  • Join me as I take a step back in time in Wildwood New Jersey! In this video I explore and tour the historic doo-wop district featuring motels, diners, neon signs and more - Fabulous 1950's & 1960's historic architecture including flashy neon signs and futuristic, space-aged and retro vibes!
    Wildwood is crowned the doo-wop capital of the world and could have been the birthplace! As times are changing and with the modernization of architecture it is extremely important to preserve and document historical landmarks such as those that make up Wildwood's Doo-Wop Era.
    Birthplace of rock and roll, doo-wop, googie, populuxe, spage-age, retro architecture; as well as vintage neon signage.

    This video was awesome! Thank you so much for sharing some of the most iconic signs in Wildwood. It is truly my favorite place in the world to visit. I go every year in June and I look forward to driving up and down Atlantic and Ocean Avenues to look at the Doo Wop signs and architecture.

    I am 57. I have stayed at mostly two places in the Wildwoods since 1971. The Crusader and the Carribean.
    I have stayed at around 8 different places in total in the Wildwoods since 1971.
    I have visited the Wildwoods about 62 times with the Crusader being not only the place that I stayed at the most but also my favorite even today.
    My only complaint about the island is the excessive condo building which is a big reason why so many Doo Wop motels are now gone. I miss those days when a 10 year old kid could play shuffle board, swim in a pool and walk on to the boardwalk with a bud or two and without parents on vacation with you 24/7.
    Great video!

      Thx so much! Yeah it’s actually sad the redevelopment that is happening across most of the NJ shore areas- it’s becoming more Miami-esque…have you seen Long Branch lately? It’s literally become the Miami of NJ - I think I should probably do a video on that. Also, I did visit the wildwood boardwalk the weekend after Memorial Day this year and I decided not to record it. It gave me Atlantic City vibes and ppl just don’t seem that “happy” I guess. The boardwalk shops also kind of threw me off with a lot of them being “smoke/vape” shops. I think it’s not heading in a good direction. Again, thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!

    We used to stay at the Crusader and when to showed the Yankee Clipper I was hoping you would pan across the street to the Crusader. First visit was in August of 1980. Wildwood Crest has really changed over the years with all the new condos and hotels. Life seemed so much simpler and happier back then.

    • @explore.evermore
      @explore.evermore  15 дней назад

      Exactly! I think there was construction or a cleaning crew at the Crusader when I was filming. I plan on doing a part 2 that would include the rest of the motels and hotels. I totally agree it was different back then. I attempted to film a video of the wildwood boardwalk this year but scrapped the footage because people just seemed unhappy and there was alot of police presence after the Memorial Day weekend incident. I usually like filming “happy” things for you guys to see and it just seemed a bit dull and odd. I will definitely try to get more footage of wildwood in general before they complete redevelop it. Thx so much for watching!

    The Doo-Wop Experience used to be a diner. I ate dinner there once in 1988 or 89. It was on Ocean Av near The Caribbean and was disassembled, moved and put back together. I remember seeing somewhere that it was constructed in 1962.

      Wow! That’s a really neat memory! Wildwood used to be amazing and it still is in many ways. Unfortunately they have some issues with the younger crowd and some people think it’s not heading in a good direction. This is why I’m attempting to document and preserve a lot of the retro stuff!

    How cool 😮. I've only been briefly through Wildwood twice on the way to Cape May. I didn't know the Wildwood sign actually lights up at night as well. Nice share. 👍🏾💯☺️💖

    It looks like a lot of the motels were built with the same design or very similar design. I wonder if they were built by the same builders.

    • @explore.evermore
      @explore.evermore  Месяц назад +1

      I think a lot of them were! One of the names that comes to mind are the Morey Brothers, who actually built the first motel in Wildwood. Most of the ones I tried to capture were the earliest builds. There are many more motels there as well, these are the ones that I thought were the most “doo-wop’y” in architecture! (Morey, as in Morey’s Piers!) Thanks for watching !!

    Childhood is way too crowded, some rentals don't even have a yard because a small house is split into 2.im not a trouble maker but the police are always on a war footing and not very nice.other than that it's not that bad.

    • @explore.evermore
      @explore.evermore  2 месяца назад

      Wow! I haven’t actually vacationed in wildwood since I was a teenager and I remember it being super crowded back then also! Yeah it’s a huge attraction and it is the largest beach so that’s why people flock there. It’s definitely going through modernization as well which is why I wanted to capture as many of these retro motels as I could. I remember going down a year ago and when I went back this year, a few of the older buildings were already demolished….(actually I planned on doing a Memorial Day weekend video showing how crowded it gets, hopefully I’ll get to do that!)
