Exciting! TUNING BEGINS Part 4 of VW MK2 16V ITB (CBR900RR Carbs)
Help us fund cancer research by buying a shirt 6ixthstage.big...
In this video I show you that I managed to adjust idle and get the wideband installed. My friend Slav helped me dial in base timing and I took the car on its first long drive to my friend Chris' house.
I also go over the AFR readings from that drive and on the highway, explaining what kind of tuning that will be done on the carbs. To summarize:
    Idle/Light cruise - I'm seeing a range of 13.5 to 14.5 (median being low 14s).
Actually seeing 15s on the highway. I don't think there's anything wrong with this but I plan to maybe fatten this to 13.5 in the peak of summer. Maybe end of June.
    Moderate throttle/Acceleration - I'm seeing a range of 9-11
Too rich. The stock carbs do not come with adjustable needles so I'm stuck here unless I get a kit from Dynojet but I think I will hold off until I swap to a bigger main jet.
WOT - I'm seeing a range of 15 climbing up to as bad as 19
Too lean. As a result I have been avoiding driving the car since until I get the bigger main jets installed.
I went with 190 jets from JETSRUS which will tell me plenty of which direction to go.
I hope to see close to 12.5
I also showed syncing the carbs using the Uni-Syn carburetor calibration tool.
Finally I show my makeshift pedal stop.

You'll find you need a lot more advance. I got a set of motorcycle sync gauges for syncing and checking vacuum. Vacuum is a great way to set your timing with carbs on these.
Ive got 185 mains that do alright.
Thanks for sharing though! Nice to see somebody else in it with me🤙

      • 2.0L 16V (formerly motronic from a Passat). Ignition is currently just a SAAB vac advance distributor I retro-fitted. Motronic doesn't have a knockbox and I'm not sure the ECU was good anyway.
      • R1 carbs. 32 pilots (runs a little rich in Winter. I think they're 1.5 turns out?Will probably downsize)185 mains.
Your CBR carbs are similar in design, both are mikuni CV carbs, but the CBR carbs are 39mm, the R1 is 42mm. So the jets will be slightly different between us, but still in the same ballpark. The stock 16V US spec was 40mm, so both are good candidates! As far as the ignition advance goes, if you ever notice that your too rich off throttle and in throttle, but otherwise your measurements are cool, might want to give your ignition more initial advance.

are you on any social media? I find I've dialed in idle (around 13s), cruise (14-15), WOT (13-14), but I still see the occasional 9s at low rpm when accelerating in local traffic (not highway). any ideas?
