Why is it that every time a hunter is selective and waits for a big bull/big buck, they're berated by some as a "trophy hunter" with the assumption that the meat isn't important?! That's just dumb. If you're putting in the time out hunting for an animal whose meat will be consumed, there's nothing wrong with wanting to (or waiting to) take a big bull or buck. If you can score a freezer full of meat AND enjoy a beautiful wall-hanger, that's a great outcome. I've hunted for 40+ years and have known hundreds of hunters, not one of whom has ever taken home their trophy antlers but ignored the meat.
The music on your videos is fantastic. The music sounds like something from your grandfather's videos. I just love it. I also like your demeanor when you take an animal. That music was originally composed in the 1960s for Gordon Eastman's original outdoor films. It's definitely a throwback to a different time. Ike Eastman is Gordon's grandson. Thanks for your comment.
Thats an excellent bull! I really love the background music you had. So majestic yet so peaceful! Get tired of the truck, tractor, chewing tobacco country music.
Wow I recognize the mountains in the background. There are a lot of elk in this country. It wasn't that way when I was a kid. We can thank the private ranches for these elk herds because there is not that much public land here.
My stars! I thoroughly enjoyed this. I sure appreciate the attitude & ethics. The sincere, pleasant and respectful atmosphere and presentation is very refreshing. The majestic and beautiful background music is a true blessing. It is much better than the grinding, tense stuff so many use. Great hunt. I am preparing for our first elk hunt ever this fall. Does it bother anyone else that rifle elk season isn’t open in Colorado yet?!?! I guess there was an early season rifle elk season but would love to see a picture of the tag used to take this bull!!!
It is on the Hill Ranch where the tag is good (probably a landowner permit). Most of the tags are expensive $$,$$$ and run from September 1st - December 31st and can use any weapon. These are the tags most hunters can not afford.
@@marthabaker9387 I explained this to someone else by saying they either paid an average blue collar tradesmen yearly wage to hunt this ranch and probably still had to use their family name to get permission. Glad you put more details and information in your comment wish others could read it 👍
Whats the definition or fair chase? No high fences but 20 thousand acres of private land? Not a hater but just wondering? I watch the videos for the beautiful giant bulls but this would never happen even in a once in 20 year draw tag here in Oregon. You couldnt kill a spike around here with these hunting tactics
Southern Colorado where I call home. I have seen the elk herds grow since I was a youngster. I now pretty much hunt in the pinion country due to my age. I still hunt up high but I don't see as many elk there. There is a large local ranch that has a herd of somewhere around 4 to 5 hundred head of elk and do not allow hunting. I am happy for this because it has become the seed herd for that particular area. In the area I hunt you do not need to go miles into the back country to find elk. Almost everywhere I hunt I can hear human activity so the elk can also. A source of water is very important because the elk locally tend to travel over more or less circular routes. Never really staying in one place to long but at some point always returning there. Hunting property can be a problem. In the 52 years I have been big game hunting I have never harvested an animal on public land and I have been pretty successful. Something I can say is stay away from mule deer that live in the sage brush country. They are not fit to eat.

Pretty easy hunting down there on the Hill Ranch. More elk than you can shake a stick at. With roads and gas wells all over the hills . It's not even hunting really.
I don't understand hunting. I own a couple of rifles and shoot paper. I'm a Vietnam Vet and shot a snake. I fish and eat them. That thing was too beautiful. If I had the gear and time to practice I guess I could make the shot. I'm not against hunters and would hunt dear in the east where they are a nuisance, but that elk was gorgeous. I appreciate any feedback from hunters.
Absolutely it was on the Hill Ranch. If you have traveled or hunted in Trinidad / Raton Pass area you will recognize it immediately because of the burned out areas. It is a paid hunt that none of us can afford. We hunt public land where you rarely find bulls that are of that caliber. Hunting paid areas where there are no other hunters, the elk respond to bugles and cow calls.
