Phoenix's Lilac Umbrella is the must-have prosthetic tool for people getting frustrated by the Shichimen Warriors or the Headless. Now if you'll excuse me gentlemen...time to end my nightmares
I didn't have a problem with Shichimen, as soon as I knew to use confetti then they were easy, but the Shichimen in Fountainhead would just randomly insta kill me with terror without attacking. Pretty sure he's a bit bugged
@@saltycat243 i did take the anti air deadblow. But he just uses his balls to smack me and pussy away but no jump :(. No need for confetti, tho. I use the projected force. He just annoyed me a lot
You missed a few things about the umbrella. - For the Phoenix Umbrella deflecting deals vitality damage with the fire element(a VERY small amount). This means successfully deflecting a red-eyes instantly puts them into their stagger. - Projected force has 3 charge levels when blocking ranged attacks, indicated by increasingly loud sound cues and increasing amounts of steam. The higher the charge level the more damage it will do. - in addition to blocking thrust attacks like you mentioned. Attacks that normally chip your health even if guarded, such as those done by Isshin, Emma and Issin's Elite, will not deal damage when using the Umbrella. It doesn't matter if you deflect or not, simply hiding behind the umbrella will block the damage.
@Cody Ingram At 2:59 he is talking about how the activated attack of the lilac Umbrella will deal chip damage to enemies even if they block or parry it, not how blocking or parrying with the Phoenix umbrella does fire damage.
some addition, parrying with the umbrella will not stagger you from attack that otherwise will stagger you even when perfectly parried like the corrupted monk jump attack or Owl (father) rush sword sweep and the monkey power blow. Those kind of attack usually leave huge opening after the movement so it's a great to counter them. Really useful against big boss type enemy with super armor and wide swing attack like the Drunkard/glutton fatso miniboss, owl, and both monk fight.
are you talking about pheonix lilac or suzaku lotus? Deflecting red eyes with suzaku lotus will put them into stagger yes. I didn't check about dealing fire damage on deflect, but if what you said is true, then suppose i use infinite emblem mod, i can do vitality kill with just deflecting?
Suzaku's Lotus Umbrella is OP against the Demon of Hatred. It makes the fiery attacks much more manageable and projected force does significant damage.
I found it good against the long range multi -fireball attack because dodging that is too sketchy and can almost one shot on ng+ With bell and no charm
Good overview of the umbrella. Only thing I'd add is the interaction with kuro's charm: If you play without it, the umbrella does NOT block chip damage from enemy attacks, only if you get hit during its parry frames, like the normal block. Does make it quite a bit weaker unfortunately, especially VS demon of hatred.
So basically its the best prosthetic in the game. As I thought. The umbrella has become integral to my overall playstyle. I always have that and shuriken equipped. The third is often swapped for something when I need it.
@@WastePlace yeah it's umbrella firecrackers and shuriken (phantom kunai is my favorite), but my favorite one(cuz it carried me throughout the game) is mist raven. Specially the fire one with contact medicine.
@@vaskopoh9512 how do we best use the phantom kunai? Shuriken is my most used weapon and I always gets its upgrades the first, but sen throw and phantom kunai are the only mods I cant fully utilze effectively
imo this is *far* from the best prosthetic in the game. in terms of defensive options, yes, this is easily the best prosthetic - but other tools focus more heavily on overwhelming aggression, something that is generally incentivized by Sekiro's combat system. I think this tool is overrated - it's definitely good, but there are better prosthetics out there.
The umbrella is sneaky amazing. There are several bosses and mini-bosses that it makes quite a bit easier, even up to NG+7. I never use it to turtle, but the fire and terror resistance combined with the R1 attack after a block makes it a great tool.
An interesting additional tidbit is that the flames, which flash when activating the fire-based umbrella stun red eyed enemies (like the chained ogre) the same way the flame vent does, at a third of the cost.
I had no clue that using projected force dispelled weapon buffs. This pissed me off to no end when fighting Headless as I could never figure out why my confetti got dispelled in 10 seconds.
Suzaku's Lotus Umbrella will make the Red Eyed Ashina Elite guy you can fight near the end of the game cower everytime you deflect him with. Any Umbrella will block Snake Eyes' grab, as well as the Headless Ape's scream.

You missed 2 most important use of of the umbrella i think. 1. It blocks all piercing attacks. Including attacks done from sheathed stance (those are piercing by default according to one of the loading screens). 2. Some attacks like demon of hatreds stomp, owls chasing slice etc will stagger/knock you back even if you deflect them with sword(the animation where sekiro stabs the ground with sword to stop knockback). If you deflect them with umbrella you dont get staggered or knocked back.
Another useful thing is that when you use it to parry a particularly strong attack, like the last hit of Corrupted Monk's 5-hit spin combo, you suffer no lag and can immediately counter attack. It's my go to prosthetic for that reason.
It’s funny because I’m trying to Platinum the game and have done numerous playthroughs but have NEVER used this tool. I need to learn how. I have all the necessary stuff for it as I have all upgrades. I’m happy I watched this and thanks for the video. Gonna learn how to use this!

It also allows you to deflect grabs, very useful for the Shura end bosses! Oh and you get deflect frames immedietely when you press r2, despite the long misleading animation
The Phoenix Lilac Umbrella not only protect against terror, but "magic" damage in general. That means you can deflect attacks like Lady Butterfly's butterfiles and Mortal Blade attacks without taking the chip damage normally taken.

I had very little idea how to use the umbrella apparently. After playing the game 8 times and now on my 9th playthrough... I had no idea you could send a projectile force thing back at an enemy. I did notice that the Shinobi Fang arm smoked sometimes when equipping the umbrella, but I thought it was just the cool animation/visual effect for the prosthetic tool... I feel like I'm the tool now.

Umbrella is my favorite Tool easily S tier . Phoenix's Lilac Umbrella against all apparitions , works great on Monk as well , blocks lots of annoying range attacks like Monkey Scream or Monk Terror poison (?) and then lets you counter attack with Projected Force... Its sooo good
The loaded umbrella will also protect against grab attacks if the grab is initiated by a thrust. So for example against the Snake Eyes mini-bosses, they do their grab by thrusting their gunspear at you, hooking you, pulling you close, and then shooting. The loaded umbrella will block the thrust attack and this will prevent you from getting pulled, and the umbrella will stop the follow up shot. I think against the snake-eyes mini-bosses there's actually nothing they can do to do damage to you through the umbrella's defense. Highly recommended if you're having trouble with the mini-boss at the gun-fort.
Lilac + projected force ve Shichimen Warrior = instant win. As long as he doesnt hit you with his weapon directly the spirit balls won't even build posture dmg. For some reason the first time I fought him with it I got to one shot him into the first deathblow aftr taking spell hits for a while.
Fam I never knew projected force sent a projectile back I thought it was the cross slash alone. Thank you for that. Almost done with the first run and never knew that wow thanks.
Uh...not sure if it was mentioned here yet but the umbrella is also effective against attacks that would normally stagger you even if parried. So if you've memorized the moveset you can get a free projected force on the enemy while they're recovering or keep yourself close for other options.
I always thought the smoking umbrella was just a cosmetic effect of the later umbrellas, such as the ones that block fire and terror attacks. Good to know!
Your guides are amazing. I'm on NG+ and making cool videos of using these tools. I have used Suzuki's Umbrella in conjunction with Oil to inflict burn damage. You can douse yourself with Contact Medicine (to Poison yourself) and project Poison Status on enemy's. I actually just uploaded a video of using Great Feather Mist Raven against Lone Shadow Masanga. I am actually going to do a video of ALL tools against Lone Shadow Masanga. He is the perfect sparring partner. I use cloud restore to refight him. Thanks again!!! Btw, I gave you a SUB with bell on. I think the umbrella is the most OP prosthetic in the game. It can be used defensively and offensively through its counterattack. Not to mention it can deflect attacks and can render snakes eye's grab useless.

the selling point of umbrellas are that it negates heavy knock back attacks (owl’s shuriken chasing slice, isshin 360 charge slash) and the best part is that it can block grab attacks which can keep the flow of combat going
If you use haven't beat the demon of hatred, use the flame version of the umbrella to block the fire balls the demon throws at you and summons to burn your wolf burn
After some testing i have some information that the video doesnt tell: 1: deflecting with the umbrella does more posture damage to the enemy than deflecting with the katana (i have all ashina skills and it was tested om ng+7 attack power 99) 2: the spin you do when you press l1 after opening the umbrella has more deflection frames than when you open it 3: attacking with projected force using the standard and the magnet upgrade doesnt remove the buff you have in your sword (any flame vent buff, any divine abduction buff and any bestowal ninjutsu and all of them have a nice effect when you do the cross attack with the umbrella)
Not sure if it was really explained well but to be able to use the projected force with the umbrella ella ella you DO NOT have to hit the left bumper to spin it , the enemies projectiles hitting it while your holding it above your head will work and also VERY important to know that you can stack the projected force cuz there are 3 levels it can go too ....every 3 enemy projectiles that hit it you will see a very bright flash and i believe the color of the smoke changes slightly !! But it tops out at level 3 so thats 9 hits you should take to absolutely maximize the damage you do when you fling that bitch back at someone
also worth noting. Projected Force overrides weapons buffs. So when you do use divine confetti and then projected force, the divine confetti buff will stop
Blocks the butterflies coming at you when Lady Butterfly snaps her finger causing the ghosts to disappear. But you will have to run away after to regain posture.
You forgot to mention that after using the slicing attack and pressing R1, you buff your weapon with either Divine Confetti buff or fire buff if you have a proper skill.
do the terror / fire umbrellas still block attacks of that type under path of hardships? like, if you block a fireball from demon of hatred in path of hardships with the fire umbrella, will it stop all damage or will some damage go through?
Does a perfectly timed R2 deflection on taking the umbrella out deal as much (or more) posture damage to the enemy as a perfectly timed L1 spin deflection after the umbrella is already active do?
There's is a thing mentioned in the video and some people miss it the slash attack can not activate until you ubtain the projective force in the skill tree
It is one of my favorites in terms of appeal. But I don't know, the fireworks have been the only thing that has consistently helped me beat the final boss's (excluding the optional end-game demon of hatred boss). Eventually they become like battering rams, their power and aggression become to much to deal with by only turtling around and you won't ever have enough spirit emblems to deflect every single attack, so you will eventually run out.. at which point you might be in the later phases of the boss.
@@interconnectiveOM I can say exactly the same for the Umbrella, it blocked all the attacks that gave me problem, including his long swipe and wild outbursts, the fire umbrella does wonders for the demon of hatred too, but the katana is and will always be the main thing, no tool will replace it
@@interconnectiveOM well you just fight normally and then when the situation is getting serious THEN you start busting out the umbrella and typically at that point it will win you the fight

I mistakenly attacked the black hat badger (or whatever his name is) and now he lights up as an enemy *every time* a approach him. I am well into the game and still unable to obtain the umbrella from the now hostile badger. Anyone have any suggestions?

Great tool with the Projected force skill. Phoniex one makes fights against headless and the shaman real easy.

I know its an old vid but you forgot to mention that umbrella can deflect grab attacks. Yes this includes ogre's wwe grabs too!
So thats why gunfort felt like a drive by strapping for me.

Suzakus lotus can light enemies on fire, maybe that's just since the patch or maybe you didn't test on weak enough enemies, but it's worked for me
This one turns fights with Ashina Elites and the Armored Warrior into a piece of cake.
The Lilac Version also trivializes any Schichimen Warrior and Headless fights too. You don't even need Divine Confetti with it.

So for example against the Snake Eyes mini-bosses, they do their grab by thrusting their gunspear at you, hooking you, pulling you close, and then shooting. The loaded umbrella will block the thrust attack and this will prevent you from getting pulled, and the umbrella will stop the follow up shot. I think against the snake-eyes mini-bosses there's actually nothing they can do to do damage to you through the umbrella's defense. Highly recommended if you're having trouble with the mini-boss at the gun-fort.

Lilac + projected force ve Shichimen Warrior = instant win.
As long as he doesnt hit you with his weapon directly the spirit balls won't even build posture dmg. For some reason the first time I fought him with it I got to one shot him into the first deathblow aftr taking spell hits for a while.
Fam I never knew projected force sent a projectile back I thought it was the cross slash alone. Thank you for that. Almost done with the first run and never knew that wow thanks.

Uh...not sure if it was mentioned here yet but the umbrella is also effective against attacks that would normally stagger you even if parried. So if you've memorized the moveset you can get a free projected force on the enemy while they're recovering or keep yourself close for other options.

I always thought the smoking umbrella was just a cosmetic effect of the later umbrellas, such as the ones that block fire and terror attacks. Good to know!
Your guides are amazing. I'm on NG+ and making cool videos of using these tools. I have used Suzuki's Umbrella in conjunction with Oil to inflict burn damage. You can douse yourself with Contact Medicine (to Poison yourself) and project Poison Status on enemy's. I actually just uploaded a video of using Great Feather Mist Raven against Lone Shadow Masanga. I am actually going to do a video of ALL tools against Lone Shadow Masanga. He is the perfect sparring partner. I use cloud restore to refight him. Thanks again!!! Btw, I gave you a SUB with bell on. I think the umbrella is the most OP prosthetic in the game. It can be used defensively and offensively through its counterattack. Not to mention it can deflect attacks and can render snakes eye's grab useless.
Minor note: It can also block the Snake Eyes Perilous Grab Attack 😁

You can also deflect that grab attack regularly, which I found pretty surprising.

the selling point of umbrellas are that it negates heavy knock back attacks (owl’s shuriken chasing slice, isshin 360 charge slash) and the best part is that it can block grab attacks which can keep the flow of combat going

3:21 it does burn the enemy but the buildup is very low
If you use haven't beat the demon of hatred, use the flame version of the umbrella to block the fire balls the demon throws at you and summons to burn your wolf burn
After some testing i have some information that the video doesnt tell:
1: deflecting with the umbrella does more posture damage to the enemy than deflecting with the katana (i have all ashina skills and it was tested om ng+7 attack power 99)
2: the spin you do when you press l1 after opening the umbrella has more deflection frames than when you open it
3: attacking with projected force using the standard and the magnet upgrade doesnt remove the buff you have in your sword (any flame vent buff, any divine abduction buff and any bestowal ninjutsu and all of them have a nice effect when you do the cross attack with the umbrella)

Not sure if it was really explained well but to be able to use the projected force with the umbrella ella ella you DO NOT have to hit the left bumper to spin it , the enemies projectiles hitting it while your holding it above your head will work and also VERY important to know that you can stack the projected force cuz there are 3 levels it can go too ....every 3 enemy projectiles that hit it you will see a very bright flash and i believe the color of the smoke changes slightly !! But it tops out at level 3 so thats 9 hits you should take to absolutely maximize the damage you do when you fling that bitch back at someone

also worth noting. Projected Force overrides weapons buffs. So when you do use divine confetti and then projected force, the divine confetti buff will stop

Blocks the butterflies coming at you when Lady Butterfly snaps her finger causing the ghosts to disappear. But you will have to run away after to regain posture.
You forgot to mention that after using the slicing attack and pressing R1, you buff your weapon with either Divine Confetti buff or fire buff if you have a proper skill.

There's is a thing mentioned in the video and some people miss it the slash attack can not activate until you ubtain the projective force in the skill tree
For me the one's before purple stood well against headless ape's screech. I think purple is strogest with projectiles like the headless ones.

It is one of my favorites in terms of appeal.
But I don't know, the fireworks have been the only thing that has consistently helped me beat the final boss's (excluding the optional end-game demon of hatred boss). Eventually they become like battering rams, their power and aggression become to much to deal with by only turtling around and you won't ever have enough spirit emblems to deflect every single attack, so you will eventually run out.. at which point you might be in the later phases of the boss.
@@interconnectiveOM I can say exactly the same for the Umbrella, it blocked all the attacks that gave me problem, including his long swipe and wild outbursts, the fire umbrella does wonders for the demon of hatred too, but the katana is and will always be the main thing, no tool will replace it

I mistakenly attacked the black hat badger (or whatever his name is) and now he lights up as an enemy *every time* a approach him. I am well into the game and still unable to obtain the umbrella from the now hostile badger. Anyone have any suggestions?

You can set enemy on fire with the final form, just not in one hit.
The umbrella also blocks grabs, makes the chained Oger a joke
It can also block and parry grab attacks, so it is good against ogre, emma and the guardian ape
