- Canoe Slalom is one of the most dynamic & exciting Olympic sports there is! Huw Swetnam, GB Canoeing K1 athlete & Senior Team member, guides us through the intricacies of the sport, with a look at the rules, the venues, the different types of boats & the history, including contributions from members of the GB team at the first ever Olympic competition in Munich in 1972.
Excellent video! Good explanations on kayak vs canoe. I started paddling in 1975 with a boyfriend who had a hand-me-down C-1. In those days no one knew what a C-1 was and women paddling them were incredibly rare. We were in the Washington DC area. We learned to paddle on the beautiful Potomac, which was pretty polluted back then - but got cleaner with each passing year. West Virginia, Virginia & Pennsylvania all had wonderful streams to explore.
I never heard the ‘Canadian’ canoe term. We called them canoes and C-1s. The few women’s events were called C1W.
We thought the C-1 evolved from the Open Canoe because really big men couldn’t fit into the cockpit of a kayak. So the canoes got decked over & evolved to be closer to kayaks in size & weight. Those were great years for me!
Great video. Canoe slalom is probably the most exciting sport to play. There's a club near you, find them out and have a go. It's great.
lee vally park is great for the sport,i remember having to travel to nottingham everyweek to paddle technical water (even N wales )....
