It's always a shame when a movie with great potential gets cancelled, and this one is no different. That said, it's still amazing seeing these clips and the animation process, and how the overall film could've worked. Just the idea of blending CGI and hand-drawn animation together like this is fascinating! Even if we'll never see this movie come to life, hopefully we'll still get another film that will tackle this technique in a really creative way.
That unknown intro at 9:04 is just wonderful! It emulates vintage cartoons And live action films at the same time! Also the finished footage with the lamp is stunning!!
I'm trying to go off of what we've seen to come up with what the story was at the time of its cancellation and the 3 seperate acts of the movie even with 12 minutes of animation found, so heres what I think is accurate. Sorry if my idea is sloppy LOL Act 1: Daniel is introduced as a boring ass guy working at a boring ass job. His shadow is consistently distracted and has a want to try to change him but doesn't know how. Daniel goes about his day while his shadow narrates how boring his life is as a shadow. Soon Daniel come acrosses Heidi at the same apartment complex as his, and tries to talk to her. They soon develop a bit of a friendship despite Daniel's anxiety and struggling ability to hold a conversation. Soon afterwards, Shadow Dan in the shadow world finds out he has been granted the ability to control Daniel using force such as moving his limbs. Act 2: At the apartment, Shadow Dan with his powers starts messing with Daniel and controlling him to the point of a breakdown for Daniel who has no idea what's going on. Heidi calls him though and asks if he wants to go get tea which he agrees. Daniel is very nervous now knowing what's going to unfold tomorrow, so he goes to sleep in fear. Soon, Daniel wakes up with a bit of confidence, but Shadow Dan with his new found powers ruin it, and the tea date ends up being a complete disaster due to Dan's actions. Heidi though is very fascinated with Daniel and has new found interest in him as a person. In the midst of Heidi and Daniel's relationship, the evil shadow villain starts making his presence in the shadow world, bullying most of the civilians in the shadow world, causing Dan to have to explain to Daniel what's going on, but Daniel doesn't care. Now, I can't think of much for Act 3 due to most of the animation tests taking place in the 1st and 2nd act, but I can picture the epic climax of the Shadow world and how Daniel has to give up his control to Shadow Dan temporarily to stop the rebellion, and how Daniel during the fight has to grab Shadow Dan's hand and bring himself into the Shadow World. During Act 3, Daniel and Heidi begin dating after having a successful 2nd date after Daniel and Dan make a compromise to help each other out by Dan not annoying Daniel during his date and Daniel helping Dan with his Shadow World conflict. After the epic battle ends and the villain is defeated, the movie ends with Daniel and Heidi building a house together and get married and soon Shadow Dan discovering Shadow Heidi, and falling in love. A happy ending for both.
Actually the cancelation of both movies were good business moves, if me and my shadow came out, dreamworks could have very well gone bankrupt. Same for larrikins.

Perhaps if it was made at a different time under better circumstances or perhaps under a different studio we would have been able to see it. Maybe with crowdfunding?
I just found about about Me and My Shadow an hour ago and I'm already head over heels with this idea! It looks so amazing! The shadow is so fluid and moves with such an enthusiastic expression. GOD what I wouldn't give to see this whole thing in its final state. The story they've crafted seems a little rudimentary though, so here's MY pitch... Daniel Grub is a withdrawn nobody who spends his days going to work and reading books. He dreams of an exciting life full of meeting new people and places far away, but his anxiety flares up every time he even looks at the door of his apartment. And then, there's Heidi, the girl next door who seems to be everything he isn't. But Daniel, knowing himself better than anyone, swallows his desires and finds contentment in the mundane. Until, one day... his shadow starts to move on its own. At first, Daniel thinks he's hallucinating. The shadow moves an inch one way when he's sitting still, maybe it seems to get darker on its own, but he's never really sure. It must be the stress from work. Then, when Daniel finally decides to try and ask out Heidi, the shadow takes control. He smiles, clutches his hand along with Daniel's and the two finally have a moment to talk. Shadan (Shadow Dan) expresses his desire for a life of adventure and romance. He wants to go out and experience the world and all its pleasures! Shadan explains that, in the shadow world, shadows can only experience life when their caster is in the light. Only when the caster's shadow appears in the real world, are they able to feel the warmth of the sun, taste food, touch the hand of someone they love. After explaining all this Shadan does his best to encourage Dan to start living his life regardless of his anxiety. Dan refuses, of course, because anxiety can't just go away. There's no "off" switch. Shadan gives an ultimatum. Either Dan MUST learn to live his life to the fullest, or Shadan will take over his body so he's able to experience life. The rest of the movie is a story about two very different people trying to share the same space (or body in this case), the relentlessness of anxiety and the importance of bodily autonomy. ... REALLY wish we could see this movie some day. TT_TT
that last story board was fucking awesome and seemingly had absolutely nothing to do with all of the other clips besides the base concept of living shadows

What a shame, the concept of a shadow being its own entity is amazing (as are the charming character designs). If the movie and its original title can be saved (Me and My Shadow sounds more exciting than Shadows) I would definitely want to see and own it.
No way we didn’t get this with Olaf and flint lockwood in the same movie 😢
if they end up doing, i hope they maintain this style.
god this would've been such a great movie, I love the contrast with 2D and 3D combined we need more movies like that and this one would've just won with flying colors. I love this concept so much I really wish they went back and looked at it again because all the effort put into it already just seemed so genuine!! Truly is a shame we never got to see a finished product.
0:27 This is music from Soarin at California Adventure and Epcot.
7:16 wait, so the shadows can use the perceived view of a shadow as if it were their own like THAT? THAT'S SO COOL, WHAT POSSESSED THEM TO SCRAP THIS?
GOD I WISH!! This movie became real
6:48 Something about that line delivery reminds me of Scott the Woz.
I sooo wish this wasn’t canceled. It looks good
He easily could have been a Tumblr sexyman, and this could be one of the best animations ever.
2:28 he acts kinda like hiccup from httyd tbh, it's just the way he moves and reacts lol
This movie has to be made!
I hope the success of Puss in Boots 2 reignite the flame
great work!!!!! 😌😌😌 a lot of it seems to be the correct order to me and it makes a cool watch :) would love to see someone use the finished takes combined with the shots only in unfinished form to make a approximate version of the film
MAN, not only was this gold, but they were making so much progress already, and REALLY onto something!
It’s wild how a this movie has a huge fan base for a movie that doesn’t exist 😢
Maybe some day this movie will be finished and return.
6:43
i like that he gets sent back down, clever!!
This was actually really fun to watch despite me not knowing what’s the context sometimes. I love how expressive the shadow is too.
If you have any questions regarding the story I'd be happy to answer them!
Gives me meet the Robinson’s vibes in the best way possible
I'm from Peru and man, it would've been awesome to see Lake Titicaca in a DreamWorks movie lol A shame the movie was cancelled, the concept looks absolutely great, fingers crossed it can one day be picked up again tho!
This is masterpiece...
Here goes to hoping they somehow revive this movie. Same with Larrikins
2:59 wow this is gold material
this feels more “classic disney” than any modern disney. man this would’ve been interesting
My favorite childhood movie that never was :(
I had only seen clips that included Shadow Dan so far, thank you so much for putting this together! Love to see more of this movie!
This could've been Bill Hader's best voice work, with how he kinda acts like the genie from aladdin. I hope this gets picked up somehow, I would do anything to see this movie finished.
bro this movie would be sick
This feels like it would have been Pixar-level and would have been amazing to see.
Every single time RUclips, recommends me this video, which is a lot for some reason, all I think is that the character on the thumbnail looks like the Dad from boss baby
Dude if they ever revive this....im sure 80% are gonna watch it just because of the hype+the longing of the movie release...
I mean....the demand is already high
At this point the movie has been marketing itself for years
Honestly it’s just sad when cool concepts of a movie or anything get scrapped and it literally had test animations 😕
AIN’T NO WAY WE GOT BOSS BABY BEFORE THIS MASTERPIECE…
We have saved Dazz's second MaMS video- good job everyone
1:22 the cat is soooooooooooooo cute im gonna cry😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I'm looking forward to seeing "me and my shadow", whenever it comes out.
It's not coming out
Man I wish they’d bring this back, I love the concept and feel like this would’ve been a new favorite movie for me 😢
This looks like the only animated movie from any of the big animation studios that I would actually genuinely enjoy watching, and it doesn't even exist.
imagine all the meme templates if they made this
I’m still sad till this day that boss baby was made over this :((
Hopefully another company can make this
7:27😂
5:51 *"theres no way a shadow would ever hurt a caster."* ... "(Wait a daym minute-)" 😂
I'm gunna go cry myself to sleep that this doesn't exist again
This must be a great movie if they didn't cancel it
What a shame, the concept of a shadow being its own entity is amazing (as are the charming character designs). If the movie and its original title can be saved (Me and My Shadow sounds more exciting than Shadows) I would definitely want to see and own it. Animation is the perfect medium for exploring imaginative stories and your film blending 3D with 2D would have made it a masterpiece. I truly hope your film gets a chance to live again.
They even had the idea to include the dream sequence that encapsulates all a 6 year old would dream to do
That shadow world was so cool.
