    I'm also deaf. Completely in one ear and 25% in the other I had an operation 3 years ago now. And the smallest noises are amazing to hear at first, like birds tweeting, dogs barking on the street. Cars etc

      Sofie Cottam I couldn't imagine what it must have been like to not hear music. You could probably feel it, but I love music...what was it like hearing music? Different from what you imagined? You could hear a bit though, couldn't you? You said 25% in one...

      I could hear, but u couldn't hear as much as I should of done. All throughout school I'd complain I didn't know what I was doing in class because I couldn't hear the teacher, teachers told my mum to take me to have a hearing test done and she did every 6 months, they kept saying I had glue ear. I fell back on writing, reading, spelling and listening . when I had my op I came outside the hospital and I could hear a dog barking and the sound of leaves on the trees I was so excited! So basicly I couldn't hear things from a distance. But I could up close. But with the hearing aid I've got everything is louder but echoey. And I can't tell where a sound is coming from like my left or right so I have to be careful when crossing roads etc. I found out I was deaf when one day I couldn't stop tilting my head to one side and it felt like I had a huge bubble in my ear, so I booked myself a hospital appointment to get checked I found out there I was 100% deaf in my right ear, and 25% in my left. I was furious that they hadn't found it sooner. I did my GCSEs at school (before my op) and got low grades, when I went to collage (after my op) I taught myself to read write and spell (my spellings still not perfect) I took my GCSEs again and got high grades, its changed my life. ☺ xxx

      +Ryan Sinclair calm down, all new treatments and technologies start out expensive. Give it some time and the prices will go down. You can't want the most top-notch technology to be released ultra cheap otherwise no company would waste millions developing them. Either that, or the government should subside them ... we all know that is not gonna happen.

      A lot of the Deaf community feel like this is betrayal, and should not be allowed because it implies that there was something wrong with her that needed to be fixed. If my leg was blown off, you can be 100% sure that I would do everything I can to walk again, by getting a prostetic leg.. And same thing with this deaf thing.. It is her right to get her hearing fixed, and to be prosecuted by the exact people who should be supporting her the most (deaf community) is just shitty to the max.PS. My wife had this surgery (free) in the UK and they screwed it up. Her hearing actually got worse. She had the second ear done in the US and recovered all her hearing on that side. This same doctor repaired the botched UK surgery and she recovered 60-70% in the first ear. Very expensive but you get what you pay for.

      TooleyPeter And that just sucks, it's not fair to have to pay so much. I have to admit, you must've had a pretty shitty doctor and that's very unfortunate, but every time I've been on the NHS it's been just fine.

      And does this justify bills for IVs for over 180$ per IV? Or hospitalbills for an appendectomy that are so high that people could buy a new middleclass car if not two? I don't really think so! The american health-system is just as f***ed up as their educational system (don't get me started on that one!).

    • @stevekong388
      @stevekong388 8 лет назад +4

      TheSztyko Yes it does justify it. Progress in medical sciences benefits humanity and free healthcare just gives a moment of relief. Also, U.S's advancment in medicine is used in the countries with free healthcare to better effectively treat people and save more people.

    Hearing is a necessity, not a cosmetic addition. She shouldn't have to pay 30k per ear to hear. Healthcare system is fucked up.

    • @shersmk90
      @shersmk90 8 лет назад

      +Mich Alice Well she might could get the less expensive hearing aids to hear something. Can't say if that would give this woman the same amount of hearing, or she was already using hearing aids before the operation. But most hearing aids aren't payed by any insurence either. Just a fact: the CI (cochlear implant) doesn't make you a hearing person. Just a hard of hearing person and everything you could here before, without these things, you are losing that if your CI is not in your ear (when a sleep, taking a shower of going for a swim.) Then your a fully deaf..
      Back to this woman: I hope see get what she is expecting to hear in time, that she will be happy with it and enjoyed it, and I'm glad Ellen could help her family out. Also I hope she doesn't need a new implant whitin 15 years, which it normaly does.

    Implants to make a deaf person hear for the first time. We live in sci-fi today.
    Just imagine experiencing music for the first time. It must be a nearly religious experience, suddenly discovering an entirely new sense that you could never percieve before. Makes you wonder what kind of senses we might aquire in the future thanks to technology.

    • @aquariuskitty21
      @aquariuskitty21 8 лет назад +2

      +Baleur actually no i am deaf and a cochlear would NOT make me hear because its technology but see i was born with out ear nerves okay?? u need the actual nerves to be hooked up to the cochlear which is damaged during birth like german measles or menginitis or whatever disease so i wait for the day THEY CAN ACTUALLY invent a implant that grows nerves ?? so anyone got a nerve to donate ?? lol that is one of the science mysteries they have not yet evolved so long i probably wont live to see that science breakthrough sighhhhhhh and for the rest of u canadian insurance will NOT cover ear implant u have to pay on your own because that is a birth defect not after being born maybe the very rich can afford that kind of insurance but no i know i tried and no insurance companies do not think cochlear is necessary at all so they only do after a car accident or etc so no

    • @144heartx
      @144heartx 8 лет назад +4

      +LegenDairy Gamers I can clearly make sense of everything he said, so i do not know what the problem here is (there are grammatical errors, yet still completely understandable). If you are being legitimate then i will inform you about what he was trying to say.
      He was explaining that he is deaf, and that the mechanism that the girl in the video had used (cochlear implant) only works if you contain the nerves in your ear that allow you to hear. The girl possessed these nerves, though she was missing the hair in your ear that transmits the sound, therefore the cochlear implant worked for her. He is missing those nerves entirely because he was born without them, therefore that mechanism does not work for him. That is why he said that he is waiting for the day that they can implant something that grows nerves (though i'm highly skeptical that is actually possible, plausible, or even logically accurate). In addition, he also said that he probably won't be around if that were to ever happen in the future. Furthermore, he was also explaining how insurance does not cover these types of things, because it is a birth defect (in his case and in the girl in the video's case), rather than something that had occurred after birth, therefore the insurance company is not liable for something like this.

      Even then.. how the fuck is OP even wrong? OP never said anything about the implants being a foolproof way for the deaf to hear. He just simply said that we are living in the future. Basically that things like this were just a mere dream years and years ago.

      It's clear to me. The dislikers aren't disliking this woman's success and the truly emotional aspect of the story - that's universal, and it brought tears to my eyes. I don't want to take anything away from that joy (and I certainly didn't "dislike" this video), but I realized that there is a difference between the tears I had watching her original first-time-hearing video and this one. The first one was true empathy and happiness for another person's joy. The tears for this one are from another sort of empathy that can only exist in our society, where we all work to make money, save for security, and mostly fall in the middle where it is a daily concern. We dream of winning the lottery; we dream of being recipients of some miraculous kindness to alleviate our financial burdens. I'm sure that many of the dislikers of this video are responding to the U.S. healthcare system and how in other countries her family would not need to sacrifice their security for a procedure, hence setting up the situation where Ellen can come in and save the day. I love Ellen. I love the U.S., but I'm just trying to respond thoughtfully to your question.

    My brother went to a school for deaf people for a few months because he'd just had an ear operation. He was the only one there who could actually hear though. And he really loved it there even though he couldn't even speak sign language but he still could communicate with the other kids because kids don't really need a language to understand each other. I think it's a beautiful thing that making people hear again is possible in this day and age.

      poor word choice on my behalf. i meant that deaf people are more likely to be in dangerous situations that a hearing person wouldn't "normally" experience. just think of driving, or crossing the street, or fire alarms. i know there are resources to help in those kinds of situations but i don't see why this wouldn't be a covered procedure considering how hearing is really important in some of these situations.

    • @ajdrewello
      @ajdrewello 9 лет назад +8

      xyOnThePrecipice21 On the contrary, most statistics show that deaf/Deaf (capital "D" for those who identify with Deaf Culture) individuals experience less harm in "dangerous situations" than hearing individuals do. Many of these studies can be found in the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, and on the website for Gallaudet University. When driving, for example, deaf/Deaf individuals experience far less accidents than their hearing counterparts because they are more likely to be visually oriented and observe their surroundings. Ambulances, police cars, fire trucks, etc. and their flashing lights can be seen in side and rear view mirrors. Additionally, deaf/Deaf does not necessarily mean fully deaf. There is a spectrum of hearing loss. For many who identify as culturally Deaf, cochlear implants pose a threat to their identity. They are proud to be deaf/Deaf, to have a language (ASL) unify them, to have a rich cultural history where they fight back against the mainstream media and hearing culture thinking they're disabled or less than average, etc. That's why this is seen as an elective procedure. I recommend RUclips-ing videos of Deaf individuals and their opinions on cochlear implants. I apologize for the long, winded response! Just an educational moment. Source: I graduated with an MA in General Anthropology and did my thesis on Deaf identity, am an NIC-Advanced certified ASL interpreter and was born deaf, grew up Deaf and received a cochlear at age 11. I only use it for work and prefer to sign/go about my day without it.

      thanks for educating me on the subject i really appreciate it actually. its good to learn things. but i still think it should be a procedure that is covered. everyone deserves the chance to be able to hear. it just scares me a lot to think of someone who cannot hear very well. imagining what that might be like is very odd for me. i hope to learn ASL in the future. I am studying Communications and i think that learning sign language will be the icing on that cake. I've noticed that those who communicate through ASL are so much more expressive, its really an amazing language.

    • @ajdrewello
      @ajdrewello 9 лет назад +4

      xyOnThePrecipice21 It's hard to imagine a life other than our own in many cases. A lot of my Deaf friends shudder at the idea of "becoming hearing" because they feel like they'd lose their identity. It's a crazy thought for most people! I think learning ASL would be great for you. Deaf people are extremely kind and welcoming to anyone who attempts to learn their language, so I'm sure you'd have a great time. I recommend making use of all the RUclips videos of ASL basics and finding a community college or university ASL course. And hang out with some Deaf people. You'll learn a lot. Best of luck! :)

      Yes, there are specialised tutors who teach the deaf how to understand how to communicate. Just like they teach them to understand what people are saying, they teach them to talk. It's beautiful.

      When you learn ASL sentences are parafrazed but through tutors they also learn normal grammar so it's almost like learning two languages. Ex- My name is Kristen. ASL- MY NAME K-R-I-S-T-E-N

    • @Tinyman12
      @Tinyman12 10 лет назад +2

      Kristen Pike
      HI: Actually Sign Language is another Language jut like German and Spanish or Italian or another foreign Language. I am learning ASL myself and also I deal with the deaf people that are teaching me and also They have accepted me which is unusual since the Deaf Community does not accept anyone from the hearing community.

    • @johnd1063
      @johnd1063 10 лет назад +5

      Kristen Pike It's not paraphrasing, ASL it's a totally distinct language with its own set of grammar rules and idiosyncrasies. Some people (usually the hearing who know how to sign) will also sign in regular, English grammar... usually referred to as "(American) English Sign Language" as opposed to "American Sign Language." What you're referring to as paraphrasing is usually just correct ASL grammar. For example, a simple English sentence like "The boy threw the ball" is actually signed "BOY THREW BALL" in ASL.

      Ellen: is all this really loud right now?
      Sarah: yeah, amazingly yeah.
      Ellen: yeah cause i could imagine that suddenly the smallest thing must be really loud
      S: yes
      E: First of all it was the most most moving thing I've ever seen (talks about the video that went viral), so to eperience that.... And this is just a week old
      S: yes ma'am, 8 days.
      E: And so, explain what is is exactly you were born with
      S: my parents' DNA together caused for the hair in my middle ear not to form, and those hairs are what transmit the sounwaves to your brain
      E: wow, it's just that simple, not having the hair in your ears.... incredible
      S:yes
      E: so i don't understand how clearly you're speaking, usually there's a speach impediment because you don't hear clearly how words are pronounced. How do you speak so clearly?
      S: i get asked that all the time. Really, i just credit it to deaf ed school, speech therapy and I'm a big talker, i like to talk a lot, and i love to read anything i can get my hands on. I have a passion for english and grammer and always exeled in those subjects oddly enough
      E: by the way if you wanna read a book this is a good one ( shows her book)
      S: i started it
      E: how old are your children?
      S: my oldest will be 4 in a montha and my younges is 20 months
      E: and that i bet was something you've wanted to listen to, and your husband. What other sounds did you imagine, and think about. Like music even?
      S: hearing music clearly, the rain, thunder, birds... i mean, things that normal people wouldn't think about hearing... my husband snore, or yourself laughing
      E: speaking of your husband, Sloan hi! (Turns to husband) This is incredible. But now she knows you snore, you got away with it for so long.
      Sloan: yeah but i think she only experienced it one time and turned the machine off
      E: (to guest) you propably love hearing him snore... but it's gonna wear off
      S: oh it wore of the first night
      E: and then this is Sloan's mother ( points at the audience) Larry. Andu think larry has to be the best mother in law I've ever heard of. The procedure caused 30000 dollars per ear, so you've had one, so you couldn't aford it, and Larry gave you the money.
      Larry: yes i did. Sarah is the best daughter in law in the world. When this device became available... I'm not walthy at all...
      E:yes i was gonna say, you cashed in your retirement to do this
      Larry: i cashed in a small retirement fund that i had
      Ellen: (to guest) and your insurance doesn't cover this either, that's why u had to borrow the money.
      I don't think that anyone should stuggle like this financially with something this important, so we have a little gift for you.
      Our friends at Envoy medical corporation which is actually the company that suplied you the original implant, will not olny give you the next one for free, but they're gonna give you 30000 dollars to pay you back.

      ***** I agree with you, this is what I meant when I said "the taking over of deaf people IN SOCIETY". I don't want deaf people to be marginalized BECAUSE OF the ignorance of some hearing people. that's why I want on one side to educate them, and on the other side, to help deaf kids who were born in a hearing environment to communicate. If you think that only hearing people have to make efforts, then you're saying speech therapy is useless :p but maybe this is not what you were saying.

      There's a reason why, deaf people aren't disabled. Ellen shows the deaf community like they don't want to be deaf, which is wrong! Ever heard of deaf pride? I'm sorry but I think it's 100% wrong to push cochlear implants on the deaf. Honestly I hate this... Like cool it was what she wanted but this isn't something that should be put on television.

    • @usernameuser5573
      @usernameuser5573 8 лет назад +41

      ShedYourSkin 1. Some deaf people are curious about what it's like to hear, considering it's a completely new sensation that you experience constantly
      2. Don't presume to speak for the entire deaf community
      3. It's always going to be optional. If you don't want the procedure, don't get it. Just because you're too poor to afford it doesn't mean you have the right to bitterly discourage others from getting it.

    • @shersmk90
      @shersmk90 8 лет назад +3

      +UsernameUser But they never put a proud deaf person who did something good or extraordinary in the show. The only one who got in was Marlee Matling, the actress. Only when they got the CI, and want the procedure, somehow they get in...
      So your are right whit the point you made, partly. Because it also something that many deaf (children) not choose for, there hearing parents doing it for them so they 'fixed' something what doesn't need to be fixed and doesn't give always what has been promised. Most parents are thinking at first that it makes their deaf child an hearing child, which isn't the case: it makes the child hard of hearing. I'm not sure if that is a better thing that being totally deaf. (I know more dutch proud deafs than dutch proud hoh persons.)

      Hannibal Lector punctuation is your friend, not your foe.
      Jacob also had a true point. American healthcare is terrible, because either you pay for it or you have to suffer.
      I wouldn't want to live in a country where people are getting bankrupt of a chronic disease and ruin their whole families life. Not to speak of an education system that also needs you spend thousands of dollar per year (college, university etc).
      With all the many things going wrong in this country and nothing turns to good account, USA is going down anyway and i doubt they can turn the tide, so it would be useless to start a discussion about it.

    As someone who received a medical procedure, that changed my life and I wouldn't have been able to get if I lived in the us because of the cost of it, I felt extremely emotional when the mother explained why she gave her money. That woman deserves all the love in the world for doing that - if all people we're like that towards each other, the world would be an amazing place.

    Hello Ellen! My name is Isabella, and I am 11 years old. I am also deaf, and also use a Cochlear Implant. I was born deaf, but my mom made me hear when I had about 3 months of age. Now I can hear everything, and say everything. I speak Portuguese and English fluently, and am learning German at school. I was born in Brazil and lived there until I was 3 years old, then moved to the United States and stayed there for about 8 years. Now I just moved to Germany and I am going to stay here for 2 years, then I will go back to the United States. I had the Cochlear Implant surgery when I had 4 years of age. Before I was 4, I used just a hearing aid. It was pretty tough, but with a lot of work, I was able to communicate. By the way, when I go to Disney World in Florida, I always go to that ride that is of energy and you were in it. I really enjoyed it. And I think you are really funny!!!
