People ask me all the time also "How do you have so MANY nice things?". I was a single Mom of 5 for over 10 years and I MADE a lot of the things that we had. I baked our bread, I made our mayonnaise, had chickens for the eggs, organic garden and fed all the weeds and waste back to those chickens. I sewed a lot of our clothes, I made our yogurt and peanut butter, I refinished furniture. I am now 71 and I still have a cabinet in my bedroom that houses my beauty products and hair stuff, it was once a Care Bear Fridge for my little ones. I repainted it and it STILL remains and is cute with ivy stenciling all over it on a light green. My husband and I (he is now deceased) are both the last members of our families, so we inherited a lot of furniture, Fiesta Wear bowls, crystal. My cast iron was my grandmother's, then my Mom's and now mine. We even have a corn bread cast iron that makes the bread into little ears of corn, lol. If you care for things, they last. As for Thrifting! I lost a job once because I was sooo good at thrifting, lol. I bought 3 mink coats from an estate sale for $500. I sold the stole for $200, the jacket for $350, made $50 and a free full length mink. Then I bought an antique silk velvet peplum jacket at a sidewalk sale, and a silk crepe full length skirt at Goodwill. I had to go to a black tie affair with my boss and I wore this outfit. His wife took one look at me and got really angry, "THIS is your single MOM secretary!?!" Anyway, I was fired the next day. You have to keep your eyes and brain open for opportunities and God is generous. I got a better job with higher pay, better benefits and a nicer boss as a result of this, so never look at a closed door so long that you miss the open window!
This comment was absolutely fascinating, I loved reading this! What a life you have lived and stories you have to share! Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful comment and experience.
I don’t often have time to comment. But thank you for all that you do. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about your sweet reply when I was in desperate need of practical, biblical guidance. So thankful you’re here and drawing people nearer to God by sharing your own personal story. You are probably the epitome of resilient faith through hardship.❤
🙋♀️ Thrifter, sales, clearance racks, that's how we have nice things. I have a budget and I refuse to ever pay full price for anything. Finding cotton clothing can be tricky, but when i do and it's decently priced, I'm buying it up. Thankfully we have had a nice garden every year. Our garden is huge, and every year we try to give away whatever we have an abundance of. We very rarely have a dry summer. We moved here 3 summer's ago, and by the end of last summer, the deer discovered our garden and they raped it. Thankfully it was towards the end of harvesting season. We had to save money and put a fence up around it this year. I wish that one day we can have a big enough garden to provide other families with enough fresh veggies for the year. I pray that one day small communities are a thing again and we all start working together to provide for everyone.
I'm not even all the way through the video yet, but have to comment on how much I loved this devotional. I am going to make the word "poor" my next study in my Bible. Thank you, Shayla! I also really love baskets. 😁
You're right... God be for us, those who love the Lord! I adore thifting, even if I had a million! Right again, with Azure, too! It's the best shopping ever, and Hubby does the pickup for me... So grateful for you and the reminders 🎉❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for this video. I needed it, I felt like you spoke what I needed to hear. We have several issues with the homestead and vehicles and high prices. It's been a tough and depressing year. I need God to get me through the day! PS. I would love to meet your family one day! God Bless!
Hello Cynthia, I'm sorry to hear it's been like this for you. I and so many I know are going through the same. May God give you and us all peace. I hope you have a good week!
I loved your commenter saying " I dont believe in perimenopause. " I laughed pretty good, my first thought if you are a real woman, you don't have to believe in it, it totally believes in you!!! Just wait for all the beauty of perimenopause. I could not stop giggling...
What a lovely video! I always enjoy seeing your home as you work. I love your colors - so cozy & homey! You are a GREAT videographer - your images tell such great stories about your homemaking skills. And your sense of humor makes me smile - "Where did I put my baskets?" 😂 I'm also a fan of thrifting! Thanks for sharing your life with us! You are amazing!❤😊
Another great video! I am also a basket addict. 😂 My husband has learned to spot the basket aisle and help me steer clear of it. 😂 But thrifting them is so fun because they’re so inexpensive! I use them for everything. I much prefer them to those bright reusable bags or plastic totes.
Thank you, I really needed this this morning❤️ John 16:33 really helped me today, my little family has been having trouble financially and you gave me some encouragement🙏 love your vids, keep it up! 💐🌤 God bless you! 🥰
I am so sorry for all of the judgement you endure! I too am low income and absolutely love thrift stores and yard sales! I absolutely look forward to your videos. I feel understood! Keep being you and let the haters hate… even Jesus had haters so we are in good company! ❤️😊
Beautiful video & message. We have struggled over the past year with needing new appliances - we actually DO have the $ now to buy appliances when we need them instead of having to struggle, buy on time, or skimp. BUT what we have found is that the options are not there & what has been purchased is already malfunctioning. I have a stove that has not worked correctly since day one, 6 mos.ago. We have had a repair man here repeatedly & parts replaced since it still under warrantee. I have not been able to use my oven for over a month. We shopped for this stove for MONTHS, as we wanted a very basic-off-grid type model. I have a 2 yo refridgerator that freezes everything, a new microwave that runs when the door is OPENED & a 2 mos. old washing machine that has a wonky circuit board & won't start the load until you plug/unplug. NONE of these were cheap, but all of them are very basic without all the bells & whistles. I miss the days when you could work hard, save $, buy something once that was GOOD quality & have it last. I have been trying to be patient, understanding, tolerant, but it gets very hard when the tools you need to do your job are unreliable. &&&&&& we miss cookies - I have a grumpy family when there are no cookies baked! "Blessed are the poor in spirit"
Wait, your stove is STILL malfunctioning?! I am so sorry to hear that! It's true, it is so frustrating trying to purchase any appliances anymore. All of my fridges will freeze things at times too. Thank you for commenting. I always love your comments, Patty.
This video has so many helpful tips. I was trying to figure out how to freeze my cilantro. It doesn't seem to last very long in the refrigerator. I'm going to try your method. Thank you for sharing. I really appreciated your devotional. ❤ As always, I love your choice of music.
My garden produced nothing but weeds. I had 18 colored bell pepper plants, I got 1 red bell pepper smaller than golf ball. I am watching for sales and buying what I can as I can. I know that God is providing, I just have to do my part to see the blessings. My son doesn't over use the soap, my brother in law does. He lives with us and he used to wash the dishes, but would go through sooooo much soap. I switched to bar soap for the dishes, he hasn't washed a dish since and I have saved so much money, and my sanity because he didn't get the dishes clean.
Yes that soap thing😅 that was me today. My 5yr old loves to help wash the dishes and when I say no let me just say as soon as he sees that no one is paying attention he runs to the sink.
Oh my gosh I cackled when you showed where the baskets were 🤣🤣 I use a pump soap bottle for the kitchen dish soap but I still find myself using SO much of it just out of habit! I've delved into homemade soaps since watching your videos and I've just made a batch of SOLID dish soaps! I'm so excited to see how they've turned out once they're finished curing but I suspect it'll definitely force us to slow down on the dish soap use. Even if it doesn't, they were way cheaper to make than buying soap!
@@mountainmamashome I just looked up what the store bought solid dish soaps are made of and went with that and 0% super fatting! It looks like most online solid dish soaps are made from olive oil, and coconut oil is used for extra lather. I don't have olive oil so instead I made a 0% superfat rice bran oil soap and I'm letting it cure for a month. The key from what I've read is just no super fat but I have seen recipes where they add citric acid and stuff!
You are hilarious! I needed a laugh. John 16:33 is one of my favorite verses. Jesus suffered so why should I not suffer from time to time. It reminds me that He handled earth perfectly so I will strive to do it as best I can. Ty for reminding me of this today. Your home is beautiful. You have such a talent at decorating. Great job Shayla. Ty.
I know this is not a new idea, but perhaps you could reroute your gray water to a holding tank to water your garden. Of course, not from your toilets, but the sinks, washing machine, etc. Be Bless!
We ADHD ladies love our baskets! My husband is always saying that my thrifted basket habit is going to end us up in the poor house. 😂 Sometimes I don’t even go down that aisle at the thrift store because nothing tempts me like a handy basket!

Oh my word! I thought I was the only one who noticed my children using so much dish soap!!! 😂😂 glad it isn’t just our household
People just don't understand thrifting and waiting. I think that has made me appreciate things even more than I would by waiting. ❤
I agree 100%! Thrift finds are savored here too!
Also waiting sometimes makes me realize that i just don't need that something. Waiting definitely is best. ❤
