Hey, thank you for the explanation on these. It's pretty much easy to figure out hot to install the adapters, but great to see your breakdown of how to do it correctly.
Left a comment on a 2 year old video and you answered with a “how to” video - you’re awesome! Thanks for the vid, the bontrager kit was what I was missing. Take care.
I liked having a back rack and I changed the saddle to a brooks saddle but really depends on your use case honestly. I am also a big fan of Schwabe Marathon Plus tires. So many less puncture issues.
Thank you I will look at tires and saddle as I am all about the comfort, mine is coming with a rear rack as it was more cost effective with that already on. Many thanks for taking the time to reply! 👍
OK, I'll give you credit for a very helpful video. I was even surprised to find one! However, I have a 7.7FX, which also has the iso-zone grip, and the installation is not as easy as the FX3. On the 7.7, the white foam piece under the grip has to be cut off by approx 3/4" in order for the black metal adapter to be inserted far enough. After that, the handle bar grip needs to be moved approx 1.25" towards the center of the bar in order for the bar end to have enough handle bar available to be attached. This requires that the brake and speed shift mechanisms also need to be moved. Hopefully you are able to follow my explanation without a video. ;-) Thanks again!
i had this problem once working for a bike shop. it led to an argument, i didn't want to let the customer have the bar ends over the isozone pad because i though it dangerous but the other guys just wanted to sell the bike. it got a bit heated and i got a reprimand from my manager for telling the customer "i don't care, you can't do this" or something to that effect. we didn't know there's a kit for the bar end. a decade later a video about it shows up in the recommended section. the more you know.
It's linked in the description. Here it is again: www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/equipment/bike-accessories/bike-handlebar-accessories/bontrager-satellite-plus-isozone-bar-end-adapter/p/11155/?colorCode=black
Do you need the adapter kit for installation of the Ergon GP4 or GP5 grips? These grips have the bar end pre-included with their own bar end plugs, so I assume not? Please help!
Thank you so much for this video. Thought it was impossible to put bar end on my Trek fx3. Indeed, just need a kit! Thx! But why is there such a special profile? The iso thing is a bit weird.
I believe their latest version is like this: www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/equipment/cycling-components/bike-handlebar-grips-tape/bike-handlebar-grips/bontrager-satellite-isozone-grip-set/p/14247/
Great video... I was thinking about getting the "Chim Chim" bar ends (By Paul Component Engineering). They are closed off on one side, so the handlebar wouldn't/couldn't actually protrude out of the other side. Would these bar end adapter work with this still you think? They seem to have a lip on the end of them so idk if thatd work. Sorry for the long random technical question...
Hey Brad, great vid. I have 2020's FX2 and had to replace my factor grips with the Satellite Isozone City Grip which is also a lock-on. I also have the Profile Design Boxer Bar End but I never had to get the Bontrager adapter kit; I just used the plugs that came with the bar ends. Am I doing it right??
I suppose it kind of depends on your bars. When you took the old grips off and replaced them, some bars are slotted and only have a plastic piece in the end which isn't sturdy enough to adequately hold the bar ends. However, your bars may be different. If that bar end is clamped around metal, and the grips fit ok, then you should be fine.
Well I guess that depends on what kind of mirror you want. If you want the type that goes into the end of the Trek handlebars then it would not work. If you wanted to mount it in the end of the bar end (up toward the top), there is a removable plastic plug there. Otherwise you would have to choose a mirror that was more of the clamp style.
I’ve used mirrors similar to this on trekking bars and bar ends... depending on how long and curved the bar ends are… You may be able to live with the sacrifice of real estate. m.lightinthebox.com/p/bike-mirror-anti-shake-damping-360-rotating-stability-cycling-glasses-stainless-black-sliver-silver-black-blue-black_p6953981.html?currency=USD&litb_from=paid_adwords_shopping&sku=1_7768&country_code=us&adword_mt=&adword_ct=378654421122&adword_kw=&adword_pos=&adword_pl=&adword_net=u&adword_tar=&adw_src_id=2907233386_6456219275_77252807437_pla-888859464144&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlOOT05-e6QIVhYbACh3PCQGTEAQYCiABEgKJVfD_BwE
Thanks for your video. I’m actually searching for a solution to the awful grips that came with my fx3. After a few years they have started disintegrating into a horrible, sticky, messy goo. It’s revolting!! What were Bontrager thinking or did they just not bother testing? The grips are sticky and this material transfers to my hands and accumulates into small rubber like balls which have gotten in my eyes and covered the screen of my smart phone in a layer of gunk. It’s just disgusting. Is it toxic? The handlebars have a weird end so not many accessories fit them, mirrors for example. Bike shops have suggested replacing my handlebars but I’d prefer to keep the cost down. I urgently need to replace the grips but I don’t have many options due to the weird shape of the ends of the handlebars. I absolutely don’t want to buy more Bontrager grips and reward them financially for their disgusting product!! Have other manufacturers offered solutions to these awful grips?
@@BradBeaird Those handlebars are just too weird! How can you even describe those handlebars to a website when shopping for grips?? Bontrager are trying to trap you into buying their second rate, terrible grips!!!
You show a spacer that appears to be about a half inch bigger that what you put in the link for the spacer kit. I looked at the kit and the spacer is not that long. I have a 2020 FX 3. My handle bars appear slightly different as well.
How do you like your other surly handlebars I'm looking at Jones bars or surly why did you decide to use surly Been enjoying all your videos thanks for so many of them.
Hey Jason. I have the benefit of having both the Moloko's and the Jones bars. Of the two, I think I like the jones bars better. Part of that has to do with the sweep on the Jones being a little greater and the other is that I bought the Jones with a 2.5 rise and I like the position of that on my ECR. The Moloko bars have been better than stock bars on the Trek I think though.

Very helpful thank you!
You are welcome!
I am only just about to get my fx 3, could I ask is there any other upgrades you may recommend?

This helped me massively prep for getting my fx3 ready for a tour around Spain, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I have an FX4. I am very fascinated by this feature. I like the flat bars but i wish for more speed! This could definitely help. I may try this!
I am a big fan!

Thank you! I just picked up a 2022 FX 3 and really want some bar ends on there
I just bought Bar ends today for my hybrid straight bars! But I put my down in the road bike position!
I’ve seen a few done this way before. Hope it works well for you!
Is that to hold the bars like a road bike position?
Trek makes a good product . Nice instructional video thanks .
Thanks!
Thanks 👍 Captain Bob

The best invention,, bar ends...
Pretty nice
could you also add a bontager mirror with the bar ends?
Good question. I’m not familiar with that particular mirror.
Thank you for the video. Can't find the bontrager kit. Could you help me out?

You shouldn’t need the adapter kit for Ergon grips.
Sir did you cut a little bit of the white rubber piece in order to fit the adapters ?🙂
No, just moved them in a bit.
Thank you 😀👍
can I then install the trek miracycle mirror into the end of the left side of the handlebar? I assume the spacer & bar end don't interfere?
I think it would work, but I've not tried that mirror specifically.
How can I find your video of wrapping bar ends?
ruclips.net/video/Vfp5H2aDLq4/видео.html
My Trex FX3 bar end kit came with the long white pieces. Do you install them? It looks like your handle bar alresdy has them installed.
Thank you for the video. Does anyone know how they compare to Ergon GP5?
Cool thank you
You are welcome!
I have grips but a solid piece inside it, so it doesn't scoot in, what should I do?
can the ergo brand extenders work with the Trek bars?
What diameter bar ends will I be able to use with the adaptors? I see a lot of bar ends are 22.2mm (7/8”)
7/8" - 22mm diameter

No idea just something Trek did I suppose.
Thanks, really great review..
I bought Ergon GP4 for FX3, I tried adjusting and it loosen, I guess it dont fit it my fx3 nicely
Hi, great video, thinking of setting these up on my FX3 too! Would you know if i still need the bar end adaptors for the 2020 FX3 model? thank you
I've not seen the 2020 FX3 handlebars so I am unsure.
@@BradBeaird No worries, thanks for the response!
@@amanpreetrayat41 Yes, you still need the kit.

What bar did you install on your FX3? Is it wider than the stock bar?
I installed Surly Moloko bars. They might be a bit wider, I’m not sure actually.

There is a lip on the end of the Trek bar end adapter.
@@BradBeaird I thought so,, thanks for the quick response.
Thanks for this video. Is there any way to tell if bar ends are compatible with the FX3? The ones mentioned are not available where I live.
I'm not aware of any other options from bar end manufacturers.
How do I remove them?
Loosen the screws and they should come off.
@@BradBeaird what bar do you use on your fx3? Why did u replace it?
I would consider replacing it for higher end one, but not sire what’s out there
I currently have to Surly Moloko bars but mainly because I had an extra set laying around.

Fx 2 doesn't comes with a lock on grip, so in that case should we need to cut the grip in order to place those bar ends
You should be able to move the grip in on the bars. I would never cut grips.
Are those adapters you used metal? I went to my local trek store and they sold me a pair of adapters that were plastic.
The ones they sent me were metal.
Brad Beaird thanks for the reply, I’m going to just order the whole kit from the trek website.

I solved the problem by switching out the bars to a Whiskey carbon I swear Trek thinks everyone is 5’5 with a 10inch chest.
Haha yeah I switched to some Moloko bars as well but had these on the wall and a view was asking the process.
