I have this goofy idea that HSS Strats and copies should be wired with the P1 being the Neck and Middle in series, P2 N+M in parallel, P3 N+South coil of the HB in parallel (Tele middle sound), P4 M+ North coil of HB in parallel, P5 HB with a DP/DT switch for Series/Parallel. I think it would have much more useful tones, no hum, and no need to use resistors to balance the values of the pots. What do you think?
Well it's definitely an interesting scheme, but I think it's a very subjective topic. When I was a whelp I tried EVERY wiring, and I'm not exaggerating. On a strat, a les paul, a tele... And I made full circle that I play stock systems now almost exclusively.
I can say one thing. I rarely like splits. And even in the HSS config, I prefer Bridge+Middle to be bridge humbucker and neck single coils. The splits on most PAFs is just a weird sound to me.
Now there are some solutions.
On my PRS 594, I have these partial splits which PRS is doing, and they do sound really good, however I think I split that guitar 3 times since I bought it.
And hum is an issue, yes, really depending on the rig and stage, but if I want to get rid of the hum, I'd go for the Illitch system or something of a kind.
Yeah, so that's my take on that.
Cheers man, and thanks for the comment!
Aha! So, in order to get a "brighter" parallel humbucker sound, we just need to adjust the inductance and resistance.
Probably easy to accomplish this by wiring a dummy-coil-inductor in series, and resistor in parallel.
I too, prefer series humbuckers rather than split coils though.
