  • During our September 2022 trip through Europe we had one delightful afternoon in Bavaria where we visited the storybook town of Mittenwald. We LOVED this beautiful city nestled near the Austrian alps. Come along with us as we tour the town, see the amazing paintings on the buildings, enjoy the lovely flowers, eat Mittenwalder food, and visit the lovely church.

I can read the sign on the house. 😁 It says. 'When this house was still a small hermitage in the middle of the forest, St Korbidian stayed here for a short rest. His gift, a magnificent staff, is still kept in the house today and is held in high esteem.' That's what my phone says anyway.

Stunning, Mittenwald surely is one of the most beautiful I've seen. I've now checked how far this is from home 874km. Do-able 🤣! The church, oh Dara just awesome. I'm watching with open mouth and held breath. I really don't mind it took you so long to edit this. I am just thrilled you even went there. Now I'm privileged to see and wonder in AWE. Thank you for this pearl. The flowers, the van it was all to make you feel at home. We love the German kitchen although I miss the veges. I agree with kitten: thumbs up! 👍 This sure deserves that. 🌺🩷🇳🇱🙋‍♀🇳🇿

haha, thanks for watching. I do hope you get to visit Mittenwald! Here's the pro tip: go visit when they are bringing the goats down from the mountain! They parade them through the streets and it is supposed to be amazing! I wish we had seen that spectacle! Or go see an Almabtrieb festival where they bring the cows home. They dress up the cows in stunning festive dress there in Bavaria. Another fun thing to see!

Looks a lovely town and like you I love the buildings and architecture. Even a hermit could wander round there. You blended in well with all those magenta flowers and even a magenta car. The chapel looked worth a look inside. In fact since I started my channel and watched other people go inside these types of places I find myself now wandering round them myself. It seems I had been missing out all these years. This one looked quite fabulous inside like all the German ones I have been in. Always fancied playing the violin but probably badly. Super tour. Loverly video - it has taken me back fifty years to when I spent a summer in Mittenwald doing an archeological dig. It was not at all touristy then. My German is rusty. but the sign on the house reads something like - In the year 824 when this was a hermitage in the middle of a forest St Korbinian stayed here for a short time and gifted his staff which is still held in high esteem in this house today. Also if you see "Raebrat mit Knödeln" ( roast roe deer with potato dumplings) on the menu in that part of the world I recommend it!

Dara this is the most beautiful little city with it's painted buildings and such an ornate church...I have been to many churches but have never seen so many balconies...I haven't a clue to why so many in that church...I can understand near the organist as that would be where the choir would be...and possibly some near the alter where some of the reading's are done? Very interesting indeed....Gelato looked delicious...the au gratin potato's and your pork looked very good too...I thought the portions being pretty large...everyone says that in the USA we have large portions, so I found that very interesting that you had two slices of meat...I loved the tour of this town....and it did remind me of the sound of music, one of my favorite movies! We loved your tour of Mittenwald, Dara and Ian. Truly is a storybook town. Loved the architecture of the shops, homes and other buildings. An absolutely stunning church! It's beautiful inside! Truly is over the top with it's opulence. I found myself thinking of Martin Luther looking at it. I also thought of the side balconies. I really don't know why they're there, but I think it may be for some of the wealthy and their buying of indulgences and church privilege's. This would have certainly paid for the craftsmanship here! I do now that this troubled Martin Luther greatly. As beautiful as it is, I tend to agree with him. Ian you wonder if this inspired theatre. Don't know that, but it would be a better place for it in my opinion. That being said I would love to see this church and loved the tour! Lovely video.

I also love baroque architecture and the baroque churches in Europe are stunning, the box up on the wall would have been where the priest stood to deliver his sermon. Old catholic churches have 2 altars and that's because up until the early 1960s and the Second Vatican Council (which brought about huge changes, including the Mass in the language of the country rather than Latin) priests had their backs to the congregation when they celebrated mass. Another reason for the box up in the wall, when delivering the sermon the priest looked out on the congregation, he didn't have his back to them. Vatican 2 changed many things including that priests faced the congregation whilst celebrating mass so churches then installed the front altars that the priests stood behind. The balconies would have been for important members of the congregation including church hierarchy.

They really give decent serving sizes in Germany and Austria. The schnitties looked awesome. With cheese and tomato it looked almost like a parma. Cute town. Very cool to see it in the summer. We've only ever been to the area in Winter so it is usually under metres of snow. I'd still go for the gelato anyway. Actually they are getting unseasonably early dumps of snow right now. My brother lives near Munich and they don't' recall getting this much snow before Christmas before. Did you get to Neuschwanstein? It's only about an hour's drive from MIttenwald.

I've not heard them called schnitties... sounds a bit dirty, but it's a good name. They are always very big portions! So of course, Ian and I share. The best time to visit Mittenwald is when the goats come down off the mountain and they have a parade through town! I'd love to see that.
How fun that your brother lives in Bavaria and you get to visit this lovely area. You do need to go when there is no snow on the ground. @@MagentaOtterTravels I love that you two like a decent feed too. Too many go for budget meals when they travel. You can have great budget meals with a bit of research as well as the occasional splurge on something great. In one of the cities we're looking at for our upcoming trip in March I saw someone online ask is there anything more than a day's worth of site seeing there? And I thought, holy heck, have you no idea how many eateries there are in that city. We could be there for weeks or months. 😂 The first guide book we bought for that country was the new Michelin Guide. So yep, we like our food. 🤣
Things like schnitties are an Oz thing. Parmigiana is parma or parmi (depending on where in Australia you're from). Spaghetti Bolognese is spag bol. Sausages are snags. I suspect we don't do long words very well. 😂
A month in Germany sounds fantastic. We're hoping to hit Europe around Oct, Nov or Dec if the stars align. We may try to get to Germany but it depends on where we fly into, but at this stage it looks like a Greece, Italy, Romania type of thing.
