Never learned to knit? Never fear! Readily available automatic spool knitters make quick work of creating soft knit bracelets. When made from wool yarn, these bangles can be machine washed in hot water to mat the natural fibers for a felted look. From our DIY producer Robert Mahar, this easy to make accessory can be created in any color with a coordinating wood bead to disguise the tied seam.
Find more of Robert's work at / www .
    Materials:
Automatic spool knitter (typically comes with tapestry needle and weighted clip)
    Wool yarn
    Wood beads
[Helpful note: We used the Embellish-Knit! Automatic spool knitter www.joann.com/e... and Patons Classic Wool Yarn - 100% Wool.]
    Instructions:
    1) Thread lighter weight wool yarn into automatic spool knitter following manufacturer's instructions. Slowly turn crank to create 8-10" of knitted cord.
    2) Thread yarn tail into tapestry needle and through the four open loops at end of cord and cinch closed. Then thread yarn through a wood bead, tie yarn tails from either end of cord to create a loop/bracelet. Cut excess.
    3) Zip bracelet into wash bag, send through washing machine on a hot water cycle. Removed washed/felted bracelet from wash bag and allow to air dry.

I think the music goes very well with this video. Cool project!

What a fun idea! It also gave me the idea of using a wooden bead, and doing some (careful) pyrography on it after it went through the wash. I would not have thought of making such classy bracelets if I had seen this; I would have mistaken it for a child's toy. Now I want one! Thanks for the lovely video, and never mind all the cranky pants who feel they simply must have their say, otherwise people who take the time to make lovely helpful videos would simply be too happy.

For those curious- yes, you can make the cord yourself using knitting needles. Look up "how to knit I-Cord." It's quite easy, though you'd need to buy double pointed needles.

I used to do this with 4 nails in a large empty thread spool as a child. Never made anything with the finished yarn, tho. This is cute.

Called Embellish Knit. The purple clothespin is a weight that pulls the yarn while you work. Or you could knit an I-cord with double pointed needles. Great job!

Instead of holding the embellishknit machine in my hand, I drilled a hole in my craft table and attached the machine with velcro to the table. I crank away and the knitted tube falls through the hole. No strain on my hands.

So, basically, knit yourself an i-cord, tie ends together, throw in washer. Got it. I've never bothered felting anything before, so I'm kind of wondering why the bracelets looks different than other items (like slippers, purses, decorative flowers, coasters, what have you) I've seen felted. Do i-cords just end up looking different than something more flat? Also, yes, cheating! Come on people, go to your local yarn shops, pick up some needles, and learn the art! :)

nifty little tool. but one thing our nuclearized environment doesn't need is another plastic element added to it. may I suggest that you make a modest investment and make them out of hemp, steel or even silver. The latter two I could help you with. good day.
