Smaug had reached the pinnacle of his greedy ambition. In his arrogance he slept in the knowledge he was invincible. But when Bilbo arrived, just by sniffing, Smaug learned something new that he did not expect. He could smell him but he could not see him. The power of the ring vanquished him. His lack of power to counter Bilbo's advantage led Smaug to a rash act of vengeance against the lake people. He undid himself because the other hero exploited his physical vulnerability ... the weak spot on his chest close to his heart. The dragon's Achilles heel was that he was faint of heart. Bilbo exposed it figuratively. Brand exploited it with an arrow. This is the first example of the ring leading to its own undoing. Smaug's fall in a blaze of fire foreshadowed the fall of the ring into the cracks of doom Indeed, Smaug was a creature of Sauron's self-destruction.
His own overconfidence led to his death. He was overly confident in his own natural armor. He forgot to check on it he was so over confident in it. He never realized he was one well placed arrow away from death. He thought he was beyond his own death’s reach. He could not have been more wrong.
Clearly the key factor was the thrush. Not only did it reveal the keyhole of the secret door to Thorin's company, but it also carried Bilbo's news of Smaug's weak spot to Bard the Bowman. All of Middle-Earth owes a huge debt to that thrush.
I like games where dragons are not many, but because there are so few, they are well known, almost like evil celebrities. When your world has nothing but plentiful dragons, they lose that rare factor. To kill one is to topple their numbers, but to let it live is to give it the chance to turn your city to ruin

Insightful analysis! You've captured the essence of Smaug's downfall and its parallels with the fate of the One Ring. Thanks for sharing!
Absolute poetry!

Smaug’s overconfidence was his weakness much like Sauron.
Clearly the key factor was the thrush.

Sauron should have paid more attention to Morgoth's pets
Considering the pets were near or actual equals, would those pets actually submit to one who will not share power?

I think Smaug let himself be killed.
He knew he was the last fire drake and his line was ovr.
Would Smaug have listened to Sauron?
WOULD SMAUG HAVE
MATED +LISTENED TO
SAURON THAN ENCOURAGED
HIS MATE
(IF HE HAD 1)
AS WELL AS
HATCHLINGS
(IF THERE WERE ANY).
👍👍👍
