You don't HAVE to, but the copper is going to naturally oxidize over time as its exposed to the air. Oftentimes it just looks dirty. By oxidizing it myself, I can also polish it so it still has shine and highlights and stuff.
I get pretty much all my tools from Amazon. I buy wire from both Amazon and Riogrande.com. All of this can also be bought at big box stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael's.

seed beads would be great for this they a real tiny to fit perfect about 1mm in diameter.
