Razor has become a legend in the game. He was interviewed on radio the other week. They asked him, "What is the best sledge you've ever received as an umpire?" He answered; "Without doubt, its got to be 'The dingo took the wrong Chamberlain.' It came from a fan in the crowd." Aussies will understand....😆
THANK YOU ! I've pointed out several times how ironic it is that the Umpires are sponsored by OPSM ( Optical suppliers ) but nobody seems to appreciate how funny that is . Until you Rob , Thank you , finally someone gets it. Who could hate Razor Ray ? seems petty , he's a great umpire with a sense of humour to boot , why would anyone hate him ?
As someone who umpired lower levels for 20 years, I love watching Razor. So good to see someone with a personality rather than a robot. Those incidents of low 5 etc are extremely rare but in the context of that incident, I don't think anyone had a problem. The whistles in footy are always finger whistles as you call them. It is a fast game requiring accurate, frequent and immediate whistles, I couldn't imagine trying to use any other type esp a lanyard type. They used to be an ACME Thunderer and they probably still are. It is a distinctive sound that possibly only footy uses. It is very good at piercing through the noise of 100,000 people at the G.
4:06 that’s not a questioning inflection! It kinda rises across “dow_” but then there’s like a ghost syllable that drops in pitch! “Dow-wn” But for real, I love this clip, the kindergarten teacher persona comes out of nowhere
Seen Razor Ray interviewed on a show called '' OPEN MIKE '' with a guy called Mike Sheenan and he is a real good bloke , Rob if the check out the series of '' open mike ' check out a interview with a player called Mark Jackson that Mike Sheenan did with i wont spoil the surprise but trust me it is well worth digging it out if you can find it .
In 1999 an AFL umpire (Peter Carey) marked a football in a match, between Fremantle and St Kilda at Subiaco oval Western Australia. Fair Bloody Dinkum everyone was stunned.
yea i think its a must in all sports to thank the referee. They are taking their time and commitment to help teams play. Without a ref there is no game :)
He's not real popular. Seems to be pretty impressed with himself, but a friend of mine's son played cricket with him in Canberra, and thought he was a pretty good bloke. IMO umpires shouldn't have nicknames. If an umpire isn't noticed, he's doing a very good job.
The biggest reason why people (including me) aren't a fan of Razor is because he has a habit of making the game he is officiating about himself. Generally speaking if I know the name of an umpire he or she is generally sub-standard. The best umpires don't get noticed.
so as a football referee i dont want to be noticed however, if a team are playing up then a ref has to step up and get noticed to control the game. I love refs having personalities as it shows they are only human.
Ray's a ripper! Those who hate it are in the school that 'umpires should be seen and not heard' but Ray is commanding and I admire him. He'd probably be more popular if he wore Pokemon/Winnie the Pooh shirts though I reckon 😉
Haha glad someone enjoyed my t-shirt. I love it when refs have a personality. It's shows they are human and at the end of the day they are apart of the game.
Razor Ray Chamberlain is 5 foot nothing and he carries on like he is 7 foot 8, but he is a character of our game and really wants to make sure the players follow the rules to the letter, he doesn't like my team (Collingwood) but then again anybody who doesn't barrack for Collingwood hates us, well they can shit in their shoes, Love your vids.....
I "remember" him doing something I hated but I'm not sure what it was...so I probably should let it go. I'm sure it was something against Port or Crows.
When you said, “That sounds like a question” a few people have mentioned that when we make a statement. It didn’t sound like a question to me, I’m an Aussie, it must be the inflection in our Aussie Accent.
@@RobReacts1 Ah yes, Adam Hill, I’ve seen him do that one lol. The way he accentuates our accent as others hear it, it does sound like a question lol. Just ignore our inflections at the end of a sentence and you’ll be fine haha. I didn’t, of course even know we had that sound until recently. What about your accent lol, all in good fun, my grandparents were all first generation Aussie from UK, England Ireland and Scotland. You need to watch this video Rob, not for a video reaction but just to gain an understanding about umpiring Aussie Rules. This footy show is called the Front Bar which is on Australian TV every Thursday night and it's hosted by two comedians and a sports journalist who take the mickey out anyone and everyone involved in footy. On this episode they interview umpire Hayden Kennedy who umpired 495 AFL games including 5 AFL grand finals. You will probably enjoy the whole episode but his interview starts at 16min 50sec mark. ruclips.net/video/Gu_PtkmRKzw/видео.html
His a great man that does his job like a professional should and makes mistakes like them all but a but owns them and love's a bit of banter as well 👍🇭🇲❤️ and they do get a 5k fine for swearing at them by the AFL
A good umpire shouldn't be noticed. AFL made a big mistake giving umpires numbers. It means fans worry about WHICH umpire made a bad decision, and umpires bringing personality exacerbates the problem IMHO. Incidentally, last year he was dropped during the finals series - media speculated that it was because he's no good at centre bounces, but social media was full of rejoicing from the fans (and naturally a lot of sarcasm from sports jokers like Titus O'Reilly) [Google: "Razor Ray dropped for finals"]
NB: You talk about specsavers (which did sponsor AFL at one stage, possibly umpires), but the OPSM advertising on the back of their shirts in some of those clips is an optometrist/optician as well.
See i agree and disagree. As refs we love a game when we dont have to be seen. But players give us no choice sometimes due to bad behaviour or stupid play. And actually having a personality shows the ref is human and is apart of the game
Aw man about 4:25 where you say 'don't make it question' just absolutely shows me you don't understand Aussies at all mate lmao........ that wasn't a question - 'that was a very friendly veiled threat of violence' lmao.......'you need to calm down' is pretty much the equivalent of 'it's on if you open your mouth again' :D
It's just a joke. The Aussies have been bantering with me do it's just banter back. I know it's not a question but we're Aussies raise the pitch at the end of sentences makes it sound like a question.
@@RobReacts1 he never gives obvious free kicks to my team , he repeatedly gives non existent frees to their opponents and he does it in such a way that stops all momentum for my side , surely you understand by now this game is a game of momentum , he prevents my team getting it by giving dodgy frees against them and never rewards them when they earn decisions thus allowing their opponents to maintain momentum . he had them for 5 games a few seasons ago , they lost all 5 , he gave their opponents 59 free kicks and them 4 in those 5 games . so yeah if you understand the game then you can blame him .
I think its nice for them to have a personality. At the end of the day they are apart of the game and they should be seen to be human and can make mistakes. I dont want to see a robot.

Your right about the refs having personalities. I think it's a good thing. I have two finger whistles. A Fox40 and ACME 😊
Take it with pride the harder an Aussie sledges you, the more they love you .

I think the umpires. In my daughter local footy I make a point of thanking them.

I don't disagree. I think referees should be seen as human though as that we sometimes makes mistake. Like happens in one of the clips
Greg Williams got a 9 week suspension for no more than that tap on the backside by Rioli.
It still burns 24 years later.
