- It is our privilege to film this beautiful Chado ceremony, which has been an important inspiration for TEALEAVES since our founding in 1994. We gratefully thank our friends Kazue Kojima, June Yoriko Tanemura, and Yasuko Takahashi who all practice the Japanese Way of Tea in Vancouver.

Some people said they'd like to know more about what is going on.
The tea house itself is important in terms of how it's built to complement the place where it is. If it's urban, does it help the visitor take a step away from the hustle and bustle? If it's near nature, it should complement and enhance the nature and be set in such a way to see it best. The door to the tea house is often low so that all people, highborn and lowborn, have to bow to enter. It is an equalizer.
There are several schools of tea ceremony and some are more formal than others, but in all cases, it's important to enjoy the SEASON. The person doing the tea ceremony and the people attending will all be paying attention to things like which kimono they pick, the colors, the artwork (like the scroll and the flower arrangement you see in the beginning)---each might be indicative of what season it is outside. Even the bowl for the tea might have some thought to the season....a deeper bowl in winter to keep the tea hot, a shallower one in summer, for example. A kimono with hydrangeas, for example, would refer to June when it's rainy season and the hydrangeas are blooming.
Second, the movements are all very prescribed and exact, but they shouldn't look difficult. They should help us see grace and beauty in simple things like the way his or her hand moves, the elegance of form in doing each step, the purposefulness of each simple act....heating the cup, measuring the tea, stirring the tea, etc.
Third, whether silent or whether there is discussion during the ceremony, it's about relationship. The server is wanting the guests to enjoy the tea and the experience, and the guests can express appreciation for the experience. There's a part where the guest picks up the tea cup / bowl and simply looks at the workmanship to enjoy it, turning the cup around.
Tea ceremony is also hugely about the five senses. Visually of course, but also those little sounds....the snap of the tea cloth, the water pouring, the click of the tea whisk, the sound of slurping the tea (polite, by the way), the birds outside....the taste of the hot and bitter tea served with a small sweet to balance the taste....all to remind us that we are here NOW in this moment, that nothing else is paramount, that life is fleeting, that this moment is to be appreciated.
If you go to a tea ceremony, don't fret overmuch about knowing all the rules -- try instead to step into the moment and appreciate it as a gift.
My cat keeps looking for the birds haha
This was so beautiful, I almost forgot to drink my coffee.
Whenever I feel stressed or anxious, I come to this video. So relaxing...
This is gorgeous. Their movements are so fluid and graceful. The whole setting is so simple and elegant.
I’d love to hear the history and symbolism behind this explained.
You should look it up! I bet there's a lot about it online. Look up "Chado", The Way of Tea. Well, it's translated "Way" but it really has a lot more meaning to it. It's an art form, it has spiritual, emotional, mental, social, historical, and physical significance.
I don't know much about it but what I have learned about it is super cool so definitely take some time to research it.
Some random guy: Hey you two I’m bored wanna make a crazy intense and pin point detailed way to make tea?
Random guy 2: wh-
Random guy 3: YES
Clearly they're being paid by the hour and not by the cup, must be a union gig.
I believe it's like a form of zen meditation. If I'm correct, the movements are (instead of any inherent symbolism) about showing proper formalized appreciation for the effort put forth by your host to provide the perfect experience.
Passing the cleaned instruments to the guests, letting them inspect and appreciate how they have been cleaned; Selecting the proper seasonal flower to inspire the chosen mood; arranging the tea setup further away in the Summer to that the heat does not bother the guests... And the guests are taking the appropriate time to observe and appreciate all of the hosts carefully selected touches.
This is what I love about Japan, such ties to the old world as well as the new, and so many beautiful ceremonies like this to watch
the gracefulness in restraint, the beauty in empty space, a moment of the commonplace elevated to sublime art, the western world so often is too loud to hear the music in silence. thank you for the beautiful gift of this ceremony
I thinkmit's not about the tea, but the meditative peace the ritual provides. We once saw a demonstration in the Japanese tea huose in Munich and were impressed. Here I missed the soft small talk of the host and guest (there was a bit but it was silent); it made such a pleasing contrast with the formality of the ritual.
This was beautiful and mezmerizing to watch. It does not at all seem like the ceremony was almost a half hour long! I've seen people complain and poke fun at how long it takes to make tea, but this video shows that it is not just about making tea. It is about enjoying tea and life and connecting with what is important.
absolutely! i loved watching them respect every moment of being in the space. from entering the room, to moving intentionally and carefully, as well as how they appreciated each person. it's a beautiful art and refreshing to see in comparison to Western culture.
綺麗なお点前は、心が落ち着きます。。

I wish there was someone to explain step-by-step what's going on. It is obviously a beautiful ceremony but I don't understand what's going on.

I love how patient and graceful they are. If it was just me I would just dump the green tea powder in my cup lol
this is almost like performance art
This is absolutely fascinating and beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I only just recently learned of this tradition. I wonder is there a way to experience such an amazing thing as a spectator, or even a completely ignorant participant without offending or intruding on a great tradition?
Jaydoggy531 Thank you for your kind words! Please look out for our upcoming articles to be released on folio.tealeaves.com. We will be providing more information about this beautiful practice and the way that you can bring this philosophy to your own home.
In addition, to experience the Chado Ceremony in person, we suggest looking into the Urasenke Foundation and their overseas branches! www.urasenke.or.jp/texte/world/branches_associations.html
Can I have a cup of tea please ? (6 hours later) thank you.
+natshenkin JUST SIT DOWN AND DRINK YOUR GODDAMN TEA
***** Joke
noun
'a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline'
+natshenkin depends on the kind of cuo of tea you are wishing and waiting for...hahahah;)
That was a right of passage. Almost like Grand mother, Mother, Grand daughter. Grand daughter got the seal of approval. Very beautiful ceremony.
Is what it is...A CEREMONY. every step, every movement, every action, all count.
The patience 😳! I felt bad for the second girl having to wait for her tea until the first girl finished hers. Idk if I could be this graceful and patient.
This is so peaceful..I can sleep right now.
I am not sure why but I broke into tears watching this, it's almost spiritual. Beautiful.
Beautiful Video, the best part is the quietness! As well as the entire ceremony itself. I really hope they will produce MORE of these ceremonies in the future, perhaps different ones with the change of each season!

I think the ceremony of our generation will accompany pop music along with tea spills everywhere.
This is beautiful, an amazing traditional art. Every slow movement is relaxing and I smiled through this whole expeince. 😊
What kind of a bird is singing in the background? I don't recognize the song.
Not sure what is scarier. Having tea with the Queen of England or making a mistake in the ceremony?
I'm sure that old Lizzie is a kind woman, but I'm afraid to even break a sweat in this ceremony. I have a feeling that they would shout "YOU BRING DISHONOR TO FAMILY" to me just for scratching my face
Feels like the stress of doing a live dance performance.
LOL. no need to be stiff. Every movement in the caremony have the meaning that you have to learn. Many caremony like this was create to have us learn how to focus and have peace of mind.
hahahahahahah
Having tea with Vladimir Putin
Starbucks lines in Japan must move very slowly.
Beautiful tradition.
The simple task of drinking tea elevated to an art form and meditation. Its a beautiful, fascinating experience that brings focus and awareness to what’s happening right now.

the ponderous and hyper-deferential nature of it might make some people impatient, but i think this looks very relaxing.
There is perhaps no system or tradition I have witnessed as beautiful as chado. I very much wish to one day become learned in this art.
This was very nice. The almost absolute silence throughout is essential.
Watching everything being done so quietly and meticulously has an amazing calming effect on me.
an absolutely beautiful ceremony on so many levels.
watching this has motivated me to clean my house and make my matcha tea!
We love to hear that! Matcha is one of our favourites. Check out our matcha collection on the TEALEAVES website: www.tealeaves.com/search?q=matcha*&type=product and read more about the Chado Tea Ceremony here: www.tealeaves.com/pages/chado-japanese-tea-ceremony
This is so beautiful... I feel really relaxed watching this. And matched with those gorgeous kimono makes the scene much more visually pleasing.
RUclips which recommends this video to me after the tea ceremony in season 5 of Samurai Jack. Well done algorithm, well done
Wow. So different than any other art
I love matcha tea,..this ceremony seems, almost holy a very beautiful elegant thing
This ceremony calms your soul, very soothing and theme is like amazing morning dew that poured into drought. Thanks so much this. I feel relaxed now for the bedtime!

Amazing! I love matcha!❤️
Beautiful and peaceful. Thank you.
Graceful and beautiful. Its really a soothing time not only tea time.
I so enjoy this video, thanks!
I loved this video not only did it help me relax but it also showed me some Japanese culture now I can't wait to learn more
Even that bird seemed to hit its notes right on cue. It's like a story you'd have to go back to over and over.
I am studying Japanese tea ceremony and this video is very helpful. I have learned many things from watching these ladies. thank you!
Qué hermoso y el canto de las aves, muy bello
I liked the bit where she made the tea.
So beautiful. I live watching the tea ceremony. Such art. What pose. I'd love to have the opportunity to study the at of tea. :-)
Oh really? How interesting. I will have to remember to read more about them. I didn't know they took the tea ceremony so seriously, but it shouldn't surprise me. :-) thank you for informing me.
Charlotte Hawkins the tea ceremony is a discipline which many dedicate their lives to
Pure ASMR. Both instructive and relaxing.
The one thing I've taken from Japanese culture is taking off my shoes at the entrance when I get home.
Same here. They converted me.
I find the tea ceremony to be incredibly fascinating, I want to try this someday
Beauty and kindness. It would be lovely to see again with movements and hierarchy explained.
This is so relaxing to watch 🙂
It is sublime and peaceful
The birds were such wonderful, natural background music :)
Beautiful ceremony. Thanks for posting!:)
Came for the tea...stayed for the bird noises
Beautiful ceremony .
wonderful! thank you!
I love ! I just love !!! thank you T T
I wish people practicing Omotesenke would also make more videos like this one, clear, pleasant to watch and understandable enough to study...
Stunning😍🇯🇵❤️
Beautiful :)
Atención plena. Mindfulness. Qué linda tradición.
I feel like they will all break down in tears if I make 1 wrong step.
Amazing.true patience
how graceful
Love and respect to Japan. 🙏
Oddly satisfying and hypnotizing.
The beautiful birdsong accompanies the tea ceremony perfectly.

I’ve been watching TV ceremonies now for about a year. This is by far the best one thank you very much
Thank you for your comment, we are so pleased to hear you enjoyed the video! If you enjoy tea rituals you may be interested in our latest exploration: ruclips.net/video/SmnocFAnzT8/видео.html
It's all about awareness of the feelings (touch, smell, hear, taste), appreciating the moment, the making, the respect for the day to day objects. It's all about enjoying life in the most literal way. How crazy and lost and confused you drink your coffee at Starbucks while in social media? Now who's the freak?
If you feel better during tea ceremony it doesn't mean others can enjoy their cup in Starbucks. Your comparison is irrelevant
Artful & precise! I’ve my Matcha startup up set. Followed the ceremony. Did some shortcuts & surely I enjoyed my tea. Love from NY.

hmmm. Did not show where the white cup went to after drinking from it. I'm curious as to the proper way of returning it since they did not show it here.
The Chinese first invented the tea ceremony. In Chinese 茶道 is
cha dao (lit. tea way, the way of tea). Interesting to learn that in
Japanese its "Sadō" which appears to be a transliteration of the Chinese
term??? :-)
我不認為中華有茶道。不管陸羽茶經及大觀茶論,所談郝是那個茶產他的茶好,那邊水好,如何把茶泡好。極為實際。
so relaxing
That bird's song💕
That looks really soothing. I wonder how offended they would be if I took a nap at one of those.
Adorable ~Excellence♡
nice video...brings back memories of when I did this.
if you ever make another video, hearing the sounds inside would be nice....I always loved the sounds of bubbling water over the fire...wood ladle thunking on metal....and the shakshakshak of the brush in the bowl.
Beautiful! Thank you so much on sharing this with us! Namaste
You are so very welcome. If you are interested in more of our films on tea culture, you may enjoy our film on Chadō here:ruclips.net/video/SmnocFAnzT8/видео.html
I thought the older woman would receive the first cup of tea but maybe the first one received because she entered the room first. I wonder how many times per day is this tea served in Japan. Also that object that they were caring I wonder what it's purpose was. The kimonos that they were wearing are just works of art! Very pleasant and interesting video!
Wonderful to watch!
Domo Arigato Goziemashita.
Sa tuwing pinapanood ko ito, mabilis akong antukin.
I enjoyed watching this video. Thx for sharing.

This passed the vibe check.
Very beautiful
Gorgeous
Thank you!
Einfach wunderschön :)
Zeremonien haben etwas erhabenes an sich
I've tried matcha tea didn't really like it , but if it was presented this way it will make me appreciate more and enjoy it more
RELAX...
When the lady in pink (server?) enters the room, what is she placing on the ground as she move?
beautiful and educational
Wow, so relaxing and nice. It could be an ASMR video. Thank you
Thank you for this lovely video! I’ve begun studying the history of japan in college this year and I’ve just learned about the tea ceremony and how it developed, so it was so cool to see it in action! Could you recommend some other resources where I could learn about this ceremony? Many sources I’ve seen are from a USA perspective and don’t give much information on the actual steps of the process
This video is missing some content. The square dish and the white tea cup disappeared suddenly.
Gorgeous ceremony, tho.
even after over 25 years studying Tea i still do not like the preparation of a Chaji, i like the Chakai though, it is more impromptu and cheerful, but Chaji's preparations are really tedious especially for a Yobanashi (my favorite) or an Akatsuki, I don't even want to consider the preparation or a Hatsugama or a Shoburo .
But i really enjoy the process of cleaning and all that comes after the Chakai or chaji in the mizuya (which is my favorite room ) . Drying the kettle, washing and drying the bowls , cleaning the tea containers the Kensui, wiping the Tea spoon and storing it , collecting the remaining of matcha powder , washing the Chakin and Hibashi and make sure the Fukusa is spotless , and when all this done and the Mizuya and the Chashitsu are perfectly clean i prepare to myself a very simple bowl of Matcha in my old faithful Mino deep black chawan i eat ALL, the remaining of Wagashi !
Um...
natshenkin ??
olafursson kyllian where are you studying?
natshenkin 🤣🤣 exactly
You sound very pretentious
Does anybody know if they can drink the tea at the same time ?
