  • Huey Lewis and the News are in the mood to celebrate, joking about their age as they prepare for the release of what is almost certainly their last album, titled "Weather." At 69, Lewis, who has performed in bands for most of his life, had no intention of slowing down, but his diagnosis of Meniere's Disease - a hearing disorder which has affected his voice - has made the decision for him. John Blackstone reports.

Meniers is a strange disease. It is often accompanied w debilitating vertigo. Often times there are fake noises that the ear is always hearing, like crunching leaves. So he doesn't have typical deafness. It often sounds like trying to hear through a broken speaker. So even if there is no actual hearing loss, the other sounds drown out what he can hear. But there are days, weeks...that the noises subside. Those are the days that he should take full advantage of, and go out and listen to everything he usually misses. Cutting the audio nerve is a potential cure for the maddening noise, but it will guarantee true deafness and may not eliminate the noise. People have become suicidal when it is really bad.

I've had Meniere's for over 25 years. It took me out of work and into early retirement. It's a very debilitating condition. I've lost a great deal of my hearing. The ringing is constant. The vertigo is episodic. It can fluctuate from mild to severe. Each day is different and you can never tell. There is no warning before an episode. Some days are so bad I'm spinning out of control and vomiting... can't even get out of bed. Thank goodness it's lessened somewhat over time. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Didn't know that. IMO "The News" is just as important as Huey Lewis for that "sound". Its kind of funny how at the time pop music was way into synth, new wave, all that stuff, here comes this guy singing 1950's harmony parts with sax and a brass section. Somehow they made those "uncool" things relevant and have a fresh sound.

I was a fan of their music because where I was employed at the time, we played FM radio music, while we worked. I was in my late 20s & early 30s when Huey Lewis was getting a lot of air time on the radio. Though at home, my musical interests via record albums & cassettes was Blues & Jazz saxophone, like David Sanborn, & Eddie Harris. I'd played "harp" (as in harmonica), in high school friend's bands,...and had an extensive blues harp album collection, too. Huey is as good a harp player, as any. I really dug that aspect of their music. ____Huey,....wishing you better days ahead.

I have Meniere's Disease, diagnosed about 8 years ago. Took the hearing in my right ear. The vertigo sucks because of the unpredictable nature of it. Here's the really fun part...it's 'believed to be' an autoimmune disorder. Auto immune diseases love the buddy system and now I have two. I was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis ( _another_ rare autoimmune disease) 6 years ago. Lightning can strike twice. And, I wasn't even going 88 mph at the time. Go figure. Moral of this story? You never know how much crap you can learn to live with, until you live though it.
I love Huey Lewis, and I wish my fellow rare disease buddy nothing but good things in his life and stabilization of his hearing and balance.

Wow. We are losing some of the most iconic musicians we know and love. A lot to father time. Retirement Elton John, and now forced retirement to Peter Frampton (a nerve disease) and now Huey Lewis. We just lost Neil Peart of Rush last week. This is sad. What makes this bad is that a musician and music lover can't listen to music. I love music more that almost anything. I can't imagine not being able to enjoy it.
