Do you know why I fucking love Bastille? Because they make music in 3 different styles (sometimes combined): A little bit rock (this song, the silence, the draw), a little bit electronic music (bad_news and many others) and ballads (Oblivion,..). For sure there is also a lot of pop..

this is honestly amazing. i love how he quoted romeo and juliet - the fact that he has studied english language and literature is a big deal for me. i think this song really captures the soul of bastille which i thought lacked in the other new songs.

Everytime I hear this song I picture a man who's ordered to kill someone close to him. He keeps on refusing, but eventually he gives in and does it. But he blames himself everyday, he cries, he asks himself why he did it and doesn't recognizes himself anymore. He has turned into a person that he doesn't know and that he hates. He feels disgusted with himself and in whom he has become. The person who ordered him to kill wants him to do it again, but this time he's strong and refuses. But the person can't take a no for an answer, so he sends men to beat him as a punishment (real men always thinking with our fists, my turn to be the victim), and eventually he dies, knowing that he'll go to hell, but happy to finish his horrible life and to put an end to the agony and disgust he feels.

This is actually a reference to Romeo and Juliet it’s about Mercutio who dies in a duel that’s why the song starts out with “ a plague on both your houses” but I like what you came up with :)

Uh! Not exactly. Bastille started as a Solo project in 2008 which ended up in a band. The mixtape "Bastille VS Other People's Heartache" is produced by Dan only. The studio albums are indeed by the band.

I think this song is about Romeo in Romeo and Juliet.. It's about his thoughts when he sees Juliet dead and is about to take his life.
For starters, "a plague on both of your houses" was shouted from the bottom of mercutio's lungs before he died.
"This thing, it's a family affair" references the capulet and montague feud
"It's drawing out my weakness" - his weakness is that he would die for Juliet and not be caught up in the feud.
"Big boys don't cry" - Romeo cries when he sees Juliet's 'corpse'
"There was a time when a moment like this wouldn't ever cross my mind" - his thoughts on suicide, Juliet, etc. are crossing his mind, but when before he met her, they wouldn't.
"The sun will rise with my name on your lips" references Juliet waking after Romeo kisses her and poisons himself
"'Cause everything will change tonight" - the deaths of Romeo and Juliet end the feud between. Montague and Capulet
The next two verses are probably Romeos thoughts on his anger, stress, etc. from all the deaths that he and Juliet have ultimately caused.
"Real men, always thinkin with our fists" - a reference to the fights Romeo has gotten into with the Capulets
"My turn to be the victim" - Romeo poisons himself

They don't tend to sing on the stuff in the studio, just live. Shame really, it would be nice if they did get back-up singing parts in songs, but tbh they are known for their instrumental contribution to thr band...

No actually, my mom read it somewhere and it is pretty obvious. In Bad Blood (The album) all the back-up vocals is Dan's voice over again (Exception of Pompeii, it has the guys from To Kill a King on it). The only contribution the other guys made I'm pretty sure is in the backing track/beat to the songs. The only exception of this I have heard is the whole band's line in the Band Aid 30 song... :/
