- Oscar winner Josh Cooley and Oscar nominee Brian Tyree Henry have a genuine love for the Transformers franchise. We had the pair come to The Academy's Margaret Herrick Library to break down one of their favorite scenes from their upcoming film Transformers One, featuring D16 taking the first steps into becoming the big bad Megatron. The two discuss the subtle nods to the Transformers universe, what goes into voice-acting for a villain in the making, and just how ridiculously good looking this latest batch of Transformers are.
Welcome to Behind The Shot, where filmmakers take you on a journey into how they craft the look and feel behind their favorite scenes and shots from the movies you love.

the throne being a starscreams crown from 86 blew my mind. on my mama ain’t nobody coulda caught that easter wgg
I thought it was more of a reference to his big purple throne in 86 rather than the crown itself.
Starscream toys studio series 86
The movie 84.
G1 Transformers.
This scene never fails to give me goosebumps. This movie ruled and the character work on Megatron was absolutely stunning. Props to Josh and Brian for not only selling this character, but also making me wanna buy 100 more of him.
Now this is a director I want behind the transformers franchise, and for the studio not have so many constraints
No wonder I feel bitter about executive middling. Can’t these people do anything right anymore?
This scene was so powerful. I felt D-16 slowly turning to Megatron. Makes you understand why he chose to hate.
And it gives so much weight to Starscream and Megatron's relationship we know and even Starscream betraying Megatron in the classic movie. Starscream always wanted to rule because he once did and Megatron took it from him.
@@dwaiting883 also the casting choice for Starscream was perfect. But also what happened to his voice in the end was funny. Now we know Megatron takes more than one bot voice.
Henry fangirling over Megatron body is the next best thing I m more and more fond of henry❤
I would love a concept art book for this film.
Are you telling me that Transformers one could be in the Oscar’s😮
It should be with all the love being put into the film
If my boy Brian not win some damn awards for his voice performance we RIOT, the man absolutely COOK as Megatron
I didnt see many of the trailers before watching and this scene caught me by surprise with the Starscream reveal, he had a surprising amount of screen presence whenever the camera was on him and it was genuinely really hype when he descends the throne and starts squaring off with Megatron, it felt like two big name boxers had just stepped into the ring, which is something rarely seen with Starscream. I was just very impressed they made him seem like an authentic portrayal while making him seem like a leader they would have followed before Megatron
0:57 the fact that Megatron is still smaller than Starscream is insane
base d16 without a T cog, after he get s a cog he doubles in size
@@predaconhe had a cog at this point, just not Megatronus’s.
@@BeskarDevild16 got to go through puberty twice, starscream never had a chance to stay the tallest 😢
This movie was soooo good
D 16 dethroning Starscream was a reminder of Starscream ending his coronation swiftly by Galvatron way back in 1986 movie.
"This is bad comedy"
@@johnboko7110 spot on.. Galvatron's words voiced by the one and only Leonard Nimoy
I love the facial expressions of the main characters. Writing, Animation, voice acting, everything was just hitting on all cylinders in this movie.
It’s beautiful.
When I tell you this man put his ALL into this role
Especially that scene after he, uh… halves the enemy. You know the one.
"youre gonna feel a lot of things in transformers one" I Sure Did Mostly Pain
This was where the movie found its momentum! I went to see it today. The most awesome animated feature film I’ve seen since TMNT Mutant Mayhem. My expectations were shattered

Having seen Inside Out 2 and Wild Robot / Transformers One thru advance screenings, I think Transformers One has a good shot at winning the Oscars. The 3 titles are pretty much a coming of age film. But a shakespearean tragedy in this lore is just something else. A rare gem. Transformers might have struck a lightning in a bottle with this one and could win it all.
Specially after all the shit revealed by IGN about Pixar's crunch. If last year many people celebrated ATSV didn't win due to the animators' crunch, I hope people don't stay silent about Inside Out 2.
TF One is better then Inside Out 2! I’m sorry as much as I love Pixar
Pixar👎👎👎👎
What About
The Wild Robot?
I haven't seen it yet, but I love the way megatron eyes turn red slowly
Guys I have watched this movie and guys don't miss the post credit scene...important lead to the continuation of the next movie...
I just hope the movie makes enough money
Using Megatron's cannon as something that visually represents his shift into a more violent character is so simple and brilliant.
Man they spoiled this year's animated winner.
At least it's not Disney.
Guess Paramount paid them a lot.
Nah the Wild Robot.
Funny thing tho, the director of this movie worked on Toy Story 4.
The Wild Robot >The Boy and The Heron.
@@sonictiger6716Should have did the same for TMNT Mutant Mayhem
Great voice acting, animation. So much to like about Transformers ONE. Well worth it!
Brian you did so well as D16 into Megatron I want your Autograph plz come to a Transformers convention 1 day.
Fantastic work by both of these guys
The pacing of the movie was a bit fast for everything that happened in an 105 minute-ish movie, but it was still good. If they had given the movie a few more minutes to spacie things out and let it flow a little more naturally, it would be an absolute winner. Because i felt so much happened so fast, and the movie doesn't give a lot of time to 'breathe' if you will.
The running time was a bit of a glitch. I could have went for 10 more minutes. But I was surprised by how amazing the film overall turned out.
I can not wait My 13 Yearold daughter, My 9 Year old son have watched the 1986 animated movie multiple times but now The Transformers FINALLY have an origin Movie 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽, Thank You.
There are so many nods to *every* generation of the franchise in this movie.
I love this movie. This movie threw me a LOT of curves and I am very versed in the lore. I knew that Sentinel was a dirt bag but I didn't know how VICIOUS and GREEDY he was.
By the way, Robotic mechanisms would still blink to keep DUST out of their optics and they could have eyeballs if they were designed like that.
With 👏🏾 My 👏🏾 Head 👏🏾 In👏🏾 Your 👏🏾 Teeth!!👏🏾
Don’t know where they pulled this line from but it made me so happy in the theatre, so cool!
This is my favorite video on the internet rn
GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!
This was my favourite part of the film. I love Megatron and Starscream’s dynamic, they’re so deranged when they’re together.
The SOUND DESIGN when he turns bad is just chilling
Academy, PLEEEEEEEASE recognize this movie at the Oscar's next year 😭
This scene w/ D-16 was Paul Astrides or Caesar (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) moment for me like I'm siding with him.
In all the promos the cast and director seem like they’re genuinely having a great time and care about the movie
This movie better get best animated picture of the year in the Oscars
I love this guy's work process. Sound off is a great idea. It worked well in the finale
"Your gonna feel a lot of things in transformers one" Ya the scary fact that I can actually relate to Megatrons pent up pure rage

I saw this last week. And that scene had me screaming like crazy over D-16 pounding Starscream in front of everyone. And Pax terrified over what his best friend is becoming.
Ironic that Megatron's greatest victim is the one who made him this way...
For some reason, i was so invested in D-16 that I forgot for a few moments Orion was the main character.
That's how you write a character for your movie
I can't wait to see this movie 😍💖💗💙
The movie is great! D-16's arc was amazing!
This scene is just amazing. It's intense for anyone watching. As for the fans tho... It's like a tsunami of cameos, there's so much to name here. Transformers Two next, please.
megatron's character arc was gripping from start to finish
It was so great!
I love you d-16 I like that big robot adds he my king of the throne
If Transformers One doesn't get nominated, I'm genuinely gonna lose my shit dude
SUCH A GREAT FILM
A shame that this film is severely underperforming because it was so good. Probably better than the entire Bayverse films, and second only Bumblee. I highly enjoyed it and wanna see more.
The nemesis wreckage is in the movie
Man I want a trilogy so baaaaad
Great movie! I wish it was performing better in theaters. Hopefully word of mouth will give it a second life, and maybe even a cult following.
Spoiler bro
So Starscream is the original Deceptacon leader?
🐂💩
Watch the movie and find out
no he rules the high guard ( basically cybertrons seekers )
Never was and never will be 😂
@@predaconTrue that. I love that in most continuities he’s introduced as being some kind of leader: captain of Sentinel Primes elite guard/King of Vos/ Air commander in-charge of energon production, etc… it’s a nice resume if you ask me.
Not exactly. He only being the leader of high guard, there's no decepticons yet.
"You're gonna feel a lot of things in Transformers One"
Right, because it felt like going down Memory Lane while being chased by your past, your traumas, your dreams, and your nightmares 🥲 [/j, but really, personal reasons: Didn't think I could relate with D-16 to a certain degree...]
Jokes aside, watched it five times [even when I'm already broke af]: No Regrets. First time I've ever wanted to watch a movie more than once in a cinema and still wanting more afterwards. Can only hope I can watch it again before it's no longer being shown in cinemas...
