Man when i tell you i can't stop repeating this vid in tears, it takes me back to The Minnesota Sound back in the late 70s-80s,everything Prince, this has me thinking Andre Cymone, Dez Dickerson Production, and refreshing to know that i wasn't off track seeing Mr. Jesse Johnson on guitar(Go Jesse).
I believe we have finally witnessed the true Michael D'Angelo Archer. The man who just wants to make music that not only embodies funk, soul and blues but also pays homage to those that came before him. The MDA of "Brown Sugar and Voodoo" is still the same MDA of today but he's back to what makes him special. He's back to making the kinda of music that true listeners and enthusiasts alike can enjoy. This is music, this is artistry....this IS how music should sound. Thank you MDA and while i can't wait for the album I will settle for snippets of your next musically masterpiece. Salute
I love this song! It has that Prince feel to it. I'm so glad D'Angelo is back and sounding like he never missed a beat! Everybody go read the latest D'Angelo article in GQ magazine! You won't be disappointed!!!!
***** It reminds me of "Christopher Tracy's Parade" on the "Parade" album. And the middle 8 has something from the chord progression of "Strange Relationship" (from "Sign o' the times"). Saw him yesterday playing live again (D' not Prince) after 15 years. It was just perfect .. powerful, raw, super-professional but unpretentious, sensual, the best band on the planet.. what a blessing in this day and age where people with laptop-computers and ableton live-controllers dominate the stages of festivals and venues..
He pulled Jesse Johnson in on this one!!!! Jesse reigns on the guitar for real!! Love the Prince feel. Can't get better than this. Glad D'Angelo is back!
D'Angelo thank u thank u 1 000 000 times for giving us what we needed so baaaaad for so fucking long, but we weren't getting it from the one we were expecting it!!!!!!!!! Thank u, Respect u, love u. It's all about music not names and egos.
From “Brown Sugar” to “Black Messiah” I’ve been in love with this KING. He has evolved to icon status in my book...D’Angelo keeps Princes legacy Alive & I love them both! ❤️
I luuuuv the retro 80's sound! Music artists like The Black Crowes, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis and now Raphael Saadiq have had very successful & big careers by keeping one foot in the past. I hope the rest of D'Angelo's upcoming album continues in the same direction as this song. Oh how I miss the days of synth pop, New Wave & Mtv (when Mtv used to play videos).
This sounds so much like a Prince influenced song. D'angelo is a genius in his own right but even more so, for choosing to work with and be compared to the greatest of all time....Prince
def Prince but more than than in there as well. EWF for sure, as well as that Bernie Worrell synth part and maybe even a little Beatles/George Harrison when the guitar gets all indian and sitary. Plus D's own unique style and music; but its more than just the sum of its parts. this is one of the best songs he, or any of those other artists even, has done.
“All we wanted was a chance to talk 'Stead we only got outlined in chalk” - yeah real lullaby material to sing to your kids. These comments are something else 😆
hell yea i always rewind the intro about 20 times before i let the whole song play, i just love how everything (including D) sounds as soon as the vid starts
he's done songs before that sound so much like Prince songs tht u would actually think its Prince, but none like this, this song sounds more like a Prince song than any of the other ones, and trust me i LOVE it, reminds me of Prince's Dirty Mind album
In the last 20 years there are 2 songs that stand out. "YOU SAVED ME" Gary Clark Jr "CHARADE" D'Angelo and they both have the same feel, it is called PARADE 1986 - Prince both songs are MASTERPIECES!!!!!!!!!!!
this song is amazing, i've been in a D'Angelo and Bob Marley lately, they both have amazing music i cant wait til D'Angelo drops his new album "James River" its gonna be amazing
I think The Revolution would be more appropriate! Some of the bandmembers even have that 1985 kinda look going on: D with his black headscarf a la Prince, Jesse who already looks like Prince all his life, and the female background singer with the Lisa Coleman hairdo. Fantastic song BTW, I really like how old school "Minneapolis" it sounds. I wish Prince would do stuff like this again...
there's a possibility, but u have to remember tht Prince is D's biggest influence, so it wouldnt be a surprise if D has actually mastered Prince's own sound
The "dude" is Jesse Johnson, a guitar legend in his own right, original member of The Time (Prince's side project) together with Jam&Lewis (Janet Jackson's producers) and starred in Purple Rain. That's who the "dude" is.
lol i said the same freakin thing when i 1st saw this, i was like omg! is tht Prince, but then as it went on i realized it wasnt him, but he did have us fooled though
This is the song I expect to be on "James River" that most reminds me of Prince, and the influence he's had on what probably feels like a "li'l brother" to him.
this is 10 times better than the album version.
Agreed this song takes me to galaxies the way it's played live.
It's one of the songs on the album that sounds significantly better live. Sugah Daddy is another one
Yessah! Prince is all over this one. One of favorites!
Love that Jesse Johnson is ripping it up on guitar...D got one of the best players from that Prince era.
Prince all day, love it D'Angelo...
Just cant stop listening to his album!
I know right..Im addicted
TruMusicGen Hamilton Ditto
Finally some real music in today's sterile music environment. LOVE IT!!!!!
definitely Prince inspired
Most definitely! And he openly admits it! Love it!
admits it and at times surpasses his influences. either way, both awesome musicians and ecentric individuals ta-boot!
This is Genius! He is his own version of Prince.
Jason McNair Exactly, this has Prince written all over it! I freakin Dig It!
This is on repeat. BEST song on the album
This song is dope.. it sounds like It would fit.. on Prince;s Parade or Around the World in a day.
JESSE JOHNSON ON GUITAR! Google the man and understand how great this moment is...Awesome!
I can't stop listening to this i love it so much plus the performance has that Purple Rain feel. :)
Absolutely love this. So Prince.
Jessie Johnson killing on Lead Guitar... Lead Guitar player toe THE TIME from the Purpler Rain movie

Well said! this IS how music should sound. It's so refreshing to hear such as amazing work in this era of artistic bankruptcy.
He's a multifaceted masterpiece.
I love this song! It has that Prince feel to it. I'm so glad D'Angelo is back and sounding like he never missed a beat! Everybody go read the latest D'Angelo article in GQ magazine! You won't be disappointed!!!!
On the album Pino plays bass and sitar on this cut, great song
Kedar. Yeah man Pino is one of the greatest. His bass performance is the glue that holds this whole great track together.
This could easily be a missing from Purple Rain.
Almost looks like the same club from the movie.
***** It reminds me of "Christopher Tracy's Parade" on the "Parade" album. And the middle 8 has something from the chord progression of "Strange Relationship" (from "Sign o' the times"). ryederz Couldn't have said it better, truly enjoyed his live performance last night in Houston!
Still on fire!!!
This song has so many Prince vibes. And Jesse Johnson playing the guitar solo. Can't get better than that.
Definitely has that classic sound to it. Great melody, instrumentation and vocals. Feels great to hear some music with depth again..
He pulled Jesse Johnson in on this one!!!! Jesse reigns on the guitar for real!! Love the Prince feel. Can't get better than this. Glad D'Angelo is back!
Brilliant and gorgeous.
D'Angelo thank u thank u 1 000 000 times for giving us what we needed so baaaaad for so fucking long, but we weren't getting it from the one we were expecting it!!!!!!!!!
Thank u, Respect u, love u. It's all about music not names and egos.
My favorite on this inspired album.
Jesse is the REASON I bought my first guitar and still play!
From “Brown Sugar” to “Black Messiah” I’ve been in love with this KING. He has evolved to icon status in my book...D’Angelo keeps Princes legacy Alive & I love them both! ❤️
Love his hair like this
Favorite song off the album

So excited to hear a studio version. This is a big one!
I luuuuv the retro 80's sound! Music artists like The Black Crowes, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis and now Raphael Saadiq have had very successful & big careers by keeping one foot in the past. So music is NOT dead! Thanks to D'Angelo.
very rEVOLUTIONY
THIS SONG IS SO 1987 PRINCE.. AND I LOVE IT.. SITAR
BEAUTIFUL SONG, THANKS!
WOW!!! This song is the stuff!!!!!
hopefully whatever song they did together makes the final cut of the album, D'Angelo Ft. Prince, man tht is gonna be so freakin epic
This sounds so much like a Prince influenced song. D'angelo is a genius in his own right but even more so, for choosing to work with and be compared to the greatest of all time....Prince

Totally captured that New Power Generation sound!
LOVE!!!!!!!!!
This song is freakN dopeness.. Got that Prince influence..
can’t wait to sing this as a lullaby when i have kids 👑
“All we wanted was a chance to talk
'Stead we only got outlined in chalk” - yeah real lullaby material to sing to your kids. These comments are something else 😆
You sort of hit the nail on the head. The middle eastern/psycodelic influences are very reminicent of Around the World in a Day period 1985.
hell yea i always rewind the intro about 20 times before i let the whole song play, i just love how everything (including D) sounds as soon as the vid starts
Me too.I just can't explain what kind of record it is.rock, soul, it's everything in there.the best I've heard.a masterpiece.
Did I forget to mention that this song jams? #badass
I love this song, d'angelo is beyond talented. Love his hair like this, and the way he styled the bandana

Glad to see Pino Palladino, I sure hope he's on D's upcoming album. Love his bass playing.
D'Angelo is Marvin , James , Curtis , Jimi , Sly , Prince and yes Michael all rolled in one. The Chosen one.
GREATNESS
he's done songs before that sound so much like Prince songs tht u would actually think its Prince, but none like this, this song sounds more like a Prince song than any of the other ones, and trust me i LOVE it, reminds me of Prince's Dirty Mind album
Very Prince....

Best album of 2014 to me!!!
This song HAS GOT to make it to the new album! Drop it, D, this shit is hot!!!
hell yea
Sweet Isa!
I really dig the Charade, good song. Black Messiah shoulda got album of the year nomination.
This is his Priciest bit of business ever, but it is still unbelievably amazing. Oh my days it's good. Roll on James River!
WOW, WE 2 YEARS LATE... THIS IS HOT..
Totally. Read that Prince worked with him on the upcoming record.
Chris daddy Dave on the drums
Wow 3 years ago?!?!
there's a possibility, but u have to remember tht Prince is D's biggest influence, so it wouldnt be a surprise if D has actually mastered Prince's own sound
Pino Palladino---from The Who to D'Angelo....thats a quantum leap ordinarily, but a small step for Pino :)
He produced the new album.
I feel like he is reliving his moment of Purple Rain....:-)I seen him in K.C he Rocked!!
Stephanie Harper I actually thought the dude on guitar was prince for a sec
The "dude" is Jesse Johnson, a guitar legend in his own right, original member of The Time (Prince's side project) together with Jam&Lewis (Janet Jackson's producers) and starred in Purple Rain. That's who the "dude" is.
you can hear the inspiration in this song: Prince
yeah but we need an album, it's been way to long!
Dis is awesome and jesse johnson enough said!
Saw him live last night, truly amazing live performer actually better then his album!
Yeah, thats true, but I heard that Prince produced 4 new songs for D so thats what I was going by.
lol i said the same freakin thing when i 1st saw this, i was like omg! is tht Prince, but then as it went on i realized it wasnt him, but he did have us fooled though
