    I actually love this knife. Where I live it is around 30$ and knives with higher-end steels are a lot more expensive than in the USA. To be honest, in my day-to-day usage it is about 95% scissors, 5% knife and so the steel is not very important. Sure would not mind an m390 sak but not having to pay 150$ for it.. then I would rather have 5 regular ones. The upside to the steel is that it is very rust-proof and super easy to strop.

    If Victorinox would upgrade to even a steel such as 14c28n that would be a huge and acceptable improvement over the current stainless. As they are they're more of a secondary knife/multi-tool or collectors object. That said I do carry a Rangergrip 78 once in a while as a primary.

    I have the cigar punch version that doesn't have the clip and it adds the 3 size cigar punch and it's in silver that is kind of classier than the red and of course it is no longer made. the Ambassador is the same as the money clip without the clip and it has celidor plastic scales with the tweezers and toothpick and only about $25. I think it has been discontinued as well.

      Yeah bro, avoid the ones with Cork Screw, in real life is almost never to be used, and almost any cheap Cork Screw can do the same... Better go for the ones that have a screwdriver instead of the cork screw... Like the model Tinker Deluxe for example or the ones of over 111 mm those are good, and the smallest modelo the one that like the Moneyclip has knife, scisors and dile, but those have little twizers and a toothpick And can be put to your keys 👌

    • @martintanz9098
      @martintanz9098 3 года назад

      @@glasius22 I don't use the corkscrew all that often any more, but in the past, I sure did. Back in the 80s, I spent a year in France and that corkscrew saved the day more than once. And even after that, I probably used the corkscrew on my Swiss Army knife more than any waiter's corkscrew that was constantly floating around somewhere in my kitchen drawer. But whatever works for you. These knives are so cheap, almost anyone can afford more than one. A keychain knife as an emergency backup, something like a tourist, Spartan, Climber, Camper, or Tinker, depending on whether you want a Phillips screwdriver or a corkscrew on the back side of the knife. And a big knife like an Explorer or Swiss champ to keep in a glove box or kitchen drawer.

  • @martintanz9098
    @martintanz9098 3 года назад +7

    I am a Victorinox collector and I have this knife, but rarely carry it. Because it isn't all that useful. For carrying in a pocket, a classic SD or my personal favorite, the manager are even smaller and the keyring attachment is more functional that the clip, which as you said, is pretty terrible as an actual money clip. And when you actually want to cut something, one of the bigger Victorinox knives would be the way to go, attached to a suspension clip for pocket carry.
    The blade on the money clip knife is pretty small, so it really is only for light cutting tasks, like opening an envelope, or cutting through some packing tape when opening a box. Or maybe peeling an orange.
    So who is this money clip knife for? Maybe someone who plans to keep the knife in a suit or jacket pocket, but who doesn't want to carry something even a little bigger like a Cadet Alox or Bantam?

  • @davidsiegel9847
    @davidsiegel9847 3 года назад +5

    Well, if I were to pull out one of my 130mm one hand opening Swiss Army Knives with a great big locking blade, that benign Victorinox impression might dissolve posthaste! Even the popular 111mm locking blades with one hand opening look a little bit like real knives.
    After 55 years of using Victorinox knives, no, we are not sharpening all the time, Nick. These are light duty pocket knives. Not for slashing cartons all day. They cannot be compared to a constant use blade. I strop lightly more than any formal sharpening, although I do have the handy Victorinox pen sized diamond sharpener. The steel most certainly does not need to sharpened all the time.
    For carton I use a heavy box cutter. For whittling and bushcraft I use a modest "super" steel, and general outdoors my carbon steel Norwegian Helle forest knife, or maybe a Finnish pukka.
    Small Victorinox knives are for string and fruit and envelopes and other light, non-intensive tasks. My oldest is 50 years old. The steel is barely worn.

    I dont think Victorinox would do a premium steel line any time soon... It would require a complete -retooling for the handful of people that are wanting higher end steels. They have done knives in other steels but not at their main production facility. They would have to completely re work their stamping and tooling machines.
    Even if all of Nick Shabazzs subscribers represented the market who wants a higher end steel, it still would not cover the cost and production changes to do it long term.

For the keychain models, I used to love the Wenger Pocket Tool Chest but it fell out of my pocket somewhere, so now it's the Victorinox Manager. The blade itself I barely use, but the other tools are nice to have.

It's intended to be a secondary blade and I carry it primarily for it's scissors, to accompany a carry combination which lacks scissors and a secondary blade. As you rightly said it's sheeple friendly so if I'm carrying it with my Spyderco Urban (which looks a bit scary here in London UK lol) and need to cut something in front of non-knife folk I can use the Victorinox. That's a configuration I bought it to fit in, carried with a Spyderco Urban, Knipex Cobra XS and Geekey on keyring (for screwdriver and bottle opener capability). Or together with my Leatherman Bond. Or with Manly Wasp and SOG Micro Toolclip. The list goes on.

    Sandvik 14c28n would be a good alternative to 12c27 in my opinion (if victorinox ever thought of it), that one would be perfect for that price range, and the steel is made by the same company. Plus I am quite a huge fan of that steel(my kershaw leek has Sandvik 14c28n and when I sharpened it I could rest it on my arm and use the weight of the knife to shave arm hair, it holds an edge for quite a bit too).

    Still enjoyed the review, but yeah the steel bias is showing quite a bit here. With the use you're actually going to press a 74mm Victorinox into regularly frankly the most important thing is that it doesn't rust easily (which it succeeds at). Stropping/honing a knife on occasion shouldn't be a big deal, I just don't see the increase in cost moving to high end steel would actually benefit consumers in a meaningful way for the most part.
    This video highlighted something interesting to me though, when I hear or see a money clip I've never once thought of it being a wallet replacement is that how it's seen in the us? I just assumed the prevalence was a convenient way to carry a larger amount of notes, because the USD is a notes heavy currency, carrying a card of import in a money clip just seems like a good way to damage or lose those cards.
    Would your view appreciably change of the moneyclip aspect if you removed cards from the equation?

    It probably doesn’t make sense for Victorinox to use a higher-grade steel with the way they construct their knives. With pin construction, it wouldn’t help to use a more expensive steel for the blade if it had to be serviced and/or replaced. You don’t regularly see a lot of pinned knives with good steel, or at least I haven’t.

    If Victorinox started using good steels, they'd just go way up in price. ie: that little guy in M390 would cost $100+. We've already seen it with CRKT, Buck, Case, Boker...When these big brands known for cheap-ish knives get into good steels...They just charge a sh*t ton more.

      @1xayekim 3 года назад

      Yep MKM Mercury did the Malga for 130 with m390 with blade, fork, can opener, awl, cork remover, micarta scales. I think it sells for around 109 but yeah I think the point of SAKs is you are spending less than 50 for a multi tool that is going to get you out of binds not be a daily driver.

    • @dtownknives
      @dtownknives 3 года назад +2

      I think one of the problems with us knife people looking at SAKS is that we are not their primary market. The primary customers for victorinox are the non-tactical versions of the people that buy mtechs. They know a knife will be useful, but they aren't knife people, so they buy a well known and readily available brand with some extra tools.
      M390 would be a horrible choice for victorinox. It'll take it well out of their primary customers' price bracket, and be too difficult for most of their customers to sharpen. A more budget steel upgrade, such as 14c28n, would be ideal for everyone.

    Nice to hear someone else with some credibility call out Victorinox's terrible, terrible blade steel. I carry a SAK Classic every day in my pocket for its other tools (mainly the toothpick, but the file comes in handy far more often than you'd think) but always carry a real knife for actual cutting. I also own a couple of the bigger SAKs that I have stowed around for general purpose needs where I'm too lazy to get the proper tool (frequently the scissors). On both my Classic and the bigger home knives, the blades are only ever for edge-abusive purposes (most often trimming tape or insulation material around metal things).
    You're absolutely right, Nick. Victorinox offering their blades in an even remotely half-respectable steel (like say properly heat-treated 12C27, X50CrMoV15, or 4116) would be a game changer. I'd pay a 30% premium for that. Hell, if they offered it in 14C28N/AEB-L, I'd pay double. Victorinox's trash steel is the only thing that's kept me from buying a Cadet.

    Edit: And Nick is exactly right: You use your Vic. as intended, do some crafty stuff with it on the go, appreciate the functionality crammed into the tiny frame, and then you're done and you Know - not wonder, not suspect - know for damn sure that you'll have to re-sharpen the damn blade, and that the tip will be especially worn and take 10 extra minutes of reworking.

    I like these scales far better than the usual plastic or alox version scales. How come we don't see it on more Victorinox models? These scales on a classic model would be absolutely perfect for a 5th pocket knife. I do agree that these knives should be available with proper steels. It doesn't have to be s90v, but anything that doesn't get dull just by looking at it would be nice, especially for these tiny blades.

      Rough Ryder is nice and classy in a Chinese-made Buck-homage way, but each Victorinox (okay, except for this one) is practically a multi-tool.

I use Victorinox quite a bit for food preparation while hiking and traveling, so it needs to be stainless, but LC200N (as amazing as it is) would make the knife much more expensive. If i spent a lot of time camping out in Florida swamps, I might get a Slysz Spydie Chef (drool), but for casual day hiking and short travels Victorinox steel is good enough.

      @@Euripides_Panz The typical pocket knife carrier is doing the same thing they have for decades, just a lot more of it. You didn't used to get a dozen Amazon boxes a week each with blister packaged items that are nearly hermetically sealed with 20 mil plastic. The 'super steels' are nice, but carry the caveat of needing special and pricy sharpening gear. But what was once a premium steel is coming down in price. 420c Bucks were great in the late 70's/early 80's, but now there's better Sandvik, D2, Spring D2, S30V that can go longer without losing an edge. Throw in G10 or Micarta scales, better centering, grinding and machining and it's no comparison. I get beating up on Victorinox steel on their larger knives that are actually intended to be a primary blade for serious cutting, but that's not what this is. This is going to be for light use for people who either don't do anything but maybe open an occasional envelope with their knives or just want an extra blade. The steel is fine for this application.
    The clip being too small, otoh, that's a problem. Though I guess if all you carry is your drivers license and a credit card and maybe a little cash (which you can kind of get away with given that insurance cards and such are digital these days), it'll be okay.
