  • Building a very small rocket mass heater out of scraps in my garage so that I can keep doing projects when it is below freezing. I've wanted to make one of these mass heaters for a while, but now I have to because it is too cold to do other stuff.

    Please install a carbon monoxide detector in your garage when using this. Just so when something should fail you know about it before it is to late. In Germany there was a case where a group of teenagers died because of a faulty oven in a Garage that filled the entire place with unedtectable carbon monoxide.

      Same thing happened at my old High School, some teenagers went to check on a gas generator that wasn't working properly (they were shop or auto body students or something so it made sense to let them learn) and they were too late to get them out, they suffocated in the shed.

    I feel your pain. I have no garage either so I have to build stuff in my garden. Not only does it limit my builds, but in the UK that means cold and rain and too dark to film most of the time. You do incredibly well to turn out interesting content at the rate you do for a one man outfit. Looking forward to see this project and your design. Stay toasty

    I love this idea! Can't wait to see how this works out. I'm planning to build a rocket stove for outdoor heating. Using electricity to heat stuff isn't wasteful. It can be the most efficient option since resistive heating is 100% efficient. I recognise the issue when things are burnt to produce that electricity, in which case that process is around 30% efficient. The solution: stop burning stuff; use solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, wave, hydroelectric, or one of the other great non burning options to generate your electricity.

    • @Leo99929
      @Leo99929 5 лет назад

      Your propane heater isn't burning up all the oxygen if it's still running or you're still conscious. Normal is ~20% oxygen, and at 9% you'd probably be unconscious. It's more likely that the Carbon dioxide and monoxide from the heater are causing issues. 5% CO2 and you'll have noticed it. 0.01% carbon monoxide and you would likely start feeling the effects. Ironically the solution is to ventilate the room, which would work against all that heating of the room you've been doing.
      Insulate your workshop. Get yourself a CO alarm and preferably a CO2/ O2 depletion alarm. Better yet use an oil filled electric radiator, I use one on my 300ft² workshop and it's barely on. Or at least have the intake and exhaust external to your workshop with the heat exchanger internal. Then you have none of the air pollution issues with all of the heating.
      I want to keep watching your videos because you make cool stuff, so please look after yourself.

    So, you trying to build a version of an old tiled stove. Search them, they functioned roughly like your describing. Usually they didnt have the drum for rapid heating, thought. But they were built standing up and had huge amounts of mass to store the heat.

    • @jairusofall

      BetrayerDave I already do that. It helps after the concrete is slightly warmed but it is too hard to get enough heat into it. I’m out there filming so I have to turn the heater and fan off because they make too much noise so I don’t have the time to put enough heat out. But yes that is necessary! Good thinking!

    Electric heaters aren't that inefficient at the end they're basically perfectly efficienct so all you have in efficiency loss is the 40 loss at the powerplant and another 10 to 20 transmission. What about inefficiency of fuel distribution especially at the small scale to your local distributor using small tanks and then you driving there to grab it. NVM you're starting fires lol c'mon man at this point electric heaters are a ton better for the environment. You could've run it with some eBay solar panels too even during the winter.
