That whining that you hear is from the traction motor blower. It is geared to the main generator. This blower pulls air in and directs it to a duct running under the engine compartment. this duct and has an outlet for each motor to get the cooling air across them. Anyway, this whine is very typical for EMD units at notch 7-8...maximum RPM's. You are right that it does sound a bit similar to dynamic brake fans. Rick
Awesome video! This reminds me of a favourite spot of mine in Wisconsin. A tunnel right at the crest of a very long grade. You can hear that whine seemingly for miles as the units pull the grade. At the east end of that tunnel, the smoke just BILLLOWS from those hard working units! Great place and great pix too! Thanks for this very well done video! ...and for the memories! Rick - USA
Yes, I do believe you are correct about the third unit...upon closer listening, it does indeed sound a bit "off". Really have to listen, but this is definately different from the traction motor blower. Yeah, if a blower made that kind of sound, I don't think I'd want to be too close to it. Thanks for pointing that out to me. And yes, the sound is awesome. I hope one day I can get some footage this good! ...and with this kind of sound quality. Rick
I guess I am not hearing that classic EMD 2 cycle thump in the audio at first, so I watched again, and I recognize my mistake, as evidence of the sound and the exhaust plumes. They are actually making very fine speed up this grade, and yes, the GE's are struggling where the EMD's are just cruising. The whine in this video is similiar to the dynamic whine of a heavy train being held against the steep downgrade i was able to witness at the east portal of Moffat tunnel last year. A treat indeed!
I have some on video but that was when I just started recording trains and it wasnt on the hill yet. Actually that might have been the last time I actually saw the pair. The best is 2 SOO SD60Ms pushing a NS coal train. That was before I started filming also.
Nice capture. Thanks for not taking this at a damn crossing (like almost all of the others). EMD music should not be disturbed by nagging horns and wigwags dinging 10 feet from the camera. Lets save that for the GE loco shots.
Awesome Video! One of my favorite video's and favorite spot' s to watch trains. Shame we don't see that much power come through here that often, mostly just intermodal now. How long ago was this video taken?
what i really love about this video is there is no horn...You can actually hear the engines as they thunder past you.

the best 2 minutes ad 30 seconds of sweet music to my ears

Awesome catch with CR SD60M #5536, CR SD60M #5565, and CR SD60 #6844 pulling a coal train with CR C30-7 #6555, CR C40-8W #6231, CR SD60 #6789, and CR C30-7 #6554 as DPUs! Classic Conrail action!
Thanks!! I've added this one to favorites. I have to agree with seabulls69 on getting the best sound away from crossing noise. 5 stars and well done!
Theres no sweeter sound the a train working up grade in run 8. Hearing four WC SD45s in run was incredible.
Great shot. Howling is an understatement. They're really working it.!
FULL DYNAMIC BRAKING!!! you don't get that very often. Excellent work!
Now that's awesome, that's how railraoding should be.
Just a question, don't you have videos of full trains?
Great now one of my favorites. These motors are really working.
The very first time I ran a train was in Conrail 5535 on an intermodal heading from Harrisburg to Kearney.
Thats one good run at the hill!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I gotta get my butt in gear and load up some mpre videos.
Dynamic braking? Those EMD's are on their knees in Notch 8. Something has to tow those GE's up the grade!
Lovely mechanical music, sounds like a V-20? No way, that is not dynamic braking, not at all. It’s a haywire turbo from the third unit

great video thanks for sharing it
DAMN Those EMDS are WORKING THEIR ASSES OFF SWEET
Wow, this is surprisingly relaxing until the volume picks up.

almost reminds me of SOO Lines SD60s. Only SOOs were louder lol
Great belching exhaust
Music to my ears!!:)

Do you have that on video, I would like to hear those babies?

Thank you, you like noise, check out my video of the best helpers I ever heard, pushing a coaltrain at Lilly, PA.
Talk about some EMD's pulling their guts out!!! ... MUSIC to my ears!!!
