I am an engineer and musician with over 10 years of experience in audio equipment design / repair. I have a degree in CGI, and I've worked as a senior communications officer on a cruise ship for 5 years. I even worked for a big name in the music equipment industry. I've done many things in life and I have trouble satisfying my curiosity. Usually I get the question - How many people are you? Just because I managed to do so many different things on a relatively high level. But here's the point. The thing I love the most - music, and sound in general. That's why I am focusing all my efforts, and using all the different skills that I acquired - to create this channel, and this community. I had to start late, I had to start from 0, but I have an honest desire to spread the word of knowledge - to "unconfuse" a completely confused and weird industry, which is feeding of music lovers, by keeping them uneducated and confused.

The Ultimate Hot Rod Deluxe Upgrade

I hate the Hot Rod Deluxe. I think it's one of the worst amps out there, and that many people are misrepresenting it. It has objective problems, and it sounds poor. But it's cheak. Here's how it should sound. Get ready for the launch of www.slightlytechnicalacademy.com! Subscribe for raw, unfiltered insights into mastering the design and usage of audio gear and sound design. A quick playthrough a very polarizing amplifier - the RED KNOB Fender. A few different models were made in this era, and it is Fenders attempt at high gain. Fuzzy, buzzy, but fun. I played the Lmt. Edition Hot Rod IV and like it. Which one would you recommend? I loved the clean sound and reverb.
@@MOAB-UT i would just go for build quality, so the lmt. Edition is much better. Plus they come with a much better speaker of I remember correctly.
@@slightlytechnical103 Thanks. Why is the limited edition build better? Is it still not a thin pcb board? What speaker is in it? Are they less noisy? It was fine in GC.
@MOAB-UT to be honest I didn't really nerd out on all the iteration differences, but I don't think there is anything special about them, other than they are newer, so the PCB is a bit better and some distance has been made between the PCB and the resistors that go hot. The speaker that I would see in these was some type of celestion creamback. The PCB is definitely thicker and better in these.
@@slightlytechnical103 Sounds like you did nerd out- I appreciate that level of detail. All I know is it sounded great in the store. Wish it had Trem. but the verb was great and the clean blew me away. It will likely be my next amp. I was considering a Vibrolux- still might, but this one was pretty nice and you can find a new one for under a grand with full warranty. I also like the tweed look and black control panel on top. One downside is that at 41lbs., it is a pretty heavy amp.
@MOAB-UT i just got to repair / mod / try a bunch of em.... it's a very common amp around here. The one I liked the most stock is the Blues Deluxe limited. Was quite good.
Thanks for this nice work. I have the same experience with my 513, sounds to hifi and dull. I have changed the tone circuit to classic wiring and changed the volume pot to 1 meg. Sounds way better!Does this also help to compensate for high inductance? How does the circuit you made work? Is it a simple FET circuit before the jack or is it done per coil element? Thanks and keep it up!
@hansbilsen hey thanks for the comment! So the 1 Meg pots are definitely a way to help a bit, but for me the problem with adding a bigger pot is that it will not being the air that I felt was lacking, rather it changes the Q of the filter (a way of describing it) so it basically increases the honk, or the "quack". The circuit I made works for all coils and is tailored to sound optimal for all three modes, however I had some wet dreams lf creating a separate circuit for each mode for more detailed fine tuning but I really think there is no need. It just complicates stuff so much. Now that some time has passed, I play this guitar all the time, I am beyond satisfied with it, I wouldn't change anything.
If I have a tuner and for example wah (some pedals that I don't use in the same time) and I have 10 pedals but only 8 inputs... Should I split 1 input for wah and tuner then and another for overdrive and boost/tube screamer and work with just 8 inputs with 2 daisy chain cables?
@@johnny.guitar that should work no problem
Nice background music by the way!!
mmmm thx man
Very useful thanks

amps sounds great. How about sharing the mods and values?

Aha! So, in order to get a "brighter" parallel humbucker sound, we just need to adjust the inductance and resistance. Probably easy to accomplish this by wiring a dummy-coil-inductor in series, and resistor in parallel.
I too, prefer series humbuckers rather than split coils though.
"It's not cool to be dumb, it never was" Haha, I need to quote this.
Finally, a channel without "toan" myths and mysticism! This deserves wayyy more views!
The red knob twin is my favorite amp! Love how the overdrive sings! So much range with the push pull EQ.
I have this goofy idea that HSS Strats and copies should be wired with the P1 being the Neck and Middle in series, P2 N+M in parallel, P3 N+South coil of the HB in parallel (Tele middle sound), P4 M+ North coil of HB in parallel, P5 HB with a DP/DT switch for Series/Parallel. I think it would have much more useful tones, no hum, and no need to use resistors to balance the values of the pots. What do you think?
Well it's definitely an interesting scheme, but I think it's a very subjective topic. When I was a whelp I tried EVERY wiring, and I'm not exaggerating. On a strat, a les paul, a tele... And I made full circle that I play stock systems now almost exclusively. I can say one thing. I rarely like splits. And even in the HSS config, I prefer Bridge+Middle to be bridge humbucker and neck single coils. The splits on most PAFs is just a weird sound to me. Now there are some solutions. On my PRS 594, I have these partial splits which PRS is doing, and they do sound really good, however I think I split that guitar 3 times since I bought it. And hum is an issue, yes, really depending on the rig and stage, but if I want to get rid of the hum, I'd go for the Illitch system or something of a kind. Yeah, so that's my take on that. Cheers man, and thanks for the comment!

Yeah how much the build me one, August pair about three hundred bucks,,lol, Sounded pretty good. How's the lead sound on it? Or how's it sound when you play leads
The TriAxis is a beast not many fully understand. They're intimidated by all the options and few rarely dive DEEP into the understanding behind how the controls affect each other, behind the scenes. For example, in the LD2 settings, the Treble control is actually a secondary gain stage. So you have Gain, Treble, AND Lead 2 Drive all affecting that gain's saturation. As always, RTFM and your eyes will be opened to so much more that it can do 😉
So what have you done to it?
@@craigtodd8297 I'll be having the mod guide on my website in a couple of weeks :)
WTF! glad you decide to save it
These have had serous issues since they were first designed and fender never cared to address them because people were buying them like hotcakes. I've come across a few that were in need of service. I usually gut them and handwire a bassman or plexi in them. I would suggest Ceriatone instead of a hot.rod fender for the money
Had one with a v30 in it. Pawned it for drug money and never got it back. No regrets
I do have a feeling I'd do the same 😁
Do you share with us what you have done? Your video doesn't really explain it on a tech level. Thanks.
I'm still not sure whether the majority of people likes to watch me mod an amp, because the videos would be long and boring for most people. So I kind of do the in between thing, but I will be sharing the details. Now in October, I will be launching my website (it's in the works) and there I will be posting these projects with schematics and explanations. So follow the videos, I will be announcing it. Thanks.
How do you like the mod? Do you like how the OD channels sound now?
Yes, sounded great. Nice riffs
Yeah most amplifier reviews nowadays are just glorified advertisements by people that know how to play, but aren't qualified to judge the actual build quality/reliability (or even the safety, unfortunately in regards to some brands/builders). Those "how does it sound" videos have their place, but I really hate planned obsolescence. I especially hate planned obsolescence in amplifiers that are meant to inspire people to play more and pursue their musical goals, and trashing an amp isn't a dig at the people that play or buy them, but the builders basically ripping normal people off. That's my problem with the HRD, especially because it is a lot of people's first tube amp. It also has contributed towards the misappropriated disdain for PCBs in guitar amps.
@@Adam_Stenzel agreed.
This is soo unique story, i like it! This can happen only in our country! :D and also, really good job! Great video!
Thanks man :))
Since the triaxis is based on mesa mark amps, you should keep the bass low on lead modes in higher gain settings, and compensate with the graphic eq. In this case, since the triaxis doesn't have a graphic eq, just use the DV
why is it, that PRS guitars sound always fuzzy and not very precise? there are no contours in the sound ... that´s why i sold my CE24
I have a bassman 125 that i really didnt like. I kept in storage as a future "dumble" project, is the ultra linear/pentode switch worth having?
I honestly don't think it's worth having. I actually had some kind of half power rotary switch installed, never used it, so I just reorganized it into this ultralinear / pentode switch, just to play around and make the video. To be honest, I prefer the pentode mode on this particular amp. You can mod that 125 Bassman to be a very serious amp!
One of the best explanations of the power station ive seen, very well done. If you have loud vintage amps you want to totally enjoy, the Fryette is the only way to go. Best investment ive ever made as far as an attenuator is concerned.
Thanks! I agree, the Fryette is the only way to go!
You did a great job bringing that poor amp back to life! I'm definitely interested in the way you converted it to a plate fed tone stack. I like what You're doing, new sub!
Thanks and welcome! I am working those docs and more amps are coming. I will probably be making a community on Circle where I can share all those docs.
