  • What's the deal with hybridizing skink species? In this episode I take on another difficult subject. The topic of hybrid skinks in the captive population. This mini rant/ discussion comes from my purist-minded public zoo background.

    Given what we have done to this planet in record time, we need to be thinking of the future. Look at what conservation groups are doing now to try to recapture pure blood American Bison. Because 100yrs ago we bred them with imported cattle, even most zoos don't have access to pure specimens of what is the only true North American megafauna. What limited animals without cow genetics we have may not have enough genetic diversity to ensure healthy populations into the future. Millions of dollars are being pumped in to try to create a small handful of purebred babies each year. We didn't know better a century and change ago when we started diluting bison genetics - but we DO know better now. Or, at least the data is available to us....if we choose to see it.
    Whatever happened to "when you know better, you do better"??? Because we aren't really doing better.
    Whether or not you believe it is caused by humans (it is) climate change is having a MASSIVE impact on reptiles and amphibians specifically. Not 100yrs from now, not when our kids are all grown, not in a few years. Literally right now, today. Because so many oviparous species have sexual expression which is determined by temperature, we are seeing a dramatic shift in the ratios of males to females in certain wild populations. There are species who will be unable to breed in the wild before my daughter is out of college. In a situation like this, the purity of genetics in herpticulture may be the only way to ensure wild diversity into the future.
    Much like TC, I am a fan of fact and peer review. You can research everything I have said, and find it to be accepted science.
    This whole thing starts to feel like the spider ball python debate to me. It is so disgustingly Veruca Salt. "But but b-b-b-but they look COOOOOL. And, like, it could totally be fine! I really WANT this one specific morph and it doesn't matter if I can get pattern reduction from a genotype which doesn't risk neurological defects - I want what I want and you can't tell me it is bad!!!!!" I get it, we are selfish creatures who have the prefrontal cortices to have all the hubris we could ever use to any destructive ends we care to. That being said, "but I WANT IT!!!!" just is not good enough for me. I don't understand why it is good enough for anyone.

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah there aren’t many pure bison anymore either. I wish in many cases humans would just butt out.

    I agree with some species purity matters especially in species that are protected and won’t be available to the general community but for very common species that are not even close to being considered a protected species I see no reason not to experiment with hybridization who knows maybe you will create something that is incredibly cool I would love to cross and breed garter snakes to try and make a hybrid that looks exactly like or almost exactly like the San Francisco garter snake that nearly extinct something like that could reduce black market or poaching of wild caught species I could see it being a very good thing potentially

    Hey TC, I bought a northern blue tongue skink from an expo a week ago. They said he was 8 weeks old, but he seems slightly smaller than your 1 month old babies. Did they lie and say he was older than he actually was, or do you think they feed him less often than you do. (Each time I’ve given him a meal he has eaten slightly more than the size of his head)

    • @ReptileMountainTV

    This annoys me a lot on the Carpet Python community, it's mixes of subspecies everywhere and then even worse people breeding them with GTPs and Bredli's. So many snakes labeled as "Jungles" or "Diamonds" that are weird crosses.

    do all skink species act toward each other behaviorly in the same way? i would never hybridize my beautiful merauke but i'm not sure i would be able to find another merauke owner in my area to help sex the little guy. would a different sub species work?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  5 лет назад

      They will interbreed. I would not cross anything but a Merauke for sure. There are some great breeders who could sell you a CBB Merauke if you wanted to start breeding them.

    • @scrunglenut6222
      @scrunglenut6222 5 лет назад +1

      @@ReptileMountainTV i would only be using the other non-merauke skink to observe the behavior of my own skink, to help sex him, but if the risk of interbreeding during the brief interaction period is too high, I definitely won't! thanks for the help : ) I'll have to try and arrange a meetup of some sort, or take him to an expert. I'm a little worried about purchasing another skink that is the same sex as my own.

    Another great video, TC. Humans sure have muddied the waters when it comes to animal genetics and purity, unfortunately mostly out of greed. Side note: I'm guessing care requirements between Northerns and Indos, such as humidity, even become an issue when hybridizing the two species. 🦎👍

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Cole, yeah As far as Northerns and Indos care isn't a huge issue as Northerns actually can handle high amounts of humidity and temp like Indos. It gets really bad when mixing something like a Victorian Eastern with an Indo or something like that. That is certainly a concern with hybrids in general though. Great point.

    Great video as always. I do enjoy the in depth information. I do wonder though about natural hybridization in the wild. I watch or read something about tegu species hybridization because of territory intersecting. Will these type of hybridization fall into a" do not do this in captivity." It was just a curiosity I had.
    Either way my view is similar to yours. I feel like hybrids are a wow factors. I know there are extreme opposites to this topic. But I can understand how it can affect the hobby. Especially when you are sold a hybrid but someone could purposely or accidentally mislabeled it as a pure line. That could be a disaster as now several people do believe their hybrids are pure.
    The genetic testing you are contributing in seems exciting.:)

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  5 лет назад +1

      Natural hybrids are not a reason to do so in captivity. No professionals would consider a captive bred hybrid a representation of a naturally occurring one.

    My Bluey was called Tiliqua scincoides spec. The breeder said he is a Northern, but not a pure blood Northern. His ancesters were a pure Northern and an australian blue tongue skink from a little bit more eastern, which exact subspecies is unknown. Maybe just a Northern that occured more in the east. Would you consider him to be a hybrid? He looks exactly like a Northern and is healthy. But I'm actually very against hybrids so I was wondering if he would be considered one. He was the only breeder that sells australian blueys and told me that it's pretty much impossible to find a completly pure blood Northerns where I live.
