yes but perhaps they could have used a much smaller footprint looking inside I see ways this could have been slightly larger than the speaker and not much more.
Indeed. I’ve compared to other similar sized BT speakers that are supposed to be stereo and they don’t sound as good as this one. I also have a second Flex and do stereo pairing. When I go back to just the one speaker it still sounds quite nice and spacious.
@@Sergei__vthat's where Bose excel. Tiny speakers, perfectly tuned to get a sound frequency/volume level closely matched to much larger enclosures. I auditioned a surround sound system with 3" cube satellites & the soundspace was unbelievable for tiny boxes, little larger than engagement ring boxes. Almost invisible. But oh boy the $$$ I passed...
Those screws are so long because the case is plastic. All the vibrations will eventually wear out the plastic that holds the speaker in place, and the screws help make sure it'll be a long time before things start resonating.
More likely for waterproofing, but I agree. The screws holding the driver into the box are actually 4 of 10 screws holding the entire front of the box onto the speaker. Some would say it’s overbuilt (JBL doesn’t do this) but I actually think it’s a sign that they want their speaker to last a while and hold up to heavy use including outdoors. JBL gets around this by using rounded boxes instead, and I do think their product is well built too. I’ve not handled the new Beats Pill or Sony ULT Field 1 in real life yet, but it would be interesting to see how well built they are. Not fond of Beats’ continued use of thin metal grills: they are a thing of the past, from the time of JBL’s Flip/Charge 1 and 2, both generations of Bose Soundlink Mini, the Sony SRS-X2/3/XB2/3/XB20/30/40, and other era specific speakers like the Jambox. At that Time, UE pioneered the fabric design most companies use today. Beats should either be using the woven fabric that JBL, Sony, UE use, or the durable thick metal grills of the current Bose stuff.
i love this thing. I only got it last night but I am absolutely stunned by how good it sounds. The cool thing is is that bose is located a couple towns over from me. So maybe my speaker was made there. That Bosch screwdriver is pretty cool.
Thanks for the tear-down, the rest of us would be highly reluctant to do this... 😱 Despite being mono, from everything I've researched, the Flex sounds even better than my Bose Soundlink mini 1, so Bose have done a superb job for also keeping the size, form factor and cost in a comparable range. That full range driver in the Flex must have some real engineering chops in it.
Can someone answer for me - can you extend the Flex's runtime by connecting it to an external USB battery bank (ie. a typical 5,000 or 10,000mAh power pack?)
Awesome video! Brought mine to the beach, dropped out of my hand and fell into the sand, got some sand in the holes of the grill, got most of it out, but couldn’t figure why the sand didn’t come out of the holes in the lower part of the front grill. Now I know why, the double sided glue strip holding the grill to the housing continues about 2-3 rows of holes up, and sand will definitely stick to that. Not sure if it’s worth opening it up, it’s a small eye sore, but doesn’t have any effect of the sound itself (that I know of). Thanks for the tear down video !
the csr chip is the bluetooth chip, the other big chip on the left seems to be the amplifier, and the chip next to the battery seems to be a charging/bms chip
One of my favorite things to do with these little Bluetooth speakers: set the driver on the table upside down and see how much it jumps around. Unlike a large driver, the lightweight and powerful neodymium magnet on these seems to actually provide some thrust! They’re also extremely overbuilt drivers that are quite hard to damage this way. I remember doing this on my original 1st generation JBL charge back in the day and laughing. This seems engineered way better than that one was. Same with the modern JBL Charge 5. Both are way better than most speakers were back then. Honestly with the Flex, Bose is finally back to the standards they set with the original Bose Soundlink mini. Flex really is the only Bose product that’s worth the price IMO. Really makes you realize how far ahead of its time the original mini from a decade ago was.

It is really impressive of Bose to make a mono speaker which as both clarity and punchy upper Bass that sounds deep. Even JBL couldn't do something like that with the Charge 4 and flip 5.

Excellent teardown - every minute step covered in an easy to understand tutorial. However, I have no intension in tearing down my Flexes, very interesting video though. By the way, 2 of these speakers, linked in stereo sound even more awesome. Great product.
@@shaktastik Yes, when 2 flexes are paired in stereo mode the result is a very noticeable upgrade. I used to have a pair of Soundcore Motion+ which, on paper, could be linked to perform in stereo. It worked but had a regular tendency to lose the link for about 1 second between speakers, which made them unacceptable for my intended usage. So I sold those and bought the flexes. Only bought them a few weeks ago. Not disappointed so far.
it depends how portable your setup must be. I would recommend the teufel boomster (similar price to 2x Bose flex.) minirig also has some interesting combinations, where you can buy 2 speakers and 1 subwoofer for example and have a portable system. I think the bose flex is one of the best really small bluetooth speakers! (I didn`t test 2 Bose Flex)

At the end I finally understand how passive radiator works. AHA, as soon as the screw runs tight, the passive radiator works again. Impressive!
Bose has been quite decent at these little speakers and headphones for a while now. They combined their active EQ and small speaker devices from as far back as the 70's lol They also seem to hate using tweeters; it's full range drivers or paper cone tweeters. If you have a Bose product with a dome tweeter then it's a rarity lol

Hi. I was having a great experience with it but suddenly it keeps turning off whenever I try to play something a little loud. This had never happened before (it’s a little more than a year old). I think it is also not charging properly; once it turns off, it does not turn on unless I put it on charge again. Can somewhere tell me what is happening, and is there a way to repair it? I took it to the local authorised Bose store, and they said they can only replace it (and it’s not in warranty anymore). Please help!
People complaining about how simple and only one speaker it has without using it lol I bought and tested Flex, JBL Flip 6 and Sonos Roam. I returned them all except for Bose. Something about the well round full range speaker sound that others speakers are missing. At the end of the day, it is all about sounds, right? Haha
Long screws and soldered connections just ensure that nothing will ever come loose and vibrate. The thing is built like a tank. Something about its mono sound sounds off to me though. Sometimes, I'm not convinced I'm hearing the audio information from both combined recorded channels. People say they hear things in their music they never heard before...but if you take half of the music away, of course you'll notice what remains easier. Other than that though, I love my Flex! Very clean and thick sound! Fun video...thanks for showing us!
Curious what it would take to add a line-in for this speaker. I own one and sometimes miss being able to connect my old gear to it (like an old iPod). Can this be done based on what you saw when you opened it?
The sound quality difference when you reassembled everything was quite stunning. When playing with the passive radiator on it sounded amazing. Could you tell why it is so important?
Double passive radiators work as bass reflex vent but in a small cabinet. They reproduce low frequencies main driver can not deliver with much level. Besides that, main driver is prevented from playing on passive radiators frequency range. Main driver excursion is lowered and thus its behavior is vastly improved. The only downside is delay at low end. But for such small speakers, it is not a concern.
When the enclosure screws were tightened along with the driver screws the whole cabinet becomes sealed. The fart noise you heard prior is air escaping (air created by the speaker movement) so once sealed the passive radiators then begin to absorb the sound pressure waves, this causes them to radiate sound (ie etc like a speaker cone).

Does anyone know if the battery is replaceable ? I’ve been itching to get this but I have the Bose sound link mini and battery is a very easy replace on that.
How about the sound core motion plus? Can you also open that brand. Thanks

Que dispositivo ea el que uso para conectar bt con la bocina ????
Tengo uno con problemas de bluetooh, no me aparece en la lista de dispositivos bluetooh. Si enciende y dice listo para conectarse.
I have one with bluetooth problems, it doesn't appear in the list of bluetooh devices. If it turns on and says ready to connect.
Which ones the tweeter?
what would you suggest if the speaker is blowing air through the usb c port? like a lot and because of this the bass sounds horrible. if I cover the port it sounds perfect
If it's under warranty I would return it, if not and to seal the gap I suggest you open the speaker and use: LA TIM'S T7000 Glue, Black Super Adhesive
the usb c port soldered to the board and no seal at all, looks like its not so airtight.
I just bought this and I am very happy. Haven't tested the mic yet. Anyone can advise if the sound is clear when using it on calls? Also, where on earth is the mic located lol?
