      A pair of these owls live in the woods behind my house. One of them will call out, and the other day I was peeling corn and It called out in my direction, so I decided to respond back. We had a back and forth exchange of hoots for about three minutes before my dog herd the owl and started to bark at it. Nice going Chloe you bitch

    We dread the nights the owls are hooting out in the woods because our yellow Lab doesn't know what they are and feels that they are a huge danger to us all. We hoped she would watch this and learn. But no. She is now racing about the house telling us about the monsters that are outside waiting for us. But thank you. I enjoyed this a lot, even if Lucy didn't.

    I am to understand that if you try calling to these things, there's a good chance they will respond to you, and, if you're lucky, fly in for a closer look at you. I remember years ago I was camping somewhere and a group of us led by a pair of rangers went out on a hiking trail at night and we tried doing a little owl talk. We actually got somebody to respond to us and we think it came in for a closer look. Unfortunately, it must have seen us because it stopped responding. I will admit though that that experience was interesting.

    I'm not even kidding when I say this..Last year, late spring I was skateboarding at night sometime around when cicadas are out and about. They are almost everywhere in NC, I like cicadas, they are pretty cool bugs and one was on the sidewalk so I walked over to say hi. I went to nudge the cicada with my foot to see if he'd buzz and one of these owls swooped down and almost hit my leg. Like this bird was literally less than a foot away from my leg, it scared the freakin' hell out of me. Simply because this bird is pretty large and you can't hear them so when he came down my back was semi turned and all I see is this massive predator bird go after the same cicada. He missed cause I think I blocked him a little. I think he thought I was going after his meal since cicadas are vastly eaten by many wildlife, hell even humans eat cicadas in some countries. This owl had me twisted tho, I guess I should be thankful I really came that close to a barred owl in the wild. I was in awe, but it wasn't without surprising fear.

    • @noapprovalneeded2317
      @noapprovalneeded2317 8 лет назад +8

      Mark Bulgarin oh no doubt man, and it did! I mean..it's wingspan was probably about 3-4 feet long so getting that close to a large animal all of a sudden is pretty frightening. I love just about all animals myself. I especially like showing love for animals people think are ugly or don't care much for, like insects..snakes, spiders, possums. Owls are a majestic creature and are a lot more common than people tend to think they are. You can literally usually step outside of your home and be your own wildlife adventurer. I live in the Suburbs of NC but I've had close encounters with foxes, raccoons, deer, hawks, snakes, vultures you really run into a lot of stuff if you just go out and explore. This is why I love skateboarding so much too..it gets me outside where I have the opportunities to run into critters. A lot of the greatest things in life are totally free..it's all about the experience.

    This is the sweetest, most beautiful and most relaxing sound in the world to me presently. I used to hear this sound in the dead of night in the woods outside my window when I lay on by bed after a tiring day. Even though I did not know what this sound came from, strangely, I was not concerned because the sound was so funny and I loved it. I was VERY curious as to what made this sound. Now that I know that it is made by an owl (one of my favorite animals), it's even more relaxing and pleasing and I love it.

    I have these out back and often hear them vocalizing at night from Spring through the Fall. I've been wondering what sort of owl they were for a number of years. Thanks! BTW, they also have a call that sounds a bit like a Kookaburra.

      GoddardsJournal yeah, I think mates break into that crazy, kookaburra-like sound.

      WildwoodClaire1 Yes, there were two or maybe more when I've heard the outbreaks of crazy. Just yesterday there was one here doing the usual _who cooks for you_ in the middle of the afternoon, unusually early in the day. I figure it's a spring thing.

      They are also more diurnal than most owls. I've seen them during the day in the Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

      *****
      No they nest in trees.. The only species that nests underground is the burrowing owl, though they are also mostly diurnal. Sadly they are in decline because of feral cats and dogs and loss of habitat

      Kookaburra- that's the kind of cackling sound they do sometimes? I told the little girls next door that the owls tell each other jokes with the "hoo-hoo-hoohoo-hoooo" and the other sound is them laughing. 🙂

    One time we had a pond full of fish and each day one vanished from the pond. We wondered what was happening until one night we see one of these owls chillin on our porch looking at our pond and then it looked at us with a serious look like, "Yea I took yo fish, what you gonna do?"

    • @Woodsyone
      @Woodsyone 3 года назад +1

      There are fishing owls but to my knowledge the barred is not one of them. The culprit was probably a mink or coon. Herons are known terrors on fish in those little decorative backyard ponds.

    Omg thanks for this video. A sound woke me and my mom up at 2 a.m. and we were wondering what animal could be making this distinct noise (exactly the same as the one you provided in this video). Ofcourse we guessed it was an owl but weren't sure since I was surprised at how perfectly intermittent it was almost as if someone is playing the same audio recording every 10 seconds. I decided to search up the sound of an owl and came across this video which perfectly portrayed the same exact sound.

    Owls can see ABSOLOUTELY EVERYTHING! Even in the aviary world their VISION AND HEARING is off the scale! They like to hunt from the big trees in the tree line behind my house! They are SO AWESOME! When they LOOK AT YOU it is like they are looking right THROUGH YOU! Then they POOP all OVER my TREES

    I was hearing this owl all night. The sound was so repetitive that I thought someone was playing a recording loop! I started wondering if it was real or some weird ritual going on at someone’s house. It sounded suspicious. Well, I heard it again tonight, so I decided to check out owl sounds. After a dozen or so, I found this one! Sounds exactly like the one in my neighborhood! I had no idea they like to repeat their calls using the same pattern over and over again! It was a relief to find out it was a real bird and not some scary recording!!
