Went to see Rick tonight in Cambridge and was amazed at how he could incorporate Christmas Carols into other works. He is indeed a master of his art and long may it continue.
This is truly a wonderful work of love and it brought tears of joy as it will to anyone who loves great music! All songs are worshipful and tenderly respectful. I love it. With sincere thankfulness to Rick and his arrangements, these songs have been given a whole new life! :-)
We enter his matrix of cathedrals of sound based on these songs we think we know through vestibules of pure invention and then he gives us the songs to hear with new ears as they are reinvented as well. Thrilling!
As a keyboardist, Wakeman is someone I can learn from, not like the hundreds of other prog rock keyboardists. You can hear it on the way his synth lead sings out on the first song. It's as if a soloist from a great orchestra playing classical music was playing -- just reaching the fullness of music, not a genre that's not too far removed from a bar band. (See my Xian Psych playlist if you're reading this, called Private Label Christian Xian Psychedelia and Folk).
