  • Saint Joaquina Vedruna de Mas: Founder of the Carmelite Sisters of Charity
Saint Joaquina Vedruna de Mas (1783-1854) was a Spanish noblewoman and devoted servant of God, whose life of faith and charity left an enduring legacy. Born in Barcelona on April 16, 1783, to noble parents, she displayed a deep devotion to God from a young age. Despite her early desire to become a Carmelite nun, her parents arranged her marriage to Teodoro de Mas, with whom she had nine children. Both husband and wife were members of the Third Order of Saint Francis, sharing a commitment to faith and service.
Joaquina’s life took a dramatic turn during Napoleon's invasion of Spain. Forced to flee with her children while her husband fought and later died in 1816, she embraced her calling to serve Christ as a widow. Moving to Vic, she began charitable works for the sick and marginalized. Encouraged by her spiritual director, she founded the Carmelite Sisters of Charity on February 26, 1826, alongside eight other women. The congregation was dedicated to education and healthcare, addressing the urgent needs of society.
Her dedication faced significant challenges, including fleeing to France during the First Carlist War. Despite opposition, her congregation expanded, spreading throughout Spain and Hispanic America. Joaquina’s humility and service were marked by miraculous intercessions, attributed to her after her death. Two confirmed miracles-both healings-led to her beatification by Pope Pius XII in 1940 and her canonization by Pope John XXIII on April 12, 1959.
Joaquina passed away during a cholera epidemic in 1854, her body later discovered to be incorrupt, a sign of her sanctity. Today, her congregation operates globally, continuing her mission of faith and compassion. Saint Joaquina remains a powerful symbol of resilience, charity, and devotion to God.
