The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Ohhh, absolute Heaven to see this after 50+ years. I saw The Rothschilds in the original run... three times! And this song was a joy. Yes, the second son who came on is Robby Benson and the fourth was Mike TeeVee from Willy Wonka movie (the good one with Gene Wilder...1971).

Oh, yeah...agree. Ya know, the critics complained that this show (a patriarch with five sons) and Fidder (a patriarch with five daughters) -and also the score is by the same two (Jerry Bock & Sheldon Harnick).. was some kind of carbon copy of Fiddler. Unfair comparison, of course.

Bock and Harnick wrote such delightful group numbers - as this charming song (and these wonderful performances) illustrate.

It was a Broadway flop, so probably not. Has had some scaled down revivals in NYC, but not on Broadway. This was the year that the NYPL began filming shows for archives, so you might be able to go there and watch it in the library.

This isn't the first time a cast member of Barney Miller appeared on Sullivan. The actor who played Levitt did a stand up comedy routine around 1969.
