The thing that's always interested me about RAID 10 is compared to RAID 6, RAID 10 is much faster because of the striping vs dual pairity calcs of R6, but the tradeoff is if a 2nd disk fails, it depends which disk it is whether or not your array will fail. Each use case is different, but 1E, 6(0), and 10, (or ZFS) are the only ones I'd really consider using today with larger disks.
For home users, unless you rely on critical self-hosted services or something that you can't afford to ever have go down, I usually just tell people not to RAID them since you need backups anyways - just use the whole disk capacity as individual disks, then restore from backups if there's ever an issue. It's also a lot easier to recover data from an individual disk compared to a member of a failed array, but everything's always gonna be a compromise
Thank you for sharing your insights! RAID configurations indeed come with tradeoffs, and it's great to see thoughtful advice for different use cases. Backup strategies are key, and we always recommend users choose what's best for their needs.
