Awesome! That wooden shell is something I've wanted to see on a Game Boy Color for a while. If you have a 3d printer, you could try printing buttons and cartridges out of wood PLA (which can usually be post processed with wood stain)
These look so good! I’ve ordered several joycon shells from extremerate and the quality is amazing. I can’t wait to try my first GBC project using these :)
eXtremeRate has created a good reputation for themselves by putting out the best aftermarket JoyCon shells by a huge margin. It's not surprising at all that these GBC shells from them are also nothing short of fantastic. Also I hate myself for unironically falling in love with that glossy gold shell.
esotericsean I just got 2. The wood grain and the Japanese wave one. I’m hoping they come soon. I had to wait because the wood one was out of stock. Pretty excited. They look like pretty good quality!
Oh I absolutely love the wood grain! It’s the first wood effect that actual manages to pull it off well (IMO). I also have my phone and wallet in the matching wood grain look ✊
I really like these colors, they would go great with jellybellycustoms candy buttons or their gold and silver buttons. If extremerate are using their own injection molds, I'm hoping they make some NGPC shells too since no one has ever made shells for them. If you anyone from extremerate is reading this, NGPC collectors would love new shells, they would sell out fast if you made them!
Oki_Dingo Heh, the IPS is really nice and I have a few. But I don’t mind the smaller size of the TFT. They’re also half the price of IPS, lol. I wish I had a legit copy of Shantae though, mine are bootleg for flashing my own ROMs onto.
Hey Sean! I know I’m late to this video, but I absolutely love it. I wanted to ask where did you get the backlight kits from? Also, how did you center them so perfectly. I’ve been wanting to mod my game boys and the fact that I didn’t see you cut any plastic has me highly interested! Thank you for your content!
Thank you for answering! I found both the screen kit on Ali and the spacer 3D print file online by Makho. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer me and hopefully I’ll have a backlit GBC just as nice as these soon!
@@esotericsean that's great to know thanks for you message. I will be using them then, especially for that wood style shell. Look forward to seeing the game you are working on.
cicada The TFT is the same one used in BennVenn’s Freckle Shack. I think the IPS is better but the TFT is still really nice. It’s smaller than OEM or IPS though.
@@esotericsean Ty ♥ - Do you still sell modified shells? Or accept orders? Nothing can beat the pixel-look of an AGS, IPS panels is too artificial too far from original look
Hey man is regulated 3.3v ok for gbc? The 3.7v batt with tp4056 blew my fuses so I tried adding a diode in front and it works but it jumps alot... I then ordered some 3v buck regulators from china but they are coming in 2 months, then Amazon has these 3.3v regulators and I was wondering if u had tried em? Don't want my fuses blowing and also don't wanna use AA rechargeables like the "ultimate" retrofuture crap build
I haven't tried them specifically, but 3.3 should work. Were your fuses old? The issue could be something else. Old fuses + old caps + slightly higher voltage than expected could have put enough strain on it to pop the fuses. I haven't had any issues with TP4056s blowing fuses, but I do have a diode in my BoxyPixel GBA build.
Some RUclips Boi The standard IPS kit right now does require shell modification. These aren’t pre-cut. But if you have some flush trim cutters, it’s very easy to trim the shell. The TFT kits I used don’t require any shell modification.
Moisés Montoya I 3D printed them. The files can be found on Thingiverse. Not sure if anyone sells them, but maybe ask around on a 3D printer subreddit or Discord channel.
You can get them on AliExpress if you want to wait a few months. Or RetroModding: www.retromodding.com/collections/game-boy-color/products/game-boy-color-backlight
@@esotericsean I noticed when you said they came with the custom screen lens, and yeah, since no soldering is required are fine, but still prefer the another option, sick shell btw, but no shipping to Spain, I would love the red one.
I got the chameleon blue/purple one and the great wave one. Both of them look amazing but I prefer the blue one because the paint feels a lot more durable. The great wave has a soft touch matte finish which feels nice in the hand but gets scuffed very easily. You can see some of my collection here instagram.com/spaceinvader93/
TheAce93 Nice! I imagine the great wave is similar to the matte finish red shell then. Pretty sure the blue/purple one is 2K epoxy paint so that’s why it’s so durable.
This is the one I’m using: www.retromodding.com/collections/game-boy-color/products/game-boy-color-backlight You can also get them on AliExpress but expect to wait a few months for it to arrive.
Superkid109 Nope, the original version did but this is v3 which doesn’t have any frame drops and it draws a lot less power. Still more than FreckleShack, but a lot better. They’re about $30 vs the IPS at $50. The IPS is higher quality and full-size, but I don’t mind the smaller size myself. And these TFT kits require no shell modification, whereas the IPS does.
@@esotericsean Cheers ! I have the freckleshack for my main GBC but I just bought the Red shell you featured and was thinking of picking up something a little cheaper for that one!
⚠️HELP!! i have a gba japanese pokemon ((ruby?)) cart.can someone tell me if it’s worth anything to anyone or where i can at least find more info on it?
Still catching up on orders from back when I took them on (it was more than I could handle). My plan is to switch to content creation and game development full time instead of modding/selling, but I might be able to take on a few things here and there. Send me an email: sean@seanduran.com

Joshua K That’s a good idea! I’m still working on my 3D model of a GBC shell. Almost finished and will make a video on 3D printing it soon :)
Throw some red buttons on the wooden GBC and get a screen with some banana layout and you have yourself a DK GBC
D. Vargasm love that idea!
Red one with gold buttons and a blue screen is a Mario themed gbc
The gold one is just a gold themed one
The blue one could be combined with a lighter blue for the screen and a darker blue for the buttons and now it's a Megaman themed gbc
Those look beautiful
These look so good! I’ve ordered several joycon shells from extremerate and the quality is amazing. I can’t wait to try my first GBC project using these :)
I was really liking the red one.
And the golden shell reminded of the real metal shells.
Marcos Macoeove I think the gold shell might actually be electroplated!
Nice. These are clean. Very nice work as usual.
I think the shells look amazing!

Yeah, I wasn't actually sure if I was going to like it. But I really do. Wood grain is still my favorite. :)
Heck yeah, Been looking forward to this!
they all look awesome I have purple one you can change screen lens and you can upgrade colour its really so much fun.
I've done two of the wood ones with ips v2 in for customers. Perfect to trim and cracking pieces of kit
Those look fantastic! I should be getting mine in the mail soon as well. It's like a Game Boy assembly line! Cheers buddy!
What colors did you get? :)

maybe try to make wooden buttons for the wooden case? would definitely kill some time during quarintine :D
The red reminds me of a car. They all look amazing! Red and the touch purple was the best!
The red one is amazing I put my backlit one in today and my blue one last week bought it from the site from the description
That looked so easy you putting it together ❤

That wooden one with brass buttons... that'd make me drool...
I love watching your videos. I’ve been meaning to fix my wife’s game boy for a long time.
Appreciate it! What kind of Game Boy does she have? :)
A white screen and white buttons on the wood one would look legit
i'm getting a golden shell, gotta assert my dominance in my gameboy group
These are gorgeous!
nice video, thank you.
1:11 That gameboy shell looks so good I can eat it like chocolate bar.
The matte red is gorgeous
Hope it gets back in stock soon...
These tiny ass screens are a No-Go in my opinion. Especially since full-size IPS screens are available.

Bodhi I used some of jellybelly’s buttons on the gold shell actually! His silver ones.
Awesome shells Sean! That gold and the iridescent one are super dope! What is your everyday gaming GBC?
I love those shells, but has anyone had the paint rub off or chip when you insert/remove a cart?
These are fking beautiful
I gotta have that woodgrain one...

where do you get those backlit screens and lens in bulk like dat?
AliExpress
that sticker for cars your talking about are called vinyl wraps.
Burntpoptarts ah thanks! Couldn’t think of the name at the time haha
Red one looks sick, matches my 3ds lol
Its a shame they don't come with a screen cover. I guess a gorilla screen cover is the best way to go! :)
