Hah. I just finished this game this morning for the first time. I’m on,y a very casual gamer these days and not much a fan of first person shooters, but this one had me engaged from beginning to end and I binged it like no game I’ve binged since I was a kid. Wonderful sense of humor, solid plot, intuitive game mechanics, great mission variety. Loved it through and through, and I even thought the graphics were solid, despite it being a nearly twenty year old game. Time to dig up the sequel.
This was a really great video about the best game series ever released on PC. I just need to correct you on one small thing. The body remover is in NOLF2 as well.
Kim, I love you. This is literally my most favorite game of all time and highly underrated. I literally want to be buried with this game. You just made my day!
It was not underrated... it was somewhat overshadowed by Perfect Dark that came out in the same year and was immediately more popular... The two games were extremely similar and the media was only going to talk about one of them.
Loved this game, great characters and setting but most of all it was the kind of fantastic, larger than life fun that you don't get much of in gaming these days, especially FPS games. And I loved NOLF's control scheme that was basically left mouse button to shoot, right mouse button for everything else, I wish game designers would take another look at that.
No need, I was recently replaying Monoloth's masterpeace TRON 2.0 on Win7 with latest unofficial patch, and came back to replaying my fav No One lives Forever 2 (also HD widescreen patched), having a blast
I love this series. Played both games several times back in the day and I still have here the originals. It's really sad that there still isn't a remake or sequel...
My GF loves the first game. I've always wanted to give it a shot since I'm a huge Bond fan. Also, those faces on NOLF2 have aged surprisingly well. I think many PS2-era faces have aged quite badly. Thanks for the upload Kim.
NOLF is one of many examples the industry should look to. A well made, tight FPS, even if it is not particularly innovative, combined with clever writing and appealing characters can become a beloved classic. There's nothing wrong with formula, if you do formula well.
Thanks Kim, I own still and played through these when they released, and reminded me of what I loved back in the day. I dont think I ever seen another NOLF nostalgia history vid, great insight into what we never would have known back then, good info! -Sneaking and stealth had its rewards in the funny @#$% you would hear, not achievement points :)
i did so digging and found out the reason Activision has a hand in No One Lives Forever mess is because they own Sierra entertainment (after merging with Sierra parent company) who helped make nolf games.
Why this hasn't been remade for todays market is beyond me, it's a sure winner. Classic game I loved on pc and thanks Kim I feel so old now I did not realise how fast those years have gone by.
Great review! Came back to replaying my favourite No One Lives Forever 2, after finishing another Monoloth's masterpeace TRON 2.0, having a blast! Absolutely love the amazing game design, characters and humor! Must play!
used to loved these games back in the day. I did always wonder why they just disppeared. That was such a great in-site to the series. Thank you really enjoyed that! :)
Awesome, just played through both NOLF games and Both Star trek Elite Force games for the first time in over a decade only a few months ago, they have aged a lot but still as great as i remembered them.
I vaguely remember playing this on the ps2, im fairly sure i liked it but this video has really made me want to play it again. Very informative and interesting as many of your documentary and review videos are.
I haven't even started this yet, but I am am so excited! I loved this series and miss playing it. I use to keep an eye out for a re-release that could run on my modern system. LOVE YOU KIM--- OK. gonna watch this now!
So sad that my mum threw out the big box for this when i was a kid, said it took up too much space...thank god i still kept the disc with the original sound track cd. Still play this game at least twice a year, it never gets boring.
I played these games thousands of hours as a kid, literally replaying over and over to pin the the ninja women to the walls in the second one haha. I’m estimating around 1500 ~ hours. Might have something to do with very few games that I actually owned. The second one was actually so precious to me I hid it under the bed. Never felt the same feelings for any other series but then again I was a passionate kid back then.
Nitpicking I know, but you incorrectly state that the Body remover Spray is gone in NOLF2. It can be found in the Siberian chapters and used there. You just don't get it very often as you don't get to choose your gear before each mission like the first game.
Never tried that version. Come to think of it, I should take a look also at Quake 3 and Half Life for the ps2. Quake 3 especially looks hideous... Half Life is probably decent.
I loved those games. Played both of them in the early 2000s and would give anything to go through them again. I still have the physical copies I bought back then, but last time I tried I couldn't get them to work on my modern PC.
I started playing the first No One Lives Forever on Playstation 2. Cool game (and the Playstation 2 version has about 3 exclusive levels only on PS2). I definitely want to play the PC version of the first game since the graphics appear nicer (more vibrant colors and the resolution looks sharper) and then play the sequel on PC (which is sadly not on Playstation 2. I THINK they had plans to release the sequel on PS2, but the company got acquired before they could).
My personal rule is that if I can't get hold of a game outside of buying a second hand copy off ebay or otherwise then emulation is completely justified! If you're not gonna provide me with an official way to get hold of a game then any notion of illegality and copyright can quite frankly get to fuck!
Seems like they should split the rights 40-40-20 (Activision-WB-Fox), no one has to look in their records for contracts, and everyone gets paid. Even if they don't agree with the split, the very fact that the offer was made might compel one or more of the parties to look through their records for a deal, if they look and find nothing then of course they'll be amenable to the offer since they're getting at least some ownership of the idea instead of zero, and if they find something then problem solved, it's theirs. Alternately you could just call their bluff, it's not particularly likely that they'll search the entirety of their poorly kept records for something that probably does not exist. As yet another alternative you could make a legal exception where all three sign a deal agreeing to a 40-40-20 split only for this single re-release, agreeing that it implies no ownership or lack thereof by any party involved, which can be terminated by any one of these parties at any time thus immediately terminating its circulation and restoring the status quo of the IP being of no use to anyone once again. FOX's idea made some sense since once again it might compel the other potential rights holders to search for their own deals if FOX uncovers one, the problem of course being that they weren't actually planning to look through their records, they were just going to keep the money, so figure out some added term of the deal like perhaps a time limit on the money being returned.
The problem is getting all of these companies (Activision, Warner Bros, and Fox, which is now owned by Disney) to agree to that 40 - 40 -20 split. Disney isn't going to want just 20%, so they will demand more, especially if it means being spiteful towards Warner (which is their main rival). Would be funny if a random company who just doesn't give a damn (like some company operating in the dark web to conceal the true identities of the people behind that company) decides to just remake / remaster the two N.O.L.F games and just releases them anyway on modern PCs and modern consoles. Activision, Warner, and Disney will probably stand up and start screaming and start claiming full ownership if the remasters / remakes make enough money, but none of them can claim full ownership since none of them have that when it comes to No One Lives Forver. LMAO.
SHOGO and Blood 2 were meant to be more than what they became. I personally enjoy both games (SHOGO more than B2), but it is sad knowing that games could've felt more complete if they had more time to finish. NOLF is an enormous leap from SHOGO and B2: it expands upon Half-Life's interactivity, it expands on Thief's and Deus Ex's stealth gameplay, its writing and characters are unbelievably excellent, it pays homage to and expands upon the spy genre, it's hilarious and it's very serious., and its graphics are vastly improved from its LithTech predecessors. Plus, it features some homages to Blood, such as the three different lipstick bombs. I like to think that if SHOGO and B2 had more time, they might've had NOLF's quality. The only parts I don't like about NOLF are the cameras, levels starting off when enemies are already alert to your presence, not being able to hold more than a few items, some levels going on too long, some levels not designed well for stealth, and its hard to get flawless stats with NOLF's design. NOLF 2 certainly improved a lot on NOLF 1, though it took some steps back. The whole thing involving the three companies who have a stake in NOLF is strange. It's like they want to appear that they know what they're doing, yet they have no interest in NOLF other then keeping the IP.
No mention of the excellent Tron 2.0 on your post-NOLF list? Such a shame, especially considering how the opening credits look similar to those in NOLF 2, just with a futuristic approach.
I'm very proud to own both of these, somehow I got genuine copies (PC) on ebay. I didn't know it was considered so rare. I actually tracked the original down because it supports the iFeel (immersion / logitech) force feedback mouse that I managed to find on ebay in 2016.
great to see this series getting attention. Absolute joy to play this game, dialogue alone is worth it. Always hoped that nolf 1 and 2 would of at least gotten an xbox port as that would of made replaying them a bit easier nowadays. I mean they made the ps2 version so why not a mult plat. Also, i believe Kemco's chicago enforcer on the xbox also run's using the nolf 2 engine. Frustrating how the IP is stuck behind a legal wall
One of the best PC proper game. This and the 2nd installment are excellent game ever made. NOFL franchise, Perfect Dark, and Perfect Dark Zero are classic spy game with female protagonist
This is funny, I just recently bought a used copy of No One Lives Forever 2 and then this video comes up. I always wondered why these series disappeared.
Excellent games, but a word of warning for people who would like to try the 'unofficial' remastered versions: while NOLF seems to work flawlessly, the sequel seems to have some comaptibility issues with modern hardware: you will probably need to disable the music, as it causes massive frame drops when enemies go into an alert state. A later vehicle-based boss fight also appears to be broken, so be ready to skip a level. There are also minor problems with game logic, which you can see on the first level (the assassin enemies seem to perform strange slomo jumps). But even with these issues NOLF2 is still very much worth playing!
just need to limit the frames NOLF 2 was never designed to be able to support framerates higher than 60 fps. use program to limit the FPS and the game will run nicely for you.
get the NOLFrevival copies, for widescreen and bug fixes,, after that use a program, that can limit frames i couldn't get my nvidia drivers to do it. i used DXtory. use it on both NOFL 1 and NOFL 2.. however its only NOFL 2 that really goes haywire. If you don't limit frames... then it has following issues Mouse feeling wonky, Music looping strangely and not sounding weird, boss battles and dialog gets wonky, animations and NPC act very strangely. As for fixing your mouse make sure you turn down your Mouse CPI. it needs to be less than 600 this is only a issue in NOLF 2.
Can't get this on steam, gog or epic, but you can download it from many sites. No reason why we couldn't get a 60s shooter with female agent in a spy world.
What a shame. I really missed out not getting these games to begin with. They came out in a weird bad time of my PC gaming phase and I had focused more on consoles. I Think I do have a legit copy of 1 sitting around here though however. Probably a 100 different stories of great or potentially great game series that just got tied up in bad legal BS. Take Hellgate: London as another example.
Kim, saying about rights to games I really wish someone would get the rights to 'Exhumed' (Powerslave in the US ) I really wish it could be remastered. I still own the 3 versions on Saturn, Pc and PlayStation and all 3 are different and I love that.
I played at least one of them. But I can't remember much about it. Remember something about a snow scooter and stealthy gimick weapons. NOLF 2 maybe? It didn't make much of an impression on me.
Few days ago I have replayed NOF 1-2 after 20 years and these games arnt as good as I remembered it. Playing using stealth is frustrating because AI isnt working as it should. Shooting however was still fun.
I have a sealed copy of the first game. I've had it for over a year but I only found out recently it's a proper classic. It looked kind of like a budget game to me. I picked up the sequel too, both in charity shops. Saying that, now I can't find the original which is just bloody typical. I can see the second one though. I'm in two minds about ripping open the first one when I find it, I probably will though as old PC games that aren't in big boxes seem to be worthlass. I have sealed copies of both Virta Fighter and Sonic 3D Blast that, if they were on any other system, would be worth maybe £40 each but on PC? I bought them recently on eBay for about £1.50 each. Amazing.
I noticed it the first time and wondered if I'd misheard, then a second time and started getting confused...then by the third I was questioning if I even knew the right word
i had the first game on ps2 and liked it. not sure what is different but it was good. i hever had problem with stealth. stealth worked good on ps2 version at least.
Somehow I've never gotten around to playing either of these games, I mean if you don't count a five-minute testing.. Think I'll remedy this tonight! The vid sure as hell made me want tae.
I'm not saying that fear is a bad game, it's just a bit bland. At least from my point of view. But I clearly see that for some might be a very good horror action fps. And also, commercially speaking did great for Monolith.
Really? I loved FEAR. I agree it could have used more variety in levels but the combat was fantastic and I still go back to it from itme to time. I consider their "fall" to be when FEAR 2 & Condemned 2 (Both disappointments) came out and Warner Bros. started tightening their grip on them.
Hah. I just finished this game this morning for the first time. I’m on,y a very casual gamer these days and not much a fan of first person shooters, but this one had me engaged from beginning to end and I binged it like no game I’ve binged since I was a kid. NOLF 2's Cate Archer model is reaally pretty.
Yeah, true
it looks fantastic even for todays standards.
actually all the character models look great
Yet, still an excellent game :-)
Too bad it wasn't voice acted by the original voice actor.
This will forever be one of my favorite games of all time. 😭💁🏼♂️❤️
This was a really great video about the best game series ever released on PC. I just need to correct you on one small thing. The body remover is in NOLF2 as well.
Kim, I love you. This is literally my most favorite game of all time and highly underrated. I literally want to be buried with this game. You just made my day!
wow. that seems extreme.
death becomes her As extreme as Kate Archer!
Winterfart Fair enough, I mean underrated as in I don't see it mentioned enough 😣
It was not underrated... it was somewhat overshadowed by Perfect Dark that came out in the same year and was immediately more popular... The two games were extremely similar and the media was only going to talk about one of them.
And he even played the priest in The Princess Bride. He's multi-talented.
Wuv. True wuv.
So, it's basicly the standard situation: X companies sitting around a big pile of money but can't decide how to split, so everybody loses.
Pro tip : watch movies at flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies recently.
@Pedro Ares Yup, been using Flixzone} for since december myself :)
You really got to hate the game industry sometimes and their total disregard for game preservation
Well in the end corporations only care about "gimme money now!". Konami is perfect example of that, with what they do with their IPs.
NOLF 1 & 2 were really excellent games!!! I really would like to see a sequel and/or a remake of them!
I Loved these games... I will most likely just build a "retro" XP gaming PC to enjoy them again as they were intended :)
No need, I was recently replaying Monoloth's masterpeace TRON 2.0 on Win7 with latest unofficial patch, and came back to replaying my fav No One lives Forever 2 (also HD widescreen patched), having a blast
One of my favorite shooters, smart and funny; I miss Cate not coming back for more adventures.
Just found my disc copies of NOLF 1 recently. Love it, thanks for the nostalgia trip, Kim!
I love this series. Played both games several times back in the day and I still have here the originals.
It's really sad that there still isn't a remake or sequel...
i agree with every single bit of your speech ... this game is such an overlooked, forgotten classic!
My GF loves the first game. I've always wanted to give it a shot since I'm a huge Bond fan. Also, those faces on NOLF2 have aged surprisingly well. I think many PS2-era faces have aged quite badly. Thanks for the upload Kim.

Brilliant work as usual. Stream your entire library 24/7 then we can have Kimble Justice TV !
Fantastic, off to play through again thanks to the revival project. I don't complete many games but I remember these like it was yesterday.
Great review! Came back to replaying my favourite No One Lives Forever 2, after finishing another Monoloth's masterpeace TRON 2.0, having a blast! Absolutely love the amazing game design, characters and humor! Must play!
Awesome video! I'm glad to see these games getting some love. I miss them.
used to loved these games back in the day. I did always wonder why they just disppeared. That was such a great in-site to the series. Thank you really enjoyed that! :)

IGI and NOLF one of the best
I played these games thousands of hours as a kid, literally replaying over and over to pin the the ninja women to the walls in the second one haha. I’m estimating around 1500 ~ hours. Might have something to do with very few games that I actually owned.
The second one was actually so precious to me I hid it under the bed. Never felt the same feelings for any other series but then again I was a passionate kid back then.
Thank you for covering the Nolf series. I’ve played the crap out of Nolf 2 back in the days. God I miss my good ol’ Amd k7
This was the go to game for pvp for me and my friends for quite a while. Just too much fun with all the different wild weapons.
I bought these when they first came out! Great games with well written humor, quite a trick to pull off. I still have them somewhere in the attic!
Nitpicking I know, but you incorrectly state that the Body remover Spray is gone in NOLF2. It can be found in the Siberian chapters and used there. You just don't get it very often as you don't get to choose your gear before each mission like the first game.
I played these at their right time. They were awesome games in their day, and still are good games today.
Aw, you should have covered the PS2 port, it's quite a different game.
Agreed, I felt I waited forever for even a mention of that!
I wanted to try project J.A.C.K but never got around to it (heard it was average)
Never tried that version. Come to think of it, I should take a look also at Quake 3 and Half Life for the ps2.
Quake 3 especially looks hideous... Half Life is probably decent.
I own PS2 and the PC versions of these, but never booted up. Worth a rumble in the modern day?
I think NOLF ps2 is the most interesting
Loved NOLF 1 and 2. Have been waiting for nr 3 for years.
I loved those games. Played both of them in the early 2000s and would give anything to go through them again. I still have the physical copies I bought back then, but last time I tried I couldn't get them to work on my modern PC.

I cried so much when they had to break the bad news of not being able to revive it. This is the greatest game of all time and I'm still heartbroken 😭
Excellent video, Kim :)
I f*ckin' loooved this game so much!
My personal rule is that if I can't get hold of a game outside of buying a second hand copy off ebay or otherwise then emulation is completely justified! If you're not gonna provide me with an official way to get hold of a game then any notion of illegality and copyright can quite frankly get to fuck!
Great video, Kim, and an even better game series. It’s been far too long since I’ve played them, so I may have to look over there, a squirrel!

That Guillermo del Toro quote of "the bastards with the money" comes to mind

Absolutely loved these games.
No mention of the excellent Tron 2.0 on your post-NOLF list? Such a shame, especially considering how the opening credits look similar to those in NOLF 2, just with a futuristic approach.
No you're wrong. It aged very well. It was way ahead of its time in every respect.
i finished NOLF 1 for the first time couple of months, loved it! sadly second game crashes a lot even with all the patches n shit.
Ah the memories! And god was she hot, as a fresh teenager I was a little too much into her :D
Still keep both games on my computer, so great especially the first.
I downloaded these games today, before I saw the video! I miss them so much, such a shame...
NOLF is one of my favorite games of all time, haven't had a chance to play the sequel sadly. Would love these on Steam or something.
look at the nolfrevival website
nolfrevival.tk/
thanks so much! I just downloaded them, its been 10 years since I played these.
Happy to help
Abandonware :-)
Omg yes!! One of my favorites games of all time!!
Believe it or not I'd just been thinking how I hope you cover this at some point , and here it is ...
I'm very proud to own both of these, somehow I got genuine copies (PC) on ebay. I didn't know it was considered so rare. I actually tracked the original down because it supports the iFeel (immersion / logitech) force feedback mouse that I managed to find on ebay in 2016.

One of the best PC proper game. This and the 2nd installment are excellent game ever made. NOFL franchise, Perfect Dark, and Perfect Dark Zero are classic spy game with female protagonist
Glad I have two copies of this game and the strategy guide!
My all time favourite game
This is funny, I just recently bought a used copy of No One Lives Forever 2 and then this video comes up. I always wondered why these series disappeared.
NOLF (both 1 and 2) are some of my best gaming experiences ever. Would buy a remaster or sequel in a heart beat.
I remember trying different solutions from the pcgaming wiki and still had problems, but the frame rate limiting is probably on the right track.
get the NOLFrevival copies, for widescreen and bug fixes,, after that use a program, that can limit frames i couldn't get my nvidia drivers to do it. i used DXtory. use it on both NOFL 1 and NOFL 2.. however its only NOFL 2 that really goes haywire. As for fixing your mouse make sure you turn down your Mouse CPI. it needs to be less than 600 this is only a issue in NOLF 2.
Damn, I want to play these! Gotta scout out some source ports...
I hope you'll talk about Monolith, an amazing company in its output.
SHOGO:MAD is one of my favourite games of all time. It's just sooo brilliant. Please do a video on Shogo Kim?
Can't get this on steam, gog or epic, but you can download it from many sites. No reason why we couldn't get a 60s shooter with female agent in a spy world.
Just last week I was telling a young relative about the kitten bombs.
Oooooooooh the MP memories, especially the clan wars........Love this game (NOLF 1 I mean)
Thanks for the enjoyable review
Kim, saying about rights to games I really wish someone would get the rights to 'Exhumed' (Powerslave in the US ) I really wish it could be remastered. I still own the 3 versions on Saturn, Pc and PlayStation and all 3 are different and I love that.
No One Lives Forever is almost TWENTY YEARS OLD? Jesus christ, I feel fucking old now.
Good god, this game is almost 20 years old.
Life really is a fucking blink, isn't it.
Great video! Love it.
Amazing.
Actually, there's no point in opening it if they're available for free online with no illegal implications to be had.
Re-vell? Revel Kim. Revel. ;)
I noticed it the first time and wondered if I'd misheard, then a second time and started getting confused...then by the third I was questioning if I even knew the right word
23:41 - Warner Bros:
Sorry Night Dive, Cate Archer wasn't part of our deal.
I remember this m'lady...
How have I never heard of this series before?
I loved NOLF. I was very disappointed by NOLF2, it crashed all the time, so I never managed to play it all the way through. Might give it another try.
i had the first game on ps2 and liked it. not sure what is different but it was good. i hever had problem with stealth. stealth worked good on ps2 version at least.
Hey old favourites!!!
Shame that Archer has not been seen for years...
Well done good sir! 👏👏👏
Ah man , I loved these games!!
Somehow I've never gotten around to playing either of these games, I mean if you don't count a five-minute testing.. Think I'll remedy this tonight! The vid sure as hell made me want tae.
I had a big crush on her player model for the first game
Awesome stuff. For me it was a total bummer when monolith went on to produce the "office shooter" that was fear.
Colpo Rosso agree
fear 1 and its expansion was awesome. 2 and 3 total trash
I'm not saying that fear is a bad game, it's just a bit bland. At least from my point of view. But I clearly see that for some might be a very good horror action fps. And also, commercially speaking did great for Monolith.
FEAR 2 is splendid, actually. 3 was alright. Please stop talking in these extreme hyperbolic terms, it's unproductive
Really? I loved FEAR. I agree it could have used more variety in levels but the combat was fantastic and I still go back to it from itme to time. I consider their "fall" to be when FEAR 2 & Condemned 2 (Both disappointments) came out and Warner Bros. started tightening their grip on them.
LMFAO! Mentions Deus Ex, then re-installs it! I did this a couple of months ago!
What game was that at 0:32
Advent Rising, I think.
i just came here from netflix archer. thinking how netflix archer is a mix of austin powers, 007 aaaand cate archer's nolf
I used to own the PS2 port of No One Lives Forever... Didn't like it as a kid, because I've no idea what am I supposed to do.
tbf in hindsight seeing how night dive is faltering, it's probably good that they didn't get the trademark.
Reviews weren't unanimous. PC ZONE gave it an insulting 69%. Never forgave them for that.
Where can I download it?
nolfrevival.tk/
Anyone else who reacted to Archer looking 35ish in NOLF and 25ish in NOLF2? ':D
I'd love to play these games. I guess I may have to go to these fan sites. But I have a couple of more fpses to beat though
So if the game was playing on some of those old spy shows and movies, that explains why she reminds me of Emma Peel.
