1. Yes, the name originally comes from my hometown Hamburg in Germany. ;) 2. No, we don't have 'Hamburg Steaks', but a dish called 'Hamburger Rundstück Warm' (Hamburg's hot round piece) which is made of a slice of Schweinebraten (roast pork) in a Brötchen (crispy round bread roll) with sauce, fried onions and gherkins slices. In the 19th century German immigrants brought this to America where it later transformed to the Hamburger you all know today. First the roast pork changed to a grilled beef patty, the crispy bread roll to a soft bun and the sauce to mustard and ketchup, and later also the name has been shortened to 'Hamburger' ;)

Americans didn't slap two buns a cheese and condiments to it.Actually, hamburgers were sold in docks in America. When they were cooked, they were very hot,so German merchants actually placed two slices of bread between the beef, and sold them to people. After that, they started making them more frequently, and eventually add condiment and much more, making the hamburger we know today.
