Billy Butterfield is the most underrated trumpet player of the 20th century.

Billy was highly valued among musicians of the period, who valued his chops and enormous competency and reliability. He was a little lacking in originality and Louis Armstrong, when asked to discuss the merits of Billy and Bobby Hackett, said he thought Bobby "had more ingredients".

How pithy of Louis! Bobby Hackett was often limited by ill health, never developed an easy high range...and yet is more satisfying jazz player than Butterfield. Though Bill is certainly a better role model for sheer playing ability.

Billie Butterfield played most Iike Bix! Condon had the best musicians!
