    I'd love to see a video about harvesting, drying, soaking willow to prepare it for weaving. Thanks!

    Great video you have there! please make a video about preparing willow for weaving. Like do you put it in water before weaving and how many days? That would be great! Thank you!

    Thank you! I liked the the video, & subscribed to your channel. I have a bucket of willow starts that I gathered wild up here at 4000' elevation. I'm going to take them when I move back down to an elevation of approximately 200', and plant them by a river there. Do you think they will live, without the snow-dormancy?

    Great video, thanks! I'd like to harvest local willows to plant near my house. There are a few varieties that grow on my island and on the bigger island at higher elevations. Good to know that best planting time is from October to March. Curious if deer will eat the willow?

      Yes! Deer will eat willow, especially the growing tips. Good luck!

    Hi Brendan, I am really enjoying your videos and I've downloaded your ebook. I am in the south of Scotland and I've a stand of Osier Willow I planted in January 2019 and cut the first time in February 2020 to use for making a hedge which took really well. It's grown back really well! In your booklet you mentioned it wasn't good for finer weaving. Should I plant some of the other species or do you think it's worth having a go with the Osier?

    • @BigGreenArt
      @BigGreenArt  3 года назад

      Worth having a go if the rods are thin and flexible enough

    Hi Brendon, thanks great video....I’m planning on starting some willow beds, my location has -20 degree temps during the the winter months...do you know if planting now, November ( ground isn’t frozen yet ) is ok?

      Hi, Plant while your ground is not frozen, and hope for the best .In Ireland we don't get such severe temperatures.

    Thank you, Brendon, for this video it really helps me, I am in the UK and had no idea what I was doing at the time! I picked some willow from my local park to make some dreamcatchers and decided to put 3 of the leftover sticks onto a small patch of gravel by my lounge window, not knowing what I was doing I put them quite close together, and not sure what I was expecting other than not having to walk to the park every time I wanted to harvest willow for my dreamcatchers Lol, 2 years on and I have 3 healthy 20ft trees! OMG, now what? I also intended to have enough to start basket weaving, not that I have a clue how to do that either, then today I found you, amen to that! so how do I get the best out of what is now a huge tree? hope you can give me some guidance. Lesson learned about the planting part - a bit late for the 3 already planted but hey there is always room for improvement!. I am off to watch all your other vids now. Thanks again.

    I’ve got willow that I planted two years back. My plan is to coppice it and replant the coppiced rods this March when the ground thaws. Does this sound about right?

    • @BigGreenArt
      @BigGreenArt  6 лет назад

      Hi Joshua, yes that sounds good, give the new plants space between each of them, and plant through a groundcover if possible. Good on you!

    Hey, do you dig the ground underneath the black cover first? And get the grass out?

    • @BigGreenArt
      @BigGreenArt  Год назад

      No put on top of grass, spade in the edges, and the cover suppresses the grass

    Hi Brandon, I just found your channel and subscribed, really interested in your content. I've got a willow bed that I just recently coppiced for the first time, I was noticing that the fabric had really dug into the bark as the plants have grown thicker. Do you go back and remove the fabric after a certain length of time? I cut the fabric further away from the plants but I'm wondering if they are strong enough now that I can just remove it entirely.

    • @kathleenoharafarren2447
      @kathleenoharafarren2447 7 лет назад +1

      Hi, sounds like you could be using very strong woven groundcover, which is unforgiving. Cut around each plant as you did, I'm sure the willow will be strong enough to stand on its own if you want to remove it, I keep the groundcover on as long as possible, it's more cloth than plastic. Hope this helps. Brendan

    • @BigGreenArt

      Most types of willow grow long and slender rods, it's worth trying, some better than others.

    If i grew my own willow in my garden at home for the purpose of harvesting it for weaving, would the roots damage anything nearby, and would it be invasive at all?

    • @BigGreenArt
      @BigGreenArt  3 года назад

      Willow won't spread like bamboo does via its rhyzomes, but the thin roots spread out looking for water and food, so dont plant near a veggie garden. No structural damage worries! Good luck!

    • @BigGreenArt

      I use groundcover which is like a cloth material, which lets ground breathe, allows for trees to grow, and stays on the ground, eventually covered with leaf litter

    Hi, I live in Wales and am thinking about planting willow in a field that is fairly wet in places. Please could you tell me what types of Willow would I be able to plant and the best places to get them from. Thank you for sharing.

    • @AndrewRenaux

      There is a good chance a native willow grows near you along the rivers and streams. You can go for a walk to find one you like and select some cuttings to plant. Google 'willow key' to help identify.

      I bought 17 different 7" cuttings from ebay and so far 15 of them have grown leaves. I tripped over two of them and knocked off the sprig on each of them and one was Salix Purpurea, unfortunately. Salix Triandra however has leaves on it. I layered a hedge a couple of years ago and the willow has sprouted lots of wands that I have cut into sections and they are growing well. I think they will be more suitable as fuel.

    How long does it take for the starters to become big enough to weave?

    • @BigGreenArt
      @BigGreenArt  7 лет назад +4

      Normally the rods from the first year are short and branchy, but from the second or third year you should be finding rods of decent quality to weave.
