  • Many attempts were made to harness Loch Doon for Hydro Power between the 1890s and the 1920s, but it wasn't until the National Grid came into existence in the late 1920s that it became a real possibility.
Then in May 1929, a bill making Loch Doon the main reservoir of the Galloway Hydro Scheme gained royal ascent, and work was set to begin.
It could, perhaps, have been derailed by the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression, but this breathtakingly ambitious Renewable Energy Scheme went ahead.
This is the first part in a new series about the building of the Galloway Hydro Scheme.

Fascinating , as always. Moving a ruined Castle , how wild !
For a lovely insight into the Loch Doon Hydro project , the beautiful novel 'House by the loch' by Kirsty Wark is a terrific read.

For some reason Loch Doon is giving me flashbacks to 2020. Can't imagine why.

It's not as deserted as it looks! We tried to film there one day and found it really hard to find a place to film without people, then had several takes ruined by the loudest motorbike you ever heard roaring up and down the bit of road over the dam!

The salmon ladder is a joke, the salmon struggle to get up it and once in the loch they and there smolts struggle to get back out into the river
