possible if you constantly practice your breathing exercises everyday for years and years and have great posture.
Yeah, I can't find where he takes a breath anywhere.
I think this is lip syncing to a recording, hence the smooth humming and the lack of breaths on all parts.
Right?? Fantastic!
Ooo 2 in a week! I feel spoiled by your industriousness 😄
My only complaint is that it isn't longer. That's why I listen to it on loop
This is only a minute and a half long.
That's it. That's my only complaint. This made my day. :) Thanks.

The only song about alcoholicshism that I genuinely like.
