Oh, to remove the blurry effect of the interface, you go to the SAI program folder in the windows file manager, right click on the exe, click "properties", then the "compatability" tab, then click "Change high DPI settings" and make sure "skip scaling problems" is unchecked. SAI was originally intended for 1024x768 monitors, but i got it pixel perfect on 4K using these settings. Paint Tool SAI 2, which is out now in 2023, has better support for 4K screens without making the icons too tiny. I've been a paint tool SAI user since 2010. The brushes do what I need it to do, the layer and brush textures do interesting things when you adjust the size and opacity of the tex maps. My favorite thing about SAI is that unlike Clip Studio Paint, the brush tyoe, brushsize, and brush options are all on one long menu, so when you need to change brushes, you just tap tap tap and you're back on the canvas. Meanwhile in CSP, you're just hopping from menu to menu to menu, like man, why does the mere concept of setting up a brush in clip studio feel more like manual labor than actually drawing? Everything in CSP is all over the place and requires spawning and despawning at least 3 additional menus boxes that cover the canvas. How do you people deal? In SAI, each column of menus has everything relevant- one column having navigation and layers, the other having color and brushes, Everything is there. I've had CSP since maybe 2015 and I want to flip a table everytime I use it and so aside from a 6-page comic, I've never completed any illustrations on it. In the 4 years I haven't used SAI, I phased into traditional art to spend less time on a computer and then I've gotten an ipad with Procreate and imported custom SAI texture maps to use with the software. I hate apple's ecosystem, but procreate, like SAI, has a simplistic, easy to follow user interface. brush management on the side, easy color fill, color selection and swatch management on the right, tool selection at the top. Android only has Infinite Painter for simple art software because Medibang is quite awful with how the tool icons are so far away from the tool setting icons, making it possibly worse that CSP, and then MacOS only has modern art software that are overinflated with menus of things I have no use for. I've recently purchased an XP Pen Artist tablet to get back into desktop art software and ended up going back to my 5yr old barbecue grill of a windows laptop to draw things on SAI even though I also have an M1 macbook with clip studio.
I’ve been using csp for about a year. It’s costed more than sai and it was worth it- for a lot of people. As a digital artist I’ve tried alot of other painting softwares. Csp is an amazing app but it felt to stiff and complex for me to use freely. But I found it easier on sai. Ik this video is like ancient but this is here if anyone needs a heads up.
Sai 2.0 will be a huge improvement even if it is still in beta but i contacted the dev and he said that he will ad touch support and palm rejection in future update of sai 2
I've been using SAI for years already :') I'm still stuck at the old first version and I had no plans of upgrading to another program despite being outdated and lack of other features but it really works on my old laptop and my Wacom. Love the brushes and the blending a lot.
fyi for clean lineart you could use the Pen tool (simulating the dip pen), brush is more like for coloring in this program. Better yet you have to try the vector layer, this is the only program with the easiest vector manipulation in the middle of working on something (I often change my lineart after base coloring). I don't even have to draw the vector straight because I could always edit it later :D Not even photoshop, illustrator, or csp could match the ease of manipulating vector lineart especially for manga anime style illustration where one usually need clean sharp lines that's more complicated than cartoon style lines. This is why people sticks to SAI, especially the ones who have unstable hands like me.
Dont forget that to fix the blur if you have so, enter right clic properties on the shortcut or exe file, click the tab compatibility, change high DPI settings, and then select the box "override high dpi scaling behavior", its on the bottom.
Love your surface pro reviews. I just bought one to use as a laptop. I had given up on being able to actually use a tablet for art. But the surface pro is awesome for art. I've been really loving sketch able. Anyways, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the review. It was very helpful. PaintTool SAI was absolutely one of the best programs for anime/manga style artwork. I've always used Paint Tool Sai for years and it worked perfectly with my XP-Pen Artist 12 Pro Display drawing tablet . The lines are beautiful and crisp with the pen and brush tools, while the blur and watercolor tools are to die for. It is lightweight compared to photoshop and i do personally like the pen brush pressure of Paint tool sai compared to PS. The brush pressure is much natural to me without tinkering lots of of its settings. The simple UI of it will make the work faster like you can see all the settings you need on the side and lastly you can intergrate PSD files that you have drawn and edit in photoshop.
The download is 2.5 megabytes. That's it. That's everything you need. And it will run on a potato if it had to. I managed to run Sai on ancient Core 2 Duos, on Atoms, on modern high-performance gaming PCs, in laptops, in windows tablets, on a point-of-sale machine(!), and in all of them it performed damn near identically. You can create some very polished work if you dial in your preferences. When even an Android freemium app takes more resources, this is a miracle of software optimization that somehow survives in an era of bloatware. Even Paint Tool Sai 2 with vector editing and text support still fits on two 1.44MB floppy disks. What is this techno wizardy.
I used SAI for about five years and I really do love it, but I feel like now that Manga Studio/CSP has gotten even better than it already was, and that now a really nice free alternative to CSP exists (Fire Alpaca/Medibang), there's no real need to use SAI anymore. I still love it though and I'll keep using it for painting backgrounds, but that'll probably be it.
Paint Tool Sai is also work best for mouse user. Lineart layer is the game changing for mouse user like me. It's like drawing on adobe stuff but not confusing. Even I am still suprise how any sofware cannot do this simple feature.
sorry for commenting on an old video, but people are still using this software, and I felt like this info will help someone. first, the driver you mentioned costs a lot, and may not be required for good pressure sensitivity. I'm using the program with my wacom tablet and it works great as far as I can tell. secondly, I was surprised you said there are better windows programs. this is almost 2019 and still, most free drawing programs do not even have layers /transparent background /custom brushes/ any form of pressure sensitivity. comparing them to Paint tool SAI is ridiculous. they're all like some kind of MS Paint v.2.0 the only (other) free program I'd recommend is Krita. it's like a cheaper Photoshop, but sadly it will not give you the same results with a tablet. it doesn't have pressure sensitivity control and line stabilizer like SAI, in fact the pressure level barely makes a difference in opacity/brush size, unless you use a huge brush size (which won't work for line art/small details). note I'm using SAI 1.25 and there's already a version 2, which I haven't tried.
i disabled the physical touch screen on my surface in windows device manager but left the pen digitizer enabled. this eliminates all the touch screen false positives and also GREATLY improves the performance of the MS surface tablets.
FOR THE RECORD, Paint tool SAI has been developed and maintained by a single (1) programmer. Who also became very unmotivated to develop this further, because people pirated this program like crazy.

For me it's really easy to work with this specific app or whatever you want to call it, and I'm guessing that's because I grew up with it. I tried the iPad Pro + Apple Pencil + ProCreate in the Apple store, and was turned off of it because I am a SAI user, and was simply not satisfied with ProCreate's blending capability. You mention in this video that there are other, bigger programs you like that have this blending capability. Can I ask which you recommend?
I'm pretty sure if you download something from softsonic, it won't have a virus. I have so many programs from there, and I tried to download it from there, but it just didn't work for some reason. Also I pretty sure windows defender would have gone off as that works relatively well

Honestly PTS is my go to program only because my computer is so old. Photoshop and all those fancy programs don't run, they just crash the whole computer. They should've had a more updated version for you to use with text options and such from what I heard? But yeah, that's just me. I love your art though, man. 👍 Good review.
Just watched a part of an extremely interesting video, actually a streaming session recorded, and well, the tool is waaaaaaaaaaaaay more than it seems. What I suggested might be more than doable for this specific software. Is.. .practically having everything tied to key shortcuts, even things you would never have so in PS or the like. (well, with ps you can do or emulate whatever, am not a hater, love ps) . This confirms my idea that with that x-mouse app you would make things like trigger wheel zoom (by asigning space key and dunno what other) , rotate canvas, etc, etc, etc. I do not have time to watch that looong video, as, yay, have a lot of work waiting to be done :D,(wasn't so till very recently) I will continue later on, watching that one, is one of the best I have seen lately in general about drawing apps here. Not putting the url here, as I don't know if is allowed or if is it polite. But.. just discovered, you can have a vector layer in Sai, make it the inking layer, it'll make that as internal vectors, not too crowded in nodes, and you can hit optimize it later with a button or shortcut, and/or individually edit the nodes. Seems quite comfy, a bit more than just using vector inks tools in other raster based softwares, which imo is not a great experience. And just hitting d key to clean the canvas sounds nice to me. (and like in PS, you can temporarily hide all palletes by hitting tab)

Clip Studio Paint (formally Manga Studio) is an all in one artist application that is just fantastic. I'm positive that you'll love it given your style. Hope you do a review of that soon.
I don't think its been under active development for several years. Ditto the website. It looks like the same website I went to 5 years ago. Its' nice. But, I prefer MyPaint or Krita.

Personally, I use Manga Studio (Clip Studio). It has a free trial and the standard version is currently around 35-50 bucks. Although, if you are just starting out then Medibang is a free program for drawing comics so maybe give that a try first (Brad Colbow has reviewed the ipad version). ^-^

Even if it's a fine program that amount of barriers you have to avoid and go through just to get the thing doesn't make it worth it for me, and that it has small issues yet still costs money while there are free programs that don't.
I really really prefer ibis paint x all the brushes cost money but you can watch a ad and all of them are free my profile picture is drawn with the app
The first place I downloaded it had a virus (I think it was a softsonic site). The link I put in the description works. Still it's a good idea to can it with virus scan software before you open it.
+Turkidot In some parts it is out of sync, one of the takes got wonky. I tried to cover some of it up by putting a lot of speed drawing in it but there are several cuts where it's off.

For the resolution, right click the SAI exe and go to the Compatibility tab, Display DPI scaling.

sai1 had linework layer (vector editing) too! but yes Koji is crazy at optimizing lol

turn off "touch screen" when you drawing it will helps a lot. And like you sad using another keyboard for drawing/editing are much more easier.

you should try radialmenu (its free) for mapping hardware buttons and have a radial menu available just like on a wacom tablet.
If you find Painttool SAI too old, you should give Paintstorm studio a try, now It's only $19.

The website says the program requires 512MB free space space on the disk.

Does he know you can like pan in and out and zoom around like you're painting if you use the mouse also if you have a touch screen computer that's even more better because all you have to do is like zoom in and out your fingers and it's actually really good I've never really had the app like purchased it be on like a 30-day free trial because I don't actually have money like that

I don't think its been under active development for several years. Ditto the website. It looks like the same website I went to 5 years ago. Its' nice. But, I prefer MyPaint or Krita.
the main problem I have with paint tool sai is how pixel like it is, no matter what tool I use it looks very pixel like.

+Amochi013 I got the mega pack which has a boatload of brushes in it. There are a couple ink brushes in there I like but my main one lately is called "smooth fine inking"

Yep. I haven't tested it specifically with an intros but I know a lot of folks use it with Wacom's tablets.
Personally, I use Manga Studio (Clip Studio). It has a free trial and the standard version is currently around 35-50 bucks. Although, if you are just starting out then Medibang is a free program for drawing comics so maybe give that a try first (Brad Colbow has reviewed the ipad version). ^-^

Even if it's a fine program that amount of barriers you have to avoid and go through just to get the thing doesn't make it worth it for me, and that it has small issues yet still costs money while there are free programs that don't.

The first place I downloaded it had a virus (I think it was a softsonic site). The link I put in the description works. Still it's a good idea to can it with virus scan software before you open it.

+Turkidot In some parts it is out of sync, one of the takes got wonky. I tried to cover some of it up by putting a lot of speed drawing in it but there are several cuts where it's off.
+Turkidot It might be. I did not notice, though, and I really hate it when it happens, I'm over sensitive to that... So, maybe the mass of people wont detect it. If you notice it, most surely there is. Sometimes is just the own pc being laggy, but surely is not the case.
After watchin the rest of the video, this review focuses much more on the surface pro and not the program itself. Please retitle the video.
