- In the latest episode of Rolling Stone’s The First Time, Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha from the movie Sylvie’s Love kick things off by discussing their initial reading of the script and what drew them to the film.
“I just remember listening to all the songs in the script, so it felt like a musical experience,” Thompson recalls. “I would pause it, play the song, and then continue reading with the song. So I remember it musically actually, which makes sense because I feel like the film is partially a love letter to music and the way it brings us together - quite literally sometimes.”
Directed by Eugene Ashe, Sylvie’s Love is a romantic drama based in Harlem in the late Fifties and early Sixties. It tells the story of Sylvie (Thompson), a young woman with dreams of working in the television industry, who ends up falling in love with Robert (Asomugha), a talented jazz saxophonist. The pair meet one summer while Sylvie is working in her father’s record store, where they end up bonding over their mutual love for music. What starts off as a friendship quickly blossoms into a summer romance as Sylvie awaits her fiance’s return from the war.

Nnamdi did such a great job. So chilled. I followed him as a player but his transition to acting was phenomenal.

Love this movie! It's gone straight too my number one. No guns, racism, violence. Just a boy and a girl falling in love. The best black romance since Love Jones. Sylvie's Love was shot very well and Tessa looked fabulous in her role.5 🌟
I 100% agree! Love Jones chemistry was spot on & Sylie’s Love reminds me of just that. I enjoy watching Black love stories that feels authentic. Another perspective could be because “the arts” brought them together and I am a fan of poetry & music.

Great interview. I loved everything about Sylvie's Love, but I thought Eugene Ashe did a phenomenal job, the music, including the instrumental music that supports the scenes, absolutely Nancy and Sam. I think Sylvie and Robert were amazing as well. When Sylvie went to see Robert play and "Mona Lisa " was asking her if that was him on sax and Sylvie couldn't respond because she was mesmerized by the music with tears in her eyes, I loved it. Music has always affected me that way, so I got it. It was a great movie and I've watched it five times. It's a true classic love story that was well orchestrated.
An awesome movie based on a beautiful love story. I can't explain why but the depth of this movie left me speechless. It was truly refreshing to see two Black people in a love story of this magnitude. After watching it I became pensive about my past relationships.....very provocative I think.

It's already been confirmed by Kevin Feige himself that T'Challa (Black Panther) will not be recasted.
@Brandon Lukas I knew that T'Challa won't be replace but another person will wear the Black Panther suit. In the comics Shuri took over the Black Panther but I would like if they put in another brother that had been away from Wakanda and Shuri bring him back to be king.
