  • Full suspension or hardtail, which is better? Or is there even a better bike? Neil and Blake find some properly rough trails around Fort William and see if the hardtail can keep up.

Blake loves his hardtail, but Neil is a little sceptical. On rough trails, though, does Neil have the right idea with his high-end full sums, or is Blake’s purist approach the way to go?

although gotta say the bike related gear eats up so much money, it's kinda badly equipped rider on a full sus or well equipped on HT that is often the case. People sometimes buy a full sus and don't have a shock pump on day one, cause of "economy" reasons....

Blake said it: on hardtail you are closely to the limits, so sometimes it pushes you out of comfort zone. But trail I've tried, fullsus feels boring quite often. Therefore HT is for me more fun.

I have a $350.00 ALDI/Polygon manufactured 29er hard tail 120mm Suntour, all alloy, discs and Acera 2x9 group set. I didn't want to spend $2500.00 on something I might not like doing, that was almost 12months ago. I have got my moneys worth 100x over. I ride with a group that have full carbon $6-10k and I do a pretty good job at mixing with then on the downhill and flowy twisties. Admittedly the up hill climbs I struggled, but less now. Only cost has been for a new seat post and a set of clippins. The important thing is to have fun.

BUT I actually want to have a hardtail for winter because it's easier to maintain and you can learn important skills like line choice and smooth riding which will make your riding on the fullsus even better.

Everybody here is going for hardtail. I have had both and am just a casual rider, don't have loads of time to practice and get really great at riding. I just want to go fast as I can downhill for the thrills. When I sold my hardtail and got a full suspension, all of the sudden I could go so much faster and have way more fun on the same trails for not too much more money (mine used cost around 900). Totally worth it in my case.

      @Hector55Munoz 3 года назад +8

@@Alkize06 Even if the hardtail was heavier, it has a solid rear end which translates more energy into the rear wheel from each pedal stroke. That's why they're faster. With the rear suspension, some energy is lost due to the softness of the strut. That's with rebound pumping back up and the initial load. There are a few different factors but it's even true with hard suspension sports cars. There's a sweet spot with adjustment, so even the same car will acceleration faster with a harder suspension setup.

Most of what I've ridden on my HT has been rooty forest trails. Took a little time to get used to how jittery the bike can get, but it definitely feels well within the HT's capabilities. However, this weekend my buddies and I went on the road to ride at a mountain park where the trails are very rocky (many places similar to 4:17). About 800 feet in elevation change and one long 3 mile descent trail. Everyone in my group rides full sus. I gotta say that this was the first time where I felt like I was starting to push the limits of my bike. My bike is a XC setup, and anytime the rock got loose on the trail the whole bike started getting squirrely. I could handle climbing up and over rocks better than descending them, I think. Honestly, the biggest problem apart from bike control was the punishment on my arms. That long descent was literally the first time I've ever had to stop on a DOWNHILL simply because my arms were cramping up and I couldn't hold on to the bars anymore.
Either way, there's no denying that a full squish is going to have the upper hand on that kind of terrain. It was a real eye opener, but I don't think I'm going to get rid of my HT --- out of the dozen or so trail systems that I've rode, only two of them have really felt like they were bordering on being out of my bike's league. Besides, my HT always obliterates those full squishes on climbs :)

I just love the simplicity and speed that you get on a hardtail. I regularly go on 60k+ rides with big climbs so I don't want to waste energy by compressing my rear suspension. I do however also really enjoy trail riding, and with the aggressive geometry a HT can handle all the trails in my Region. I'm also a student so I have limited emounts of money and a HT is just cheaper than a full sus

For just under a grand, I found I got a lot of bike for the money, and plenty of smiles per gallon! Really enjoying it and thought it was the perfect entry level bike to get me going.
Full sus was just too much of a change for me, it feels completely different and unnatural after riding road bikes for the last 18 years, but I’ll maybe consider one for my next purchase!

Right now i'm at a place in life where I can only have one bike. I decided to go with a hardtail for the versatility. It has 120mm of travel, XT kit, and 2.4 29in tires, so it can handle all but the roughest singletrack. But it's also super efficient and comfy while exploring fireroads at a state park. Or riding some local bike paths for a workout. One day i'll have a full sus trail rig, but for the time being it's my do-it-all bike.

I demmoed a Stumpjumper today, a Whyte not so long ago, on the trails around here and my skill level I felt the bits where I'd normally be popping a rock or small lump they just soaked it up, proper jumps I don't yet do.
So faster, but less fun for me.
I also tried an electric bike, turned it to 11 and with so much more engery in the arms and legs once I hit the downhills it was insanely fun!
Even the climbs became a hoot, constant switchbacks became a hill climb race with straights and hairpins

I have fun on both, but it mainly depends on where I am riding. Trail centres, I'll usually ride the full sus, but on my local trails, where I have more climbs, less extreme downhills, more XC, and the occaisonal road link.....the HT is hands down the bike i woudl rather be on.
I've never found a trail I cant tackle on either bike. The way I ride the trail may be different, but the limiter is rider skill not the bike.
But who cares, fun is subjective, ride what you want, neither is better or worse, they are different.

Last year I jumped from was at the time a nice hard tail 26 to a full suspension 27.5+. I bought the bike with a 29” and a 27.5+ wheelset. Used the 29’s once and haven’t used them since. The full suspension 27.5+ is like skiing powder all day. I’ve never had so much fun on a bike. It is faster, smoother, safer, grippier, just flat out better. There is no question in my mind

I'm gonna do a progression video in a year or so. Got the idea from another youtuber who filmed his jump progression over 2 years.
You guys have given me so much advice with your videos. I still can't hold a wheelie for that long but I'm learning. Got loads to look forward to!

Demoed a full sus last weekend in the trail park - plush, quiet, poppy and awful climbing. Felt in control, stable and felt like i could push it a lot. Now, riding the same trails on my hardtail is a game of chicken with the trees, every descent an intense experience interspersed with moments of sheer terror and the climbing is tons better. Loved both and if i had the moneys i'd have full sus and ht days.

I was just thinking the same thing. But once I watched what they do with these bikes. I started to grasp the idea around having high end equipment! I mean have u seen the speed and all the obstacles that they are zipping by? Just think about what might happen if ur fork or stem breaks. Or even a chain breaking could send u overboard! Equipment malfunction on a dirt bike, in u can probably ride it out or at the worst come sliding down the side of a jump. Obviously has its room and places of danger as well. But if something critical breaks on ur mtb, you're quite possibly getting tossed down a steep cliff, big hill and or eating bark off a tree with your face! This is a huge liability thing, the company has its name on the product that fails. So the rigorous testing and QC is at a much higher level than that of a dirt bike. Now I've seen some mtbs over $10,000! Tbh idt after u pass that 5to6 grand mark. That u are getting what u pay for, I believe the cost is more than the reward. Which usually relates to weight. Anything that can shave a few grams or pounds off of ur bike has got to be a very strong material bcuz ur thinning out the metal or going for a composite or carbon fiber etc etc. That's only my opinion. At face value it's absolutely unbelievable that there's bikes out there for over 2k and people are glad to pay it for reasons. I hope they come with a tracking/security device of some sort! Anyone who knows what that bike is and is shady, will look at that bike as an easy payday. I wonder if you can get insurance on it? 🤔

  • @1011-s7d

Trails near me are mountainous so 18 of my 20 years of riding has been on a HT (26 and 29). Personal opinion here but I think a HT really teaches you some finer points re' handling and control that you don't get with a FS. It's too easy to bulldog your way through with FS. Have yet to match the difficulty of trails on my FS though. That said, for control I have to go with my FS (27 five), zipping around the corners I can dip the bars with ease and the control I feel is noticeable. But... HT is lighter, quicker, great for exploring, long distance, bushwhacking, and of course climbing. Wouldn't want to give up either as they both have their place.
Another plus with the HT is it's easier to clean! ...a daily after ride ritual.

I've been running a beginner Trek hardtail for a couple of years and just built a full-suspension Santa Cruz bike. The older hardtail has a bottom-barrel Suntour XCM fork that just doesn't soak up any of the rock gardens and it's of the old standard (non-tapered) so I can't replace it with something nice; it also has very upright geometry not conducive to stability at speed. Maybe down the road I'll get a "nice" hardtail but seems like a moot point with my current short-travel full suspension.

I'm riding a Tallboy right now myself. Great bike, but when I want to go fast on buff singletrack, my Cube Reaction hardtail is the weapon of choice. Then I keep an old GT single speed around for crappy trail conditions riding. I recently upgraded the fork (1 1/8" non tapered) on the GT to a Rockshox Recon Silver. Made a real difference to the ride quality.

Javi Can’t go wrong with a hardtail, especially that Meta HT. Unless you want to enter a race with it. Just do the usual checks for dents and weld conditions (for metals obviously) and you’ll be fine. For a 2nd hand full squish, too much to check for. Haha maybe I’m just lazy. 😂
