Back then in the '90's it was uncommon to find a bar of soap for handwashing in the public bathrooms (southern China...I was there), even those in better hotels and restaurants. This series is true to the minor details. In episode 2 the grandmother went back to the doctor office to stand on line for extra medicine. Modern medicine at low cost is such a privilege, so she returns to get more just by standing in queue. There is little else she can do in her life except to watch TV in the dark (led lighting not a thing yet) and use her privileges. Her generation in China or Hong Kong had no modern medicine, not even aspirin, and relied on slow acting and less effective herbal remedies that are at times inconsistent in its power to relieve.
