Yeah, the changes sure have been divisive! I don't mind too much, but plenty of others have strong attachments to the original characters.

I love the character visuals of the older version more.... they are all so sweet. The new one’s modernized. That’s just my opinion though... having played the new one for 3 hrs straight.
i think the new one looks fine but i prefer the visuals of the old one... my problem with the new one is that some areas look cheap (character portraits)

@@bibbybhoygames6381 I think you're right! He does look a bit younger. I don't think he looks as grumpy either. I was surprised to look at his hair in the older game and realize that he was a blonde. I never noticed that before.
I didn't recognize him at first either, because I thought he used to have orange hair...but I think that was back in HM64 when he was related to Ann and her dad. Then in HMDS his hair was brown in his portrait.
I'd say out of everyone, Karen looks the "worst." I miss her redesign from HM Island of Happiness. Actually, Cliff, Popuri, and Doctor all looked a bit better in Island of Happiness, tbh.

I really enjoyed seeing this comparison! It brought back many memories and I didn’t realise how attached to all of the characters I was... it’s good to see how similar they’ve kept things. ☺️

Character redesign and name changes still plague the game.
I have learned more about life from this game than going to school back then. The Switch version is just a nostalgia gem for people who grew up with the GBA version
I had a crush on karen back then haha. To bad the character portraits arnt as good as a long time ago but I still do enjoy most of the new character designs.

those memories ... i played FoMT when i was like 13 or so and i didn't even noticed that manna was in the game. i learned english through this game.
i liked the old colored grass more and you had way more foragables laying around. they are way more visible. i missed some flowers in the spring because they pretty much looked like the background -.-
also, why did they changed the names so heavily? okay, change the Y to IE but the sprites have mostly new names.
i still love the remake because it brings back memories and it feels like i was there before (which i technically was).

I hate a lot of the changes but the biggest one to me that makes me not able to justify buying the game is the change to the clock/time. It's always been 10 seconds in real life = 10 minutes in the game. Now it's changed to 5 seconds = 10 minutes. Way too fast.
Still much better than the clock from Harvest Moon 64
The game is faster paced then the old one so I think it's an adjustment

I think the thing they took out that bugs me the most is the ability to improvise when cooking. I don't like the requirement to HAVE a recipe first.
I really like most of the character redesigns, but Carter and Zack, oof, what did they do to you?
On the other hand, Huang, Manna and Rick had serious glow-ups.

Maybe it's just the nostalgia in me but the old game art was so charming. I do think it can be changed in a remake but still be endearing in its own way. Not this one though
Tbf, most of the new character designs look more fitting with their personality than the old ones, tho some of the old ones are arguably more unique and 'funky'. Most of the designs and portraits in HM BtN and HM FoMT are reused assets from HM 64 characters with different writing, that's why some of them are kinda off if you have played HM 64 before. Like why Jeff looks so suave and neat for a timid grocery owner? That's because he was originally a slick bakery master back in HM 64.
That's one of my first thoughts as well. I grew up with BTN and a lot of families looked really off (i.e. a lot of people didn't look much like their parents or siblings) and had designs that didn't fit their character and jobs too well so at first glance I think they used this as a chance to make that less of a thing pretty well.
I also believe that, and I played HM 64 first than FOMT and BTN, and it was really hard to get used to the changes they had in these games, and I also didn't think that their design didn't match With their functions than in the 64 it worked perfectly, these new looks of them in the remake, at least fixed some things and left them with more "face" than they were to be, But I confess that I still love the old looks more, LoL

Ill take the original game anyday, looks muchmore pleasing and fun, but thatsd just me I have abig fan of the pixel kind of graphics, I much prefer that type of asthetic for games.
I'm honestly glad they took the dog noise out when you press B to exit something because every time I heard that I felt so sad
Going through the final week for the game's is incredibly painful but I'm so happy all of us can re-experience this again!

I wish this wasn't $60 CAD. I'm sure its good and I really do want to play this game again but this effort is not worth what they're asking for. It shoud be at least $20 cheaper.
Yeah, it's retailing for AU$79 here, which is on the pricey side. Definitely worth picking up during a sale later on.

I can’t believe that people are mad at these redesigns. I blame nostalgia because they’re all fantastic and unique and varied in my opinion. Everything is a huge improvement. The only thing I kind of wish was the same was the Harvest Goddess. I like both, but the hair of the original was cooler.
The aesthetic falls in line with the DS games which I think are great. But people gonna be on one about pixel art. Honestly sometimes I love it but for this game the update feels more like home to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
sometimes a classic just can’t be touched no matter how dated. They coulda made these graphics NBA 2K level and as a 27 year old purist I’ll take the Harvest Moon all day every day. I consider SoS for the newer generation so they can bask in the lore but it’s won’t be the same vs playing the original Harvest Moon when it dropped

the only likable change here is Manna.
My girl Elli/Elly is still is lovely as ever. I'm glad to see they didn't butcher her. The hair is a little bit off, but it doesn't ruin the character.
I missed her big doe eyes tho 😭 she looked waay adorable in the og.
I wished they went with a mordenized pixel look then 3D
There's so much more character in the older games, new one seems like it had been cleanly processed.
I have ways to play the original. I have a GBA Flash Cart and an actual GBA (and DS Lite). I have an emulator handheld. And I even have Retroarch on my Xbox Series S. I saw the remake pop up on Xbox, but it always seemed a little pricey considering I have multiple ways to play the original. Not that it was super expensive, just, more money than I really *needed* to spend just for a game I can already play. Saying that though, I managed to get a copy of the remake for $4, and I gotta say, I'm really enjoying it. It's not a MASSIVE upgrade from the original, I would have loved a zoomed out camera to be honest. But what it does add, is pretty nice. It overall just feels a bit better to play the remake, compared to the original.
The biggest complaint for me, is that some of the remake looks cheaply made and tossed together, if that makes sense. Like, some of it feels super basic and simple. If you're gonna make a whole remake of something, why not take the time to make it properly? Take the time to really give the ENTIRE game a nice polish.
Also, another minor complaint for me, is like someone else said. The time moves a little too quick in the remake. I'm so used to games like Stardew Valley nowadays, that having the time move THAT quick, is kind of annoying. I have to rush a bit to actually get things done AND make it to other stuff like the shops. It forces me to pick and choose what I do a bit more than I'd like. I can't tend to my farm, do a bit of shopping, break some rocks in the mine, and do some foraging.....all on the same day. I have to pick one or two things, and just write the others off for the next day. Which, in some sense, makes actual sense. You probably wouldn't do ALL of that in real life either. But it's a video game, I want to be allowed to. Especially when you pretty much HAVE to do the farming stuff every day. That only leaves time for one other thing, assuming your farm isn't massive.
On the other side of the coin. I think the remake benefits greatly from the updated controls. One problem I always had with the earlier Harvest Moon games, was the controls. How everything used the same few buttons for different things. It always felt weird to me, and was hard to get used to. The newer game puts more things, spread out across more buttons. So it's way easier and quicker to access what you need.
My heart ache with memories
I played the old version when it came out and maybe I'm just too nostalgic to the old graphic style (am old lol) but far more a fan of the old school look. Even the way the dialogue writes? The content is similar, but it seems less charming? not really a fan of some of the character redesigns..some of the bachelors look so...plain now? The reactions were always one of my favorite parts of harvest moon versions and loved how they had a lot of life in them. Either way have a lot of love for FOMT so it's nice to see it redone.
Only one that I approve of is rick 😆 turned into a hunk 😌
Man. The Nostalgia, I just got rich in the old game in just 2 years in game time. I got so bored that I changed my fence into gold lumbers and made the town's folk hate me so much that I'm laughing everyday I wake up in Winter. Earned so much Gold that I already hit the highest value and I don't know what to do with it, bought all the seeds that the Supermarket has to offer, went to Merchant Won and bought all of his stuff. Watched my animals died of old age and make the younger ones pregnant with the pregnancy potion. Have my marriage fail and restore it back again, made all of my animals produce Gold items. Then, I've reached Year 50 and got the mountain cottage.
What else... Oh, chase my dog with a Mythical Hammer just for fun LOL.
Just kidding, I didn't.
I'd love it if they would also remake harvest moon tree of tranquility and animal parade!

Bought the remastered version yesterday cause I was curious. Played more Story of Seasons games than Harvest Moon. I wanted to see the comparison and honestly I like the characters but that might be just what I'm used to. But to see people shit on the remaster so much kinda makes me regret my decision..

some of the new characters especially the non bachelore / bachelorette were VERY bad compared to the old one
even Popuri looks a bit odd, which was the girl i choose on the old FoMT

This is my opinion.
I'm glad they remade the game, but the new character art looks like they hired a 15-year-old off of DeviantArt who can't, for the life of him, figure out why his art doesn't look like his favourite anime.
Some of them aren't bad, but others look completely different.
That's a pass for me, if they ported it straight over I'd be down but I'm not a fan of remaking old games with these smooth souless models
I don't know if I'm just bitter because I don't have switch...but i like the original one. Because original one has a vibe of anime...the bew one is kinda American cartoons type of graphics...and i just love how simple it is.
I don't like that you can't throw everything, and can't jump. I don't know if jumping was possible in the original but you could do it in grand bazaar and tale of two towns.... And of course the time passes tooooo fast

As for the bachelorettes, i prefer the old ones, except for Anne. I like Ran's design
They toned down the ost of the new one. But I'm happy that they didn't change any major component of the game
Ive played both games and is a fan of the old and new but for me personally i preferred the new one because it has a fresher in take when it comes to the designs and yeah you dont have to pressure yourself with the rivals and all other hard stuff that used to be way back. :-) and they pretty much matched the characters design based on their age which i find it more appropriate. HG could have been prettier but still enjoyed the game.
I much prefer the original version. Idk why. Pokémon also went from 2D pixel to 3D and I loved every single one of it. But I hated any new 3D version of the harvest moon/story of the season

My only frustration is that the REAL original was HM: Back to Nature. Sure, the name ultimately derived from the GBA version, but everything was originally from the PS game. Show it some love 😭

Of BtN, like more mine levels, more fish, more recipes, even the character, there's no greg, louis, kano in Fomt (and SoS), if you're saying BtN it's the original one, you're wrong, the snes/N64 ver, is the original. Cuz BtN is just a Expanded / upgaded ver. Of them. The reason SoS use Fomt instead of BtN cuz gba Fomt the the latest ver. Of the real harvest moon, They remake the latest ver
Objectively wrong. This is a remake of the FOMT game, not BTN. The heart events, dialogues, festivals, are all pretty much the same ones from FOMT, which is kind of a shame honestly. Back To Nature felt much more alive.

I remember reading somewhere that the localisation team wanted to stay as faithful to the original Japanese version as possible. I think it's a modern trend in games where people prefer localisations to stay true to the source material instead of adding a western twist on things?
Localization for games back in the day used to be different where they would try to make things fit the culture of the area more; so for example, you'd see a lot of Americanized names if you live in NA. I think the idea was to try to appeal to the audience more to make more sales, but in modern day, you don't have to as much.
@@MaoKittyMaoMao I think the Natsume and Marvelous divorce had something to do with it too. Honestly, as someone with no nostalgia for Harvest Moon FOMT, I really like the Remake and even prefer a lot of the older designs. Especially given the reason that the change was so they could match their occupations. Plus, the added bonus that you can marry anyone is great. That being said, this actually makes me look more forward to future Story of Seasons games.

The Remastered looks bland and dead... 😥 in the original, when certain characters got angry or sad, they did the cartoon-y expression of angry or sad, and all of that could fit into one cartridge or PSX cd which only has 800mb, was mind blowing. The remastered? Well look at that, so bland n boring, like a completely different game, yet somehow they wanted us the old fans think that it's the same, or even better, just because of the better graphics. Naaah... 🤣

The remake one better for child.
This game absolutely raised me so I feel like I have the authority to say this. I waited years and years for this remake and I really think the redesign looks colorless and lazy. Wow I’m underwhelmed. What a shame.
