As a person who’s black myself (and over fifty), I can admit the term “the blacks” was in normal usage here in the States in the late twentieth century. So although outdated now, I can see why he said what he said without apology. It was something in current circulation at the time. I’m not sure when or why the term transitioned into something disreputable. We don’t know what to call ourselves anymore. How we refer to ourselves seems to always have been an uncomfortable subject, so it constantly shifts. What’s wrong today wasn’t wrong yesterday. I don’t know what else to say.
Loved your pause after "The Blacks." It sunk in. Yeeeeaaahhh...no? It just sounds disregarding and disrespectful. I was very curious about it, but will have to consider it with a grain of salt. Great review ❤️
Doesn't it tho? I don't like it when anyone is talked about that way. "the whites" "the asians" it just sounds very dismissive and like monolithic. Thank you for your comment and your kind words! Blessed be!
@@BronxWitch Chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile. You would think in this community, we could come together and appreciate what we all bring to the table. But Babaaay. Go where you are celebrated. From one beautiful black woman to another... I appreciate you for making this space for us my dear❤️ n you are welcome lol OK... I go now.
Thank you 🙏🏾 for this review….. I also like to write in the margins 😄…. 😊…. This is the most honest book review I have ever heard!!! And yes we all need to be held accountable for our resources.
Awsome objective review graceful.. I'm not a witch but I love and respect all witchy things ohhhhh my goodness what a way to describe people. The blacks.. Ohhhhh my goodness💜
Thank you Deborah! I love having non-witches check out my channel. It's definitely not a witch-only space. And I know right! a little cringe worthy, I must say! Thanks for watching! Blessed be!
Aly, that was a fantastic book review. I always love you honesty and truth. Would absolutely love to see more book reviews. Wondering if you've read anything on Marie Laveau. i'm trying to read "The Magic of Marie Laveau" by Denise Alvarado but way too many books on the go to keep up....lol. Also thanks for a reco you gave at the last book club meeting "Llewellyn's Witches Datebook". Just got it yesterday and also grabbed the Magical Almanac. Interesting little tidbit in each of them.
Thank you Betty. I haven't actually. Lilith Dorsey's book on Voodoo Queens is on the Book Club voted list and it's gotten good votes but hasn't won yet. I'm rooting for it cuz I definitely would love to give it a read and learn more. Yayy! Yea I really like Llewelyn's planners and calendars. Suuuper helpful. I'm glad you're liking them too!
Excellent book review! I have this one and although the information was good, I side eyed the labeling of "the blacks"! happy I wasn't the only one that caught that! Looking forward to more book reviews 🤗
I so love this review! The book sounds worthwhile, but you gotta wonder-what IS this guys story, huh? I love listening to your channel. You have this elegant way of being respectful and kind while still calling bullsh*t on less respectful points of view. So refreshing in this “cancel culture” online world to meet someone with the grace to hold that line.
Thank you! I really appreciate that Jenn. I totally think it's possible to call someone out without dismissing all of their other achievements and insights. And I'm glad that you feel me on that. And yes ... it's all very mysterious lol. Welcome to the community and thank you for watching! Blessed be!
there was another girl that mentioned racism, I didn't wanna call her out and be rude. I think there is a certain level of racism that is neccisarry and respectful , mostly just acknowledging race. I think people worry they will trust the wrong person. Generally I don't make racist jokes , it's just hard to laugh at mean stuff, but if i make a friend that can tolerate the occasional bad joke I'm loyal AF to my people, we are Americans , and therefore brothers and sisters , we in it together. It's good to be cautious, but I always try because I always appreciate good people. ❤ I'll shut up lol
Thanks for your comment Anthoney. I will say that I don't think acknowledging race and racism are the same thing, so I can't agree with you that racism is ever necessary or respectful. Racism is believing that one race is superior to another which isn't the same as acknowleding someone's racial difference. Perhaps you meant to say that acknowledging racial difference can be necessary and respectful and, if so, I agree. In regard to the book specifically, I don't think using the term "the blacks" is acknowledging the race of the people Mickaharic was referring to. I think saying "the blacks" is condescending and lumps all black people into one monolithic group which may not be an overtly racist statement, but certain smacks of erasure and racial minimization rather than acknowledgement. Just my take on it. And I'm happy to hear you don't make racist jokes lol. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Blessed be!
