He didn't ask to be paid when he was initially asked to join them on stage? Sound like it's his issue, to me. Metallica might not have even been aware of the situation. Why wouldn't he negotiate payment before he played? Why would you sign anything without reading it? I never thought a special guest got paid. It makes them money when their catalog starts selling again.
Really? I was a roadie for the band Tesla, one of Metallica’s “friend” bands and one that gave them a toaster-oven and some bologna when Metallica famously slept in the studio they recorded Kill ‘em All in, lol. I always thought they were nice guys but working with people and shaking their hand and hanging out with them for an hour is much different even though I met them a few times. I was a roadie for Tesla in the mid 90’s, a BAD time for bands like Tesla… even though they weren’t technically a “hair-metal, ass-rock” band they “associated” with “those kinds of people” (label made them “glam out” to sell more records) and were killed off by grunge. Tesla later reformed.
Metallica stopped making great music after "And justice for all". The black album was somewhat OK but every other release since then was crap. Metallica is becoming the honorable successor of the Rolling Stones: replaying songs that are at least 40 years old.
Everyone saying he should have known better or he should have been more assertive should realize what the music industry was like in the sixties and seventies especially. Eric should've talked to Metallica and ask them to help him get his royalties. DIAMOND HEAD's Brian Tatler said that when he met Lars Ulrich, Lars asked, 'Are you getting your royalties?'. Then Lars gave Brian his lawyer to contact. He also told Brian to join PRS. So when METALLICA performed it live, then Brian would notice and get a statement and it would say 'live performance.' So he receives money when DIAMOND HEAD songs are performed live.
They probably figured that he got his payment through the royal money he would have received after they revitalized the song. Yeah...the song is considered traditional, thus it is public domaini..but they used his arrangement..so he would have gotten paid. I think I recall the one of the guys from Diamond Head saying that they made more money from royaliies after Metallica covered one of their songs than they earned in their entire career. Those dimes and nickles actually add up if you huge act. Look at Jason Newstead. He only gets performance royalties for the majority of his work in Metallica. He only has 2 or 3 writing credits (where the majority of the money is)...but he is a multi millionaire from just the sliver of the metallica royalities that are his share.
Eric said that he didn't know who they are. If Eric had been receiving royalty checks from Metallica for using his arrangement, he would have known who they are. DIAMOND HEAD's Brian Tatler said that Lars Ulrich helped him get his royalties. Lars gave him a lawyer to contact. He also told Brian to join PRS. So when METALLICA performed it live, then Brian would notice and get a statement and it would say 'live performance.' So he receives money when DIAMOND HEAD songs are performed live. They owe him nothing. He could have simply said I’ve never heard of you no thanks but he didn’t. He knows them, has absolutely heard of them and was a deek
Yes you're right. While Phil's last name is commonly pronounced 'Linnet', according to his two daughters “Lie-not” is correct. Most people pronounce it 'Linnet' though. Thank you for correcting
Metallica covers 'Whiskey In The Jar" really well but that version with Eric Bell and Gary Moore from the Phil Lynott tribute show in Dublin in '05 is absolutely the best tho IMO. Those two with their guitars bring that old Thin Lizzy sound back to life again and it just sounds RIGHT!
And as someone mentioned, not only the guitar work but the 'Irish' in those two gents voices is definitely the icing on the cake for this old Irish folk song.
Yes I like that video with Eric Bell and Gary Moore playing Whiskey In the Jar in Dublin in 2005. To be honest I don't like Gary's singing there. Gary doesn't sing but shouts out the words while Eric sings it just beautifully. I think Gary covers the Metallica version and Eric sings it like Phil Lynott. I think you can see in the video that at one point Eric was annoyed with Gary's shouting during the last chorus. But overall that was a great performance.
Is it his ? Its an old Irish folk song. Ask Brian from Diamond Head about Metallica royalties, he admits he's made more money from them covering his songs than his band did.
Yes Brian Tatler says, "It's my biggest source of income. It's great and I don't know what I would do without it. It gives me the freedom to do what I like."
I think it's possible that Eric wasn't into that type of music and he had never listened to Metallica but he should've asked people about them. Yes it's kinda sad. Eric should've got a ton of money for the Thin Lizzy version of 'Whiskey in the Jar' which Metallica covered. I think he didn't feel comfortable to ask for money and in the end he was upset that Metallica guys are so well off and he received nothing.
It’s a pity Eric is being very petty about this. Chances are because Eric never asked for money Metallica thought he didn’t want paying. Everyone knows they are very generous with their $$$.
