What I really love about Aokana is how they show that a good, exciting match is more important than winning or losing (literally every match including Misaki is a blast)
Not much in the anime, but he's the actual main character of the visual novel (which the anime is based on). I guess the anime covers Asuka's route with some parts from the other characters perspective (eg Misaki when she got afraid of failing)

Does the male guy Hinata race at all
He does race but only in flash backs and that’s barely. He also races for about 5 seconds later in the show.
