How are you supposed to get a propane cigarette lighter though? unless hank doesn't mind zippo fluid. He did use a zippo in the smoking episode. The Joneses
2 years ago: Hank: Peggy, where are the matches? I need to light Bobby's birthday cake. Bobby: Dad, why don't we use Mr. Gribble's lighter? Hank: Because, son, butane is a bastard gas and I won't have your wish tainted.
That statement about butane could mean two things: A. Butane is a gas of illegitimate birth. or B. Butane is a horrible S.O.B. of a gas. Looks like Bobby implies it's B.

Some of those aren't gases at room temperature. They're all called alkanes, which is a string of carbon atoms with only hydrogen attached. The larger the molecule, the higher the boiling point. Propane is useful as it can be compressed and turn into a liquid at room temperature. This makes storage easier. Butane is similar, but has a higher boiling point again, so you don't need as much pressure to keep it as a liquid. That's why lighters and those little portable grills use butane. If they used propane, you'd have to have too thick of a container. By the time you get to pentane (C5H12), it's a liquid at room temperature and normal pressure. This means you couldn't rely on just opening a valve to let gas out. Smaller molecules, such as methane, can't easily be stored as liquids at room temperature, so you couldn't do tanks of it. Something with twenty carbons, icosane, is actually a waxy solid.
@@tbird-z1r Out of curiosity, what's the advantage of using propane over butane for all cooking appliances? Why don't most backdoor grills use it? Less efficient?
@@CrizzyEyes I'm no expert, but butane has more of a tendency to remain liquid. In fact, in climates colder than 0°C, you'd turn your bbq on and no butane would come out. Even at a more temperate climate, the pressure created from ambient heat wouldn't be enough to force the gas through the hosing and pipes of a BBQ at a fast enough flow rate. For a butane cigarette lighter, or mini camping stove, the gas needs to travel less to reach the heat source. But I'd guess a butane lighter won't work in a freezer if someone is holding it with gloves. Propane burns at a hotter maximum temperature too, but not sure if this is a deciding factor.
I work at a hardware store and this scene pops into my mind whenever somebody asks where the butane torches are.
You ask them politely yet firmly to leave?

I never forget that butane is a bastard gas. Thank you, Hank.
God said "Thou shall not use butane".
and "Thou shall use Propane and propane accessories"
Butane was born from unwed parents.
And streetball
Which is perfect for Joseph.

Or D. It’s used by bastards
I think this was a nod to Tom Anderson’s find for butane in Beavis and Butthead than Hank being a propane freak
damnit bobbeh
Tom Anderson: Say hwhat?
Apparently the voice actor for hank, Mike Judge, doesn't really care for Propane or Butane.

Hank knows butane is used for lighters and dabbing that’s why he calls it a bastard gas 😂

I find it ironic that Tom Anderson, who was originally supposed to be Hank's dad, uses butane. xD
