Great alternative version of a wonderful song from one of the greatest British bands ever. Long live Mott the Hoople. A band who wrote the soundtrack to so many our our lives without the commercial success they deserved. Thanks for posting this.

The Journey is one of my 2 or 3 favorite songs.....ever. All The Way From Memphis is #1 ,a song with great lyrics and a monster live in concert.
For me no other rock band came close to the power and at the same time the sensitivity that Mott the Hoople displayed in their music.
Thank you for posting this anternate version of The Journey!
    Bill

There's some truth in what you say. Commercial success came at a price, and as much as they gained they also lost something of what made them special. It's a finely balanced argument though, because the early stuff that we all love wasn't always great either. Perhaps without the post Bowie years we wouldn't have an essential part of the 'mythology' - the hollowness of fame, about which Ian wrote so movingly, and without which Mott the Hoople wouldn't be loved quite as much as they are.

Beautiful song. In places, the keyboards are reminiscent of John 'Rabbit' Bundrick's playing on Free's 'Muddy Water'.

The only reason this wasn't their number-one song is because of the length. A Tour de Force by one of the greatest bands of all time.

always loved Mott, Verden Allens playing is so distinct, I can not find the B side of 'sweet angeline' (Downtown) another fine example of V A at his best....thanks for the memory it made me dig out Capers and clean it up ready for another 10 years at 62 I better hurry up...thanks again all

A really beautiful version. Not so different from the others, but softer and therefore more resonant, more haunting.

I know people love All The Young Dudes, but this is a much better song and a tough song to listen to when alone. It really speaks to what life can be like when we become selfish

Nice alternative track, not heard this version before today, I like it. The original that I, as a teenager, used to play over and over again, thanks for the upload

An album is a collection of songs, regardless of the format. You can buy an album on vinyl (LP) or as a CD. This alternate version of "The Journey" is a bonus track on the current in-print remastered CD currently available on Amazon.

This band self-destructed almost before they began but the songs you hear by them are excellent. Should have been bigger but that's showbiz.

This brings back some great memories, saw them regularly at birmingham town hall, anyone out there remember they always used to come on stage to Bringer of Joy(Holst),never heard this version before, gonna have to dig out Braincapers and Madshadows now.Great band not convinced Bowie did them any favours there music turned to shit but I suppose they made some money.

And they would go off with Holst's Jupiter. I saw them at the Rainbow, London during their Brain Capers era. Crazy that at the peak of their live magic they were going broke and had to change direction to earn a quid with pop songs, though I do think All the Young Dudes was magic.

Thank you my friend for adding this video. A fellow fan I think. But this is not the original version I know although is perhaps even more beautiful. Any info about this would be great. Thank you again Oddvar.

This version was recorded prior to ask Guy Stevens to produce them again for this album (he had produced their two first). As usual with Guy, he discarded everything he was not part in it, and they re-recorded again, but for the band they thought this was a better version than the one finally did into the album.

@@jralconero thank you for explaining that background. I don't have your detailed knowledge of the Mott story (I did read Diary etc in the 70s). I was initially introduced to the Wildlife LP (beautiful songs, especially Waterlow) and then the back catalogue. When Mott came out I saw them in London but the next London gig was cancelled when Ian Hunter was ill and then left. From 73 they were my favourite band and I could write loads more. You've prompted me to listen to this song right now. Thanks again 😊👍🏻

Ian sounds like Rod Stewart, or vice versa. Personally, I think Stewart got way more acclaim than his talent warranted , and Hoople got way less.

Oh, you mean SIR Rod? Before or after his over strained voice gave out over doing disco songs? He used to be my hero but Ian still is

Many people cite him as a Dylan clone- But I always found him more a bluesman a la Stewart… I mean, the band sounded like The Faces. Lost out when Verden left!
